About Us

Aistear (EYE-STEER) is the Celtic word for journey and a fitting name for our team of financial professionals. As guides on your personal financial journey, we can help you take a more direct route to your ultimate destination and perhaps give you more time to enjoy the scenery along the way.

Our team is comprised of professionals with years of experience and credentials that distinguish us from many of the other advisory choices available to you. James Carney and Bareq Peshtaz, two of our principals, are Morgan Stanley Family Wealth Advisors, a distinction awarded to only a relative handful of the firm’s 16,000 Financial Advisors. In addition, Bareq is a Certified Investment Management Analyst®, and James is a Certified Financial Planner. Todd Bonime and Doug Webb are Morgan Stanley Financial Planning Specialists who can help you address challenges that go far beyond your investment portfolio.

Our objective is to serve as your personal CFO and relieve you of the financial stresses and complexities that may take you away from your family, work or whatever else is really important to you. Our clients include successful business owners, corporate executives, professionals and other people of means who realize that in today’s complex financial environment, a team of experienced guides can prove invaluable in helping them complete their financial journey on time and as anticipated.

Clients

Most of our clients are business owners, corporate executives and professionals who are well established in their communities and careers. Despite their success, however, they may face the following challenges:

Corporate executives often come to us with portfolios that consist largely of their employer stock and stock options that are subject to a myriad of rules of which they may only be vaguely aware. We help them manage the risk of over consolidation and integrate their equity compensation and overall corporate benefits with the rest of their finances.

Business owners often share a number of characteristics in common, even if their businesses differ greatly from one another. Their personal wealth is linked to the fortunes of their companies and they face financial challenges that go well beyond their investment portfolios. We have helped these clients manage cash flow, access capital and uncover risks that might jeopardize the future value and continuity of their businesses. In addition, we often work with our clients’ attorneys and accountants to formulate and implement business succession plans through the successful sale of a company or the transfer of ownership to family members.

Professionals and, indeed, many of our other clients simply seek to retire with the confidence that they’ll be able to maintain a desired lifestyle for as long as they live. These individuals may also be concerned with planning their estates to provide for family members and/or charitable organizations without excessive tax liability or conflict among heirs.

Because we essentially serve as our clients’ personal CFO, we are often asked to assume responsibility for many of their day-to-day cash flow, tax planning, investment management, banking and insurance related decisions. We also collaborate with their estate planning attorneys to address their wealth transfer and philanthropic goals with customized, coordinated strategies.
  • Individuals and Families
We know that your financial obligations can extend well beyond stocks and bonds in a portfolio. You can depend on us to provide comprehensive wealth management services that encompass both sides of your balance sheet and every aspect of your financial life.

  • Business Owners
We understand that ownership of a business frequently represents years, if not decades, of hard work and entrepreneurial savvy. However, even the best business owners may often be unfamiliar with the complexities and meticulous preparation that must go into a successful sale. Put another way, owners are preparing for a deal of a lifetime, with possibly zero experience. Lean on us to provide the knowledge, experience, and resources necessary to help guide you through the complexities of a business exit or sale.
  • Philanthropic Goals
Do you have a passion that you'd like to transform into an actionable plan that benefits others? We, along with our partners across the firm, can help you:

    • Define your charitable interests and identify nonprofits that work in those areas
    • Select charitable vehicles that may address your needs
    • Implement plans to help ensure that your charitable dollars are well spent
    • Seek nonprofit board placements that complement your passion
    • Conduct research on specific charities and areas of charitable interest
    • Find ways to involve children and other family members in your giving

  • Serving as our clients’ personal CFO requires an intimate knowledge of who they are as people, as well as investors. Our planning process is robust and covers aspects of your financial life that many plans don’t.

Certainly, we examine your investments held at Morgan Stanley, but we also review assets held elsewhere – real estate, employer stock and stock options, closely held business or family limited partnership interests, for example. We work with your estate planning attorney to refine your plan and make certain it does what you want it to do, while reducing the possibility of excessive taxation and family conflict. If you’re like many of our clients, you have philanthropic objectives that should be reflected in not only your estate plan, but your budgeting, cash flow and investment strategies.

As CFO for not only you, but your entire family, we take a close look at dynamics and how you can best reach goals that may include providing your children or grandchildren with a solid start to financial security or perhaps simply teaching them about the basics of investing and the responsibilities that come with wealth. In the event of divorce, disability or the passing of a spouse, our clients’ often count on us to help relieve them of burdens they may not be prepared to assume on their own.

In short, the plan we create for you encompasses virtually every aspect of your financial life. We know you’re succeeding when we monitor your plan and determine whether you’re progressing as anticipated toward the goals you set for yourself. And we also know we’re succeeding when you not only reach those goals, but start asking us questions like:

Is that vacation condo I’m considering financially feasible?

Should I lease or buy a new car?

Can you talk to my children about credit and how to use it wisely?

After all, we think that a CFO should be available for consultation whenever a CEO has a financial question.

Meet THE AISTEAR GROUP

About Me

For many of our clients, Todd is the first person they meet when working with The Aistear Group. He heads our business development efforts, forging relationships with attorneys, accountants and other centers of influence who understand the value that an experienced team of financial professionals can offer their clients. In addition, Todd’s extensive capital markets background provides our trading-oriented clients with a source to whom they can turn for guidance on individual stocks and new issues.

