The Bearing Group Advantage

Our strength lies in our ability to understand and respond to your specific financial needs as they evolve over time. It is only through doing this well that we are able to effectively manage risk and optimize performance, as we help you achieve your personal definition of financial success.

At The Bearing Group, we are committed to the following core values that set us apart from other advisory teams:

Long-Term Relationships
We are dedicated to building deep client relationships. We do this by working with a select group of individuals, families and business leaders, who value our depth of knowledge and experience in providing comprehensive solutions that go well beyond investments. The bond we form with each client is fundamental to our mission, and it is our hope that it spans generations.

Knowledge and Experience
With more than 120 years of combined experience, our leadership team includes a Certified Financial PlannerTM, a Chartered Financial Analyst®, a Certified Investment Management Analyst® and a Chartered Retirement Planning Specialist®. This concentration of education and skills is rare in one group of Financial Advisors. We use our extensive technical and analytical skills to research, evaluate and recommend appropriate strategies to address your particular needs and goals.

A Team Approach
We are a seasoned and stable team – together for more than 25 years at the same firm. Our priority is to help you prepare for all of life’s milestones and to be your first call for any financial matter. We work in relationship with your accountant, attorney and other professionals to build a comprehensive and cohesive plan that encompasses all aspects of your life.

Personalized Service
We recognize every client is different. Some require in-depth explanations of investment concepts, while others understand those concepts thoroughly and prefer advisors with whom they can formulate strategies. We are committed to helping you achieve your goals in a manner that aligns with your expectations of a concierge, first-class experience.

Our Process, Your Journey

The hallmark of our wealth management approach is a commitment to building customized solutions from the ground up. We then fine-tune them over time to help achieve your specific goals, while responding more effectively to today’s economic and fiscal challenges.
Our process takes a 360 degree view of your wealth. This leads to solutions that are not only designed to reach specific financial targets, but are reflective of who you are and how you ultimately want to share your wealth.

Step 1: Understanding You
We begin with an in-depth conversation to understand your goals and the goals of your family, the concerns you have and what you ultimately would like to achieve.

Step 2: Analyzing Your Needs
Next, we’ll collect key information about your current finances. We’ll then review your current and future financial situation, identify the likelihood of reaching your goals and address any potential shortfalls or the impact of unexpected life events.

Step 3: Tailoring Your Solution
In this step, we’ll present a customized wealth management plan with specific strategies designed to achieve your particular goals. Upon your approval, we’ll set into motion a course of action that strives to align your values and vision with your personal definition of financial success. We’ll also discuss important investment concepts and provide details on our investment philosophy.

Step 4: Implementing Your Plan
Once we activate your plan, we’ll set up a number of implementation meetings to ensure your account is set up properly and you have convenient access to your account information. We’ll also interact with your accountant and estate attorney to ensure a coordinated effort.

Step 5: Continuous Monitoring
We’ll monitor your progress and review the performance through ongoing calls and meetings. We may recommend adjustments over time due to changing market conditions or changes in your circumstances to help keep you on track towards achieving your goals.

Whether you seek retirement plan services for your organization or a financial wellness program for your employees, we offer comprehensive solutions that can be tailored to your specific needs and goals.

About Michael D Ciesemier

Mike is a Senior Vice President for Morgan Stanley. As a Chartered Retirement Planning Specialist (CRPS®), Mike is designated as a Corporate Retirement Director for the firm. Mike is responsible for plan design, fiduciary guidance, and ongoing plan monitoring for our retirement plan clients.
As the youngest of five boys, I often found myself at the bottom of the scrum pile and last in line to get food. This taught me to be resilient and patient as I eventually emerged from underneath the bottom of the heap. My parents grew up with modest means and shared a strong desire to have a large family. After serving in World War II, my dad would be found working two or three jobs to provide for his burgeoning family. An engineer by background, he taught me to question how things were made, mainly so I’d know how to fix something once it broke. My mom’s passion for reading books with us taught me to do the same with my kids and her constant mending of the hand-me-down clothes taught me to cherish whatever we had. Together, they taught me so much about setting goals, working hard and, despite obstacles, to achieve my goals. They also taught me that education, throughout life, is the nourishment that I need to fuel my inquisitive mind.
Wealth Management, when done right, requires many skills, experiences and discipline. I reflect on my younger self and recognize that what I am doing today – helping my clients with the “reality” of their lives – is in many ways what I have always been doing, understanding how and why things work the way they do and creating solutions to whatever problems I encounter.
I am joined in my vision and passion for serving clients by my team which we formed in 1992. We spend our days designing and monitoring wealth management strategies that enable clients to navigate both risks and opportunities with confidence. As a steward of the wealth entrusted to our care, we carefully manage wealth for successful families, business owners and corporate executives, and integrate our advice with our clients’ CPA and attorney to make financial stewardship more coordinated and effective.

