The solutions we provide you are designed to help you get to where you want to go. Like a car’s navigational system, your financial planning map provides a reliable turn-by-turn route that aims to steer safely around unexpected roadblocks and provide you with the surest path to your destination.

Like most people, your destination is probably a long, comfortable, worry-free retirement, with no compromise in lifestyle and no real concern of ever running out of money. It may also be the ability to offer meaningful financial assistance in the financial lives of your children and/or grandchildren, either during your lifetime, in the form of legacies, or both. Or, the transfer of a family business to the next generation. And, don’t forget about those meaningful contributions to a much-loved school, church, charity, museum or other organizations.

We draw on our more than 25 years of financial planning experience, as well as Tomie Schmidt’s Certified Financial Planner™ (CFP®) credentials and strong commitment to building comprehensive, custom plans, to provide you with an unusually strong and deep set of planning strategies and knowledge. We pay attention to what drives you, both in terms of your immediate financial concerns and challenges, as well as your non-financial longer-term goals and passions. Because, at the end of the day, money is just a means to an end; it is useful because of what it can provide for you. And that is your ultimate destination.

If you were asked to identify the most difficult aspect of successful investing, you would probably agree that it’s knowing when – rather than what – to buy and sell. We agree. That’s why our approach to portfolio management uses a proprietary blend of economic indicators that is designed to dynamically position your investment portfolio to weather and profit from what lies ahead.

This approach is different than traditional, more passive buy-and-hold portfolio strategies that remain static despite changing economic conditions. Over the past three decades, we have developed a proprietary blend of 26 Recession Risk Indicators to help identify the probability of a recession within the next 6 to 12 months. When those indicators increase to a certain level, we make portfolio adjustments to mitigate or capitalize upon the impact. Given that the Standard & Poor's 500 Composite Stock Price Index has averaged more than 43.3% declines during the last 12 drawdowns in the past 91 years* (defined as declines of 25% or greater from the peak) , we believe an understanding of and active engagement with this issue is critical for strategic and tactical portfolio management.

Meet The Schmidt Mogseth Group

About Ken Mogseth

Ken Mogseth, CPM®
Senior Vice President, Wealth Management
Financial Advisor
Senior Portfolio Management Director

As a Certified Portfolio Manager (CPM®) and lifelong student of economics, I am relentlessly curious about financial markets and the forces that drive them. Why do markets behave in a particular way? Why do some companies survive and thrive, while others lose their position within the industry? Is it possible to discern from the economic indicators that we are moving into a period of weakness? Most importantly, how can I use that knowledge to benefit my clients?

Since 1987, I have helped clients articulate their goals, build holistic, custom financial plans and navigate through the ups and downs of financial markets and life’s circumstances. I take advantage of every conversation to help our clients strengthen their knowledge and understanding about their finances and the markets. It is equally important to me to continue to grow my own knowledge. I have worked hard to earn advanced credentials and designations that allow me to provide additional value to our clients.

As a Senior Portfolio Management Director, I am one of a select group of Financial Advisors who has been qualified by Morgan Stanley to independently manage client assets. I focus on providing risk- and tax-aware investment strategies that not only help meet our clients’ needs and goals, but are designed to navigate the ever-changing circumstances of financial markets. I combine that role with my credentials as a Certified Portfolio Manager and economist to create proprietary economic market forecasts that allow us to help our clients prepare for and potentially take advantage of economic events before they occur.

I grew up in Vancouver, Washington and attended the University of Puget Sound with the intent of becoming a lawyer. During a freshman economics class, my life took a 180 degree turn as I fell madly in love with the ‘dismal science.’ I dove deeply into the subject and even taught a college-level class during my senior year. After graduation, I joined Proctor and Gamble and spent three years honing my business instincts.

In 1987, I became a Financial Advisor at Dean Witter (Morgan Stanley predecessor firm), helping individuals and families grow, preserve and transfer their wealth. I am proud of the fact that many of my initial clients are still with me, along with their children and grandchildren.

In 2011, I earned the prestigious title of Certified Portfolio Manager, after completing a rigorous curriculum through Columbia University’s Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science. This designation is designed to provide advisors managing discretionary portfolios with a deeper understanding of fundamental security analysis, asset allocation, and portfolio management concepts.

My wife, Cindy, and I have been married since 1986. Now that our two children are young adults, my wife and I have more time to pursue our passions for music and travel. Cindy plays the piano and I enjoy playing guitar and mandolin. We love supporting the area’s local bands and can often be found at music festivals and concerts. We also enjoy serving our community and some of our local non-profit organizations. My bilingual wife provides medical translation services for groups traveling to Mexico. I am a current board member of the Royal Oaks Country Club and have been on the board of Crossroads Community Church since 1998.

