Our Mission Statement
Helping you achieve financial success is our first priority.
The Double Pendulum Wealth Management group
The Double Pendulum Wealth Management Group at Morgan Stanley is a 6-person team providing comprehensive financial services to clients with complex or unique financial challenges. Their clients include high-net-worth individuals, small family offices, government entities, charitable entities, and ERISA-covered defined benefit plans and defined contribution plans operating with a trustee directed or trustee assisted model. The group primarily works on a fee basis, intentionally maintains a limited number or clients – about 40 clients per professional staff member – and can act with discretion over investment decisions. Clients do not work with a “lead” financial advisor as is common industry practice; instead the professional staff member on the team who is best qualified to address a particular problem or issue will do so. Every client will work with every team member over time.
So why The Double Pendulum? The double pendulum is a simple machine, a system of two joined hanging pendulums. We can understand it; we can engineer it; we can know everything knowable about it. But despite that knowledge, we still can’t predict its path. It simply can’t be done. We thought the metaphor was relevant both to financial markets and the surprises life throws at us all. We study and read and learn so we can know everything knowable that might help you. We listen to you so when challenges arise, we already understand your needs, your hopes, your worries and your fears. We guide you forward by integrating what we know about investing with what we know about you; but we do it all in the shadow of uncertainty. The double pendulum is our reminder that we must temper the confidence that comes with expertise with the wisdom that comes with experience. We must never fail to account for the wildness that lies in wait.
In closing, we'd like to remind you that Morgan Stanley has meaningful intelligence about every major asset class and a presence in every major market, as well as investment research from some of the world’s most respected analysts. Together, we will formulate a tailored strategy to help you achieve your most important goals and deliver a vast array of resources to you in the way that is most appropriate for how you invest, as well as for what you want to achieve both now and in the future.

April 2025 Market Update
Let’s start by directly addressing the market’s reaction to the April 2nd “Liberation Day” tariff announcement. As you are likely already aware, the US stock markets fell in excess of 10 percent across a two-day span Thursday and Friday April 3rd and 4th in response to the tariff announcement – among the largest two-day declines in market history.

February 2025 Market Update
January produced excellent returns in both stock and bond markets – though the relative winners and losers switched as we predicted in our year-ahead note in early January . For the month, the Dow Jones, S&P 500, and Nasdaq rose 4.8 percent, 2.8 percent, and 1.7 percent respectively. Value outperformed growth for the month with the Russell 1000 Value gaining 4.6 percent and the Russell 1000 Growth gaining 2.0 percent. Mid cap stocks and small caps also performed well, with the Russell Mid-cap gaining 4.3 percent and the Russell 2000 (small caps) increasing 2.6 percent. International stocks also had a good month with the MSCI All-Cap world ex-us rising 5.0 percent, the MSCI EAFE gaining 5.3 percent, and the MSCI Emerging Markets gaining 1.8 percent. Bonds rallied modestly as well – the Bloomberg US Aggregate index increased by 0.5 percent .

January 2025 Market Update
December was a tough month for both stocks and bonds: the S&P 500 declined 2.4 percent and the Barclays Aggregate Bond Index declined 1.6 percent. When the Federal Reserve indicated there would be fewer rate cuts in 2025 than the market expected, just about everything fell. The sell off extended to all capitalizations and also to international stocks; the hardest hit segments were small and mid-cap stocks (they use the most short-term financing), which declined 8.3 percent and 7 percent respectively. The MSCI World ex-US lost 2.7 percent and the MSCI Emerging Markets was the best-performing equity segment, declining only 0.1 percent.
Learn MoreDecember 2024 Market Update
November provided excellent returns for US stocks but many headwinds for international stocks. The S&P 500, Dow Jones Industrial Average, and Nasdaq rose 5.9 percent, 7.7 percent and 6.3 percent respectively. As a rule, smaller outperformed larger and domestic outperformed international – in our opinion, this pattern was predictable considering the Republican Federal election sweep on November 3rd. The Russell Mid-Cap gained 8.2 percent for the month, and the Russell 2000 (small caps) gained 9.4 percent. Conversely international markets declined on the back of a stronger post-election dollar and the threat of tariffs. The MSCI EAFE declined 0.5 percent and the MSCI Emerging Markets declined 3.3 percent.