Todd began his financial services career more than three decades ago. A native of Portland, Oregon, he had always been fascinated by the financial markets and after graduating from Pomona College in California, he moved to New York to pursue his dream. There, he served as the link between equity research analysts and Financial Advisors at a Morgan Stanley predecessor firm. Two years later, he moved back to the Northwest with the experience and contacts to begin his own career as a Financial Advisor. Todd has also been named to the firm's prestigious Master's Club, an elite group composed of the firm's top Financial Advisors. The appointment recognizes Todd's consistent creativity and excellence in providing a wide range of investment products and wealth management services to his clients.

Todd played varsity tennis in college and still competes with a number of USTA teams. Todd was a long-time member of Rotary 4 and a volunteer with The Boys and Girls Clubs of Seattle. He and his wife reside in Seattle’s Madison Park area.

About Me

Bareq co-founded The Aistear Group with the vision of serving as our clients’ personal CFO. His previous experience as a business owner and key executive convinced him that successful people often lack the time to focus on personal finances. What they needed, he reasoned, was the same caliber of financial advice and acumen that CFOs provide their CEOs on an ongoing basis.

Bareq joined Morgan Stanley in 2013, realizing the firm offers the extensive resources and collaborative spirit necessary to advise sophisticated clients. He soon earned the firm’s prestigious Family Wealth Advisor designation, a credential awarded to only a few hundred of Morgan Stanley’s 16,000 Financial Advisors. More important, it was a credential that affirmed his ability to provide successful families with the guidance to manage their assets, make more informed philanthropic decisions and transfer their wealth from one generation to the next without excessive taxation or family conflict.

Bareq manages a number of client relationships but focuses much of his attention on the team’s investment efforts. As a Certified Investment Management Analyst, CIMA® professional, he oversees the creation of our portfolio models. Our disciplined investment process is implemented through analysis and identification of both internal and third party investment management organizations with histories of outstanding performance and organizational excellence.

He is Chair of the Board of Trustees of Childhaven, is a Seattle’s Children’s Hospital Legacy Advisory and member of Seattle Rotary #4. In addition, he is a growing supporter of the Brain Injury Association of Washington.

Bareq is a graduate of University of Washington with a BS in Cell and Molecular Biology. He completed Yale School of Management’s distinguished Investment Management Theory & Practice program, earning the prestigious CIMA® certification. Bareq resides in Bellevue with his wife and three young children and their dog Baxter.

He joined Morgan Stanley in 2012 after tenures at such firms as KeyCorp and Bernstein Global Wealth Management.

A Morgan Stanley Family Wealth Advisor with the credentials to provide high net worth clients with the guidance they need to meet the challenges that invariably accompany wealth, Jim graduated from The University of Washington with a BA in Finance and Marketing. Later, he earned a Financial Planning Certificate from The University’s Foster School of Business and an MBA from Seattle University.  Outside the office, he is a self-professed serial volunteer who has served on a number of non-profit boards, including the YMCA and Northwest Family Business Advisors. About Me

A Morgan Stanley credentialed Financial Planning Specialist, Doug plays a key role in developing comprehensive plans for Aistear Group clients. Specifically, he meets with them to gather the input necessary to create what is essentially a roadmap with tangible recommendations for achieving specific personal goals. He then assists in presenting the plan so that the clients have a firm grasp on options available to them.

In addition, Doug confers often with the children of current clients to educate them on the basics of investing and other financial topics. In many cases, he has provided them with their first financial plan.

A graduate of Gonzaga University with a BA in Economics, Doug studied abroad at London Metropolitan University where he received his Master's in International Economics and Trade. Upon returning to the US, he began his career in financial services in Beverly Hills, California where he researched and traded equities and municipal bonds at M.L. Stern and Co.  Doug was then the trader at Tower Asset Management, also in Beverly Hills, before joining Morgan Stanley in 2013. Doug resides in Seattle's Belltown neighborhood and serves as a Next Generation Legacy Advisor to Seattle Children's Hospital.

About Me

Ann is the newest member of The Aistear Group, having joined Morgan Stanley in the summer of 2017. Her financial services career, however, spans more than two decades as a Registered Senior Client Associate with Merrill Lynch.

We sometimes refer to Ann as our “Chief Experience Officer” because she is charged with the responsibility of helping clients maximize their experience with Morgan Stanley. That means taking full advantage of all the benefits available to them as an Aistear Group client from online account access to private banking.

A graduate of Cornell University’s famed School of Hotel Administration, Ann spent several years in the hospitality industry as a sales manager and event planner before transitioning to financial services. Outside the office, she greatly enjoys learning how to sail and teaching sewing skills to children. She and her husband reside on Bainbridge Island with their Maine Coon Cat, Cassie.

About Me

The first person you talk to when calling The Aistear Group may very well be Suzie. As the team’s Client Service Associate, she performs a multitude of tasks from helping clients open new accounts to arranging for fund transfers, income distributions and online account access.

Suzie joined Morgan Stanley in 2015 after receiving her BA in Psychology and MA in Business Management from Seattle Pacific University. Her graduate study focused on Social and Sustainable Management and required her to study abroad in India and China.

Suzie’s can-do attitude and enthusiastic demeanor are reflective of her commitment to simplify our clients’ financial lives. She goes the extra mile outside the office as well, running marathons, playing violin, sign language interpreting and cake decorating.  She is especially proud of her tenure on the board of the College Success Foundation, an organization that inspires underserved, low-income students to finish high school, graduate college and succeed in life.