About Tomie T Schmidt

Tomie Tada Schmidt, CFP®
Senior Vice President, Wealth Management
Financial Advisor
Portfolio Management Director

As a Certified Financial Planner™ (CFP®), I help ensure that every financial decision you make can support the highest probability of achieving your goals. My comprehensive and customized financial plans are designed to shift with the changing circumstances of your life and provide you with a realistic and attainable roadmap to help you accomplish your priorities and realize your dreams.

My clients actively engage with me in the planning process. We begin by looking at the big picture of your economic situation, including your current priorities and ideal future. Then I map out different financial scenarios, each demonstrating the statistical chance of success. I make sure to stress test the final version – to incorporate the “what ifs” of a possible recession, death of a partner, reduction of pension or social security and other considerations – in order to build a personalized financial plan with the highest likelihood of successfully matching your envisioned future.

Helping achieve financial equilibrium, particularly as you accumulate wealth and responsibilities, takes significant time and energy. It is important to me that you feel confident and comfortable with your decisions around finances and investments. I take a collaborative, transparent and holistic approach to every issue we tackle and spend an incredible amount of time considering which financial choices can make a significant difference in your life. I am also intrigued by people’s behavior around financial decisions and am a student of behavioral finance.

I am a Pacific Northwest native. I grew up in Portland as the oldest of seven children and attended Linfield College in McMinnville, Oregon. In college, I held a national ranking in speech and debate competitions. It taught me how to prepare thoroughly, consider an issue from multiple angles and make a plan with a goal in mind. After graduating with double degrees in finance and speech communications, I moved to Denver, Colorado to work for a private financial firm that provided services to credit unions. My husband, Mark, and I returned to the Pacific Northwest in 2002, where I became a Financial Advisor with Solomon Smith Barney (a Morgan Stanley predecessor firm), eventually joining Ken Mogseth and Chase Wanamaker. I earned an executive certificate in financial planning from the University of Portland and received my CFP® designation in 2005.

Outside of work, my husband and I are raising our two children in the Vancouver-Portland area. Our family loves to ski, play games, watch movies and spend time with friends. I am a voracious audio book reader, I love to bake and I enjoy the paper arts.

About Susan Love

I oversee the day-to-day administrative and operational tasks for the Schmidt Mogseth Group. In addition to working with Ken, Tomie, and Chase, my responsibilities also include focusing on the firm’s administrative systems. I have lived in the Pacific Northwest for most of my life. I have been working in the finance industry since 1999. My career began as a US
Bank employee with Investment Operations. After US Bank merged with a mid-west bank, I went to work for Dain Rauscher which later became RBC Wealth Management. I was at RBC until 2017 when I joined Morgan Stanley.

I currently have over 20 years of industry experience and hold the Series 7 and 66 security licenses. In my free time, I enjoy reading, learning new languages, knitting, spinning, weaving and all things fiber related. I also enjoy working with the youth in the winter drama productions at my church.

About Lauren Larsen

Lauren has always been proud to call the Pacific Northwest her home, specifically Wilsonville, Oregon. Growing up, she spent most of her time outside engaging in many different activities—from playing basketball and running track & field to hiking mountains in the Cascades. To this day, many of her favorite hobbies—hiking, running, photography, traveling, and camping— involve being connected with nature. Lauren also notes that she loves animals—so much so, that she has six very spoiled pets at home (three dogs and three cats).

Lauren attended Oregon State University and graduated summa cum laude with degrees in both finance and marketing. Motivated by her intense desire to learn, she continuously goes above and beyond what is expected of her. Lauren’s attention to detail, passion for helping others, and commitment to providing the highest level of service has helped her build successful and long-lasting relationships. She also does extremely well under pressure, maintaining a positive attitude in even the most difficult and challenging environments. While she pursues her long-term career goals of becoming a financial advisor, Lauren is thrilled to have the opportunity to contribute to her team’s success and build a career at Morgan Stanley.

5An investment in an exchange-traded fund (ETF) involves risks similar to those of investing in a broadly based portfolio of equity securities traded on exchange in the relevant securities market, such as market fluctuations caused by such factors as economic and political developments, changes in interest rates and perceived trends in stock prices. The investment return and principal value of ETF investments will fluctuate, so that an investor’s ETF shares, if or when sold, may be worth more or less than the original cost.

Investors should carefully consider the investment objectives, risks, charges and expenses of an exchange-traded fund (ETF) before investing. The prospectus contains this and other information about the ETF. To obtain a prospectus, contact your Financial Advisor or visit the ETF company’s website. Please read the prospectus carefully before investing.