This month, we are going to start our missive with our reaction to the election and the subsequent market rally on Wednesday the 6th. We will review October performance at the end of our note; but October’s election uncertainty declines have been fully reversed with stock markets making new post-election highs.
Learn MoreOctober 2024 Market Update
September turned out to be a positive month for both stocks and bonds as the markets digested a larger than expected 50 basis point cut from the Federal Reserve and economic data that supported the soft-landing narrative. For the month, all the major stock and bond indices we track for you in these updates increased with the biggest winner being the emerging markets.
Learn MoreSeptember 2024 Market Update
August was a good month for both stocks and bonds. The S&P 500, Dow, and Nasdaq all gained, 2.4 percent, 2.0 percent, and 0.7 percent respectively. The Russell Midcap increased 2.0 percent, while the Russell 2000 (small caps) declined 1.5 percent. International markets rallied as well. The MSCI World ex-US was up 3.4 percent, the EAFE index gained 3.3 percent, and the MSCI Emerging Markets index increased by 1.6 percent. Bonds also rallied during the month as the Fed statements from the Jackson Hole meeting erased any doubt about forthcoming rate cuts when Chairman Powel said, “the time has come for policy to adjust. The direction of travel is clear, and the timing and pace of rate cuts will depend on incoming data, the evolving outlook and the balance of risks.” The Bloomberg Aggregate US Bond Index gained 1.4 percent for the month.
Learn MoreAugust 2024 Market Update
July produced the most sanguine and welcome markets of the year – with just about everything that wasn’t the Magnificent 7 rallying -- prompted by the well-suspected but now Powel-confirmed fall Federal reserve rates cuts. As Lisa Shallett, our Chief Investment Strategist, wrote in this month’s On the Markets, “after one of the longest Federal Reserve policy pauses in history, markets spent the bulk of July discounting a September start to rate cuts with near-100% certainty. Catalyzed by a convincing slowdown in June inflation, including improvement in “sticky” components, the upshot was plunging US Treasury yields, with the bellwether two-year rate down 46 basis points, accompanied by a rotation in equity leadership emblematic of the traditional policy-easing playbook.” For the month, the Dow Jones increased 4.5 percent, the Russell Mid-cap gained 4.7 percent, and the Russell 2000 (small caps) gained 10.2 percent. The Nasdaq was the only major index to decline, by 0.7 percent, as international stocks also rallied by about 3 percent, depending on the particular index. Bonds also had a good month as rates began to fall in anticipation of Fed cuts – the Aggregate Bond index gained 2.3 percent.
Learn MoreJuly 2024 Market Update
Stock market returns in June were mixed – the S&P 500 rose 3.6 percent and the Dow increased by 1.2 percent. Midcap and Small cap stocks both fell about a percent, as measured by the Russell Midcap and Russell 2000 indices. The MSCI World ex-Us also fell 1.6 percent for the month, though the MSCI Emerging Markets index rose 5 percent. The US Aggregate bond index gained 0.9 percent in June.
Learn MoreJune 2024 Market Update
May proved to be a good month for stock markets; fixed income markets also produced positive returns. The S&P 500 rose about 5 percent last month; the rally extended down the capitalization spectrum with the Russell 2000 (small caps) and Russell Mid Cap indices up 5.0 percent and 2.9 percent respectively. International stocks rallied about 3.9 percent as measured by the MSCI all cap world ex-US index. Bonds rose as rates retreated after the April scare. The Bloomberg US aggregate gained 1.7 percent for the month. All in all, May was a welcome reprieve from April’s declines.
Learn MoreMay 2024 Market Update
As we anticipated in our April Market Update, last month proved to be challenging for equity and fixed income markets alike. The S&P 500 fell 4.1 percent and the Bloomberg Aggregate Bond index declined 2.3 percent – the damage to bond markets happened earlier in the month and was followed by a selloff in equities that continued right through to April 30th. The equity declines were broad and extended to midcap, small cap, and international stocks, as well as every sector of the S&P 500 save utilities.
Learn MoreApril 2024 Market Update
March was another good month for equity markets. The S&P 500 rose 3.2 percent for the month with Mid Caps and Small Caps performing even better. The Russell Midcap gained 4.3 percent and the Russell 2000 gained 3.6 percent. International markets also trended higher with the MSCI world ex-US gaining 3.4 percent and MSCI Emerging Markets gaining 2.2 percent. Fixed income was also positive for the month, with the US Aggregate Bond Index gaining 0.9 percent.
Learn MoreMarch 2024 Market Update
February was a good month for stocks and produced a broader set of gainers – while a couple of the magnificent 7 stocks led mega caps higher, a few others waivered and the Russell Mid-Cap and Russell 2000 actually outperformed the Russell 1000 for the month. Value stocks continued to underperform growth.
Learn MoreFebruary 2024 Market Update
In January, the MSCI World climbed 0.6 percent and the Bloomberg Aggregate bond index declined 0.3 percent. US stocks fared slightly better than international stocks with the S&P, Dow Jones Industrial, and Nasdaq climbing 1.7 percent, 1.3 percent, and 1.0 percent respectively.
Learn MoreJanuary 2024 Market Update
As it turned out, 2023 was a year of recovery in both stocks and bonds, though that seemed anything but a forgone conclusion back in October. Both equities and fixed income rallied in November and December as the Federal Reserve signaled its intent to not only halt the rate increases, but to cut rates in 2024. 2Investors should consider many factors before deciding which 529 plan is appropriate. Some of these factors include: the Plan’s investment options and the historical investment performance of these options, the Plan’s flexibility and features, the reputation and expertise of the Plan’s investment manager, Plan contribution limits and the federal and state tax benefits associated with an investment in the Plan. Some states, for example, offer favorable tax treatment and other benefits to their residents only if they invest in the state’s own Qualified Tuition Program. Investors should determine their home state’s tax treatment of 529 plans when considering whether to choose an in-state or out-of-state plan. Investors should consult with their tax or legal advisor before investing in any 529 Plan or contact their state tax division for more information. 7The returns on a portfolio consisting primarily of Environmental, Social and Governance (“ESG”) aware investments may be lower or higher than a portfolio that is more diversified or where decisions are based solely on investment considerations. Because ESG criteria exclude some investments, investors may not be able to take advantage of the same opportunities or market trends as investors that do not use such criteria. Diversification does not guarantee a profit or protect against loss in a declining financial market.
