How to Manage Your Newfound Fortune

Have you ever wondered why some lottery winners quickly go bankrupt or why many young adults spend their inheritance in a couple of years? Although becoming unexpectedly wealthy provides you with a unique opportunity to reshape your life in a positive way, it can give you a false sense of financial security that can lead to monetary troubles in the future.

I understand that unpredictably coming into a large sum of money is both an exciting and stressful experience for any individual. No matter the source, significant sudden wealth will offer you a chance, but not a guarantee, to enjoy a long fruitful life without financial burden.

During this time, having a professional to help you navigate your new found wealth is extremely important. Whether your goals involve determining an appropriate monthly spending limit, funding your child’s college tuition, or planning for retirement, our working together can provide the key to your success. I have access to first-class resources that are designed to tackle the hurdles you face as well as the specialized knowledge and experience to address those challenges now and in the future.

My priority is to understand and consult on the specific needs of you and your family in a collaborative, professional and educational manner—one that places your goals at the center of our relationship.
    Icon Image
Step 1: Don't go it alone
Assembling an experienced team of advisors – what I'd call your “dream team of professionals” – can provide critical guidance and support, helping you make informed decisions about your future with greater confidence and clarity. Consider building a team that includes your lawyer, your CPA, and wealth advisory professionals.
    Icon Image
    Step 2: Protect Your Identity
If your newly acquired wealth receives media attention, you should take immediate steps to protect yourself and your family from unwanted contacts and requests. Try considering some actions that aid in privacy protection such as changing phone numbers, email addresses, or social media accounts.
    Icon Image
Step 3: Clarify your value system and desired quality of life
I firmly believe in the adage, “invest your time before you invest your money.” Often, clients who receive a large lump sum want to immediately put that money to work through a variety of investments. Clearly a smart strategy for the long term, but before the first dollar is invested, we advise spending quality time identifying your core values and introspectively asking yourself important questions such as "what type of lifestyle do I want to enjoy?"
    Icon Image
    Step 4: Set Your Goals
When establishing goals, it is wise to break them down into both short and long term. Short term goals may revolve around paying off debts and day to day expenditures whereas long term goals can focus more on executing on your core values and aspirations.
    Icon Image
Step 5: Create a realistic spending plan
As you map out strategies to accomplish your goals, it’s also important to work with your advisors to create a realistic spending plan that you can follow. Making sure the plan is both sustainable and based around your goals will help you maintain the discipline to stick with it.
    Icon Image
Step 6: Commit to a comprehensive wealth management plan
Done properly, we believe family wealth management incorporates your family values, financial priorities and legacy concerns to reflect your family’s entire financial resources. It emphasizes four critical components; Financial Planning, Investment Management, Risk Management, and Legacy Planning.

10Investing in the market entails the risk of market volatility. The value of all types of investments may increase or decrease over varying time periods. The returns on a portfolio consisting primarily of sustainable or impact investments may be lower or higher than a portfolio that is more diversified or where decisions are based solely on investment considerations. Because sustainability and impact criteria exclude some investments, investors may not be able to take advantage of the same opportunities or market trends as investors that do not use such criteria. Diversification does not guarantee a profit or protect against loss in a declining financial market.