I entered this field in 1992 after spending 10 years in public accounting and corporate finance. Since then, I have steadily built knowledge and experience in the areas of retirement planning, wealth management, investment stewardship and corporate retirement plan management. For this expertise, I have been designated a Certified Investment Management Analyst® by the Investment & Wealth Institute. Additionally, Morgan Stanley has designated me as Corporate Retirement Director and an Alternative Investments Director.

My life outside work revolves around my wife, Ellery, our son and daughter, and our Wheaton home and community. I am former President of Kids Caring 4 Kids, a charity that our daughter founded at age 11 to inspire young people to care for others and to serve children affected by poverty in sub-Saharan Africa. I enjoy hobbies including running, cycling and triathlons. Ellery and I enjoy traveling, live music and great food!
goal, personally and professionally, remains much like my parents’ - to provide for family and serve others. At The Bearing Group, that is what we do.

About Matthew Filosa

Matt is a Senior Vice President for Morgan Stanley. As a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA®), Matt is responsible for strategic policy, portfolio optimization, and investment manager selection and monitoring for clients.
Since my early teens all I ever wanted to do was become a financial advisor. This singular professional focus allowed me to develop many important building blocks during my early education and career. Whether it was taking business classes in high school, finance and economic courses in college, pursing my MBA, achieving my Charter Financial Analysis (CFA) designation, or working in the business valuation group at Arthur Anderson, these experiences all helped me gain valuable expertise in investing and the markets. However, more importantly, it was my early years at my predecessor firm of Smith Barney that taught me true wealth management is more than numbers and textbooks. Wealth management is
- Watching a parent’s (or grandparent’s) child graduate from college
- Seeing a client’s business or career grow and prosper
- Admiring a son/daughter taking care of an elderly parent
- Observing a client, after years of hard work, move into a well-deserved retirement
You see, wealth management is about people and their lives, not about their money.

It is the depth of wealth management that drives me to serve my clients. I am so fortunate that my clients are not strangers. They are my family, friends or close business associates. I know their dreams, goals, fears and their families. It is for them that I do what I do.
I am joined in this passion with a team of true professionals. To a person this team is focused on the relationships we have with each of our clients. It is this shared vision that has sustained this team since its inception in 1992. I am so proud to be in the company of these individuals.
As far as my life outside of work, I have been married to my wonderful wife Mary Ellen since 1986. We have two beautiful children, Alec and Joe. We have lived in the Beverly neighbourhood (southwest side of Chicago) since we married. It is here that we try to give back to the community that has been so good to us. Some of these activities include our local school, our church and our local hospital foundation. In my free time I enjoy golf and spending time with family and friends in southwest Michigan.

About Elizabeth J Frattura

As a Certified Financial Planner™ (CFP®), Beth’s clients consider her their primary financial resource who helps them implement the best actions and strategies available – beyond investments – to prepare for retirement and reach other financial goals. Her attention to detail helps ensure that all facets of a client’s situation (taxes, estate plan, etc.) are considered when crafting an overall financial strategy that is designed to achieve as much of their goals as is realistic, with the least amount of risk possible. In many ways, what drives Beth is a utilitarian approach, which means solving for the most practical and efficient use of resources and strategies available. She also believes in empowering her clients through financial education so that they are fully engaged, vested, and more confident in the decisions they make now and in the future.

