    Diversifying Company Equity Holdings
Equity compensation can be a valuable part of your compensation, but as you accumulate company stock over time, including in your 401(k), it may become a disproportionate share of your total portfolio and net worth. If the value of that stock declines—for any reason—your net worth could take a major hit. That’s why it’s a good idea to consider diversifying.

    Tax Considerations with Equity Compensation
To make the most of your equity compensation, you will need to know the tax impact of your equity awards. The type of equity compensation and the length of time you hold the actual shares underlying the award will determine the tax treatment of your equity compensation. Having a strategy to minimize these taxes will allow you to keep more of the equity compensation you’ve earned.

Restricted Stock Units (RSUs) are a promise to deliver shares of company stock to the holders upon vesting. Performance Stock Units (PSUs) are similar to RSUs, but their vesting schedule may be based solely or in addition to on predetermined measures of performance. The employee is not required to pay for the shares when shares are awarded or when they vest. Understanding your RSUs and PSUs are critical when implementing a plan.

About Steve Lucas

Steve knew from the age of 10 that he would someday pursue a career in finance. A major metropolitan newspaper sponsored a stock market game for school-age children in which entrants were required to compile an imaginary portfolio and follow its progress throughout the school year. Steve and his classmates “bought” stocks of companies like Disney because they all liked The Lion King and Nike because many of them wore Nike athletic shoes. It taught Steve an important lesson that remained with him to this day – invest in what you know. And it instilled in him a passion for the markets that compelled him to pursue his chosen career.

A graduate of The University of Maryland with a degree in finance, Steve interned with a major financial firm while in college and began his Morgan Stanley career two days after receiving his diploma. Over the next two decades, he built his practice by focusing not only on investments, but proactive and personalized service. He realized early in his career that performance, while important, is not the only reason why clients remain with their Financial Advisor. Communication and trust are paramount, and Steve developed a client service model that features numerous client contacts and conversations throughout the year.

A Chartered Retirement Plan Specialist and Morgan Stanley-credentialed Executive Financial Services Director, Steve has developed a specialized niche serving growing companies and their executives with guidance on retirement plans, equity compensation and diversification of consolidated stock positions. He has also helped numerous business owners facilitate their exit strategies by preparing for and adapting to those major liquidity events.

Steve was named a Forbes Best-in-State Wealth Advisor in 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021. Additionally in 2016 through 2020, he was cited by Forbes in its ranking of America’s Top Next Generation Wealth Advisors. Steve takes pride in these accomplishments and in his ability to make the intangible tangible for his clients by educating them on the complexities they face.

An avid runner, Steve has competed in the Boston and New York Marathons, among other well-known long distance running events. He was president of his college fraternity and still supports its charitable efforts, supporting organizations seeking to find better treatments for Dandy Walker Syndrome. Steve and his wife Lindsey have two young sons and when Steve isn’t running or advising clients, he can often be found coaching his kids’ T-ball team.