Beth grew up on a farm in Southern Illinois and credits this rural upbringing with many entrepreneurial and life skills such as honesty, perseverance, remote problem-solving, frugality, and a ‘the early bird catches the worm’ work ethic. Her parents purchased their farm ground in the 70’s and 80’s with loans in the mid-teens. They were adamant about instilling in her the value of a dollar and the concept of slowly building wealth. As a first-generation college graduate, she did not know anyone in the finance industry, but the everchanging
markets and global macroeconomic landscape always interested her. In 2007 she joined Morgan Stanley as a Financial Advisor.

As a leading female financial advisor, Beth has received numerous accolades throughout her career from several prominent industry organizations. Her most recent recognition awards include:

▪ ForbesMagazine Top Women Advisors Best-In-State, 2023 ▪ Washington University Olin Business School 2022 Emerging Leader
▪ ForbesMagazine Top Next-Gen Advisors Best-in-State, 2023 ▪ St Louis’ Top Wealth Advisor, 2011, St Louis Business Journal
▪ FIVESTAR Wealth Manager Award, Chicago Magazine, 2022
▪ Washington University Olin Business School 2022 Emerging Leader
▪ St Louis’ Top Wealth Advisor, 2011, St Louis Business Journal

A strong advocate for education, Beth serves on the Board of Directors for the SIUE Foundation and Endowment. She is also a member of the Chicago Estate Planning Council and Daughters of the American Revolution. After struggling with infertility for several years, in 2019, Beth founded a nonprofit, The Stork Foundation for Infertility, whose mission is to provide financial assistance to low resource individuals who require costly medical infertility treatments to conceive a child.

Beth holds a Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in Business Administration from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville (SIUE) and an Executive Master of Business Administration (M.B.A.) from Washington University. She resides in Illinois with her husband, Todd, and their three children, Mary, Ellis, & Clara. In addition to her philanthropic work and board service, Beth enjoys photography, reading biographies, and going to the theater.

About Jason Schultz

Jason works with our retirement plan clients to establish and maintain retirement plans that are designed to meet their unique business goals. Working with you, Jason helps you adhere to best practices in retirement plan design, investment management, employee success, and ongoing plan management for all your financial and retirement plan needs.
Where to begin? I believe that knowing someone is not just having facts about them, but in knowing their story (it’s the reason the exposition of a good movie takes so long!). So here is mine:
I was born in a family of six (four children), living in a 900 square foot house. My father worked the night shift as a mechanic and kept odd jobs on the side. My Mother, while she stayed at home with the kids, found ways to work as well around all of our schedules. We weren’t close to being rich, but knew we could make it if we kept our heads down and moving forward.
As a child, I was constantly taught core values that have stuck with me all these years later. Do good to others. Work hard. Always do your best. Don’t lie, cheat or steal. Always be respectful. It seems simple, but these are the concepts of my formative years.
I ended up doing well in school, graduating near the top of my high school class. I never missed a day of school from K-12. Ever. I played many sports and participated in many activities. Yet, when the clock ran out on high school, I didn’t know where to turn. I was accepted to many good colleges, and even received grants and scholarships. Unequipped with knowledge (my twin brother and I were the first to go to college in our family) or resources, I didn’t know where to turn.
So I decided to attend college locally and worked sometimes up to 3 jobs to pay for school. I still graduated early and Summa Cum Laude, but never had the experiences many of my peers had in going away to school.
This is where I realized that I wanted to help people. I saw that without the proper guidance and counsel, even smart, well-intentioned people can make decisions in the dark. As I sat and watched the havoc the technology crash of the early 2000’s (and the amount of good people who made absolutely terrible investment decisions), I became even more resolute in my decision to help guide people through their tough decisions.
It is my path and my own life journey that has made me uniquely equipped to do so. I have personally experienced what so many aspiring Americans experience on a daily basis as they too purse a better life for themselves and their families. Solving tough financial questions is a core part of my role with The Bearing Group, whether that is helping you with your debt or assisting corporate executives with complex estate planning strategies, my team is equipped to handle almost any financial concern you have.
Personally, my life revolves around my wife, Jessica, and my two sons. I believe that people – family and community – are the fabric of life. My goal as a financial advisor is to help you sew your own quilt – a quilt that you can not only use today, but also pass on for generations to come.
