About The Harbor East Group at Morgan Stanley

“All happy families are alike,” in the opinion of Leo Tolstoy who wrote those words about 150 years ago.

We don’t agree.

In our experience, happy families can be traditional mom, pop and kids; blended families with children from different marriages; single parent families, two dad or two mom families; multi-generational families and even families with no children or grandchildren.

These are our clients and each of them requires and deserves an investment approach that is created to meet their unique needs, goals and risk tolerance.

We’re The Harbor East Group at Morgan Stanley, a team of experienced financial professionals who take pride in creating customized investment strategies for every client we serve. Thomas Kimmerle is a Morgan Stanley-credentialed Portfolio Manager who assumes responsibility for day-to-day investment decisions to help you make the best decisions for your family.

HOW WE WORK WITH YOU

We purposely limit our practice to a relatively small number of clients so we can give each of them the attention they deserve. Our process for working with you includes the following steps:

  • Getting To Know You
What do you hope to achieve and when do you hope to achieve it? How do you think about investments – are you interested in growing what you have saved or is conserving wealth your main priority? Our initial conversations will focus on who you are as a person, as well as an investor. We will also review your assets, liabilities and any expectations you might have for future sources of income like a pension, inheritance or Social Security.
  • Creating Your Personalized Plan
We use what we have learned about you to create a comprehensive financial plan with tangible recommendations for pursuing your goals. Will you be able to retire on time, for example? Are you saving enough? We will run different scenarios, to give you a good idea of where you are in relation to your goals and what you can do to close any gaps that might exist. Once we find a path that is right for you, we can begin implementing your family's financial plan.
  • Taking Action
It's important to note that until this point, you are not our client. You have not entrusted us with assets, nor are you charged any fees for the services we have offered. Now that you have a plan with recommendations, we want you to take the time to think it over and perhaps confer with family members and trusted advisors, if you wish. Once you are ready to become our client, we will begin implementing your plan with a customized investment approach. This includes creating an asset allocation to meet your risk tolerance, while giving you a realistic opportunity to meet the objectives we identified together.
  • Following Up
Are you proceeding as anticipated toward the goals we identified or is an adjustment required? Have new priorities arisen as a result of changing circumstances in your life? We monitor your strategies to determine whether they are still suitable, given your current needs, as well as fluctuating financial markets. Since we limit our practice size, we are able to spend more time with our clients. We believe this increased attention will allow our clients better financial outcomes.
Working With Our Team, You can Expect That We Will:
  • Develop a detailed financial strategy based on your goals
  • Set up a long-term, balanced wealth plan
  • Take the emotion out of money moves, so you can make smart decisions
  • Be flexible. When changes come to your life, or in the market, I’ll tweak your financial strategy.
Some of our work is best coordinated with your other key advisors. If you like, we can connect directly with your:
  • Tax specialist
  • Trust attorney
  • Insurance professional
  • Family office

Sample Financial Plan

We provide a financial plan at no cost to prospective clients. All of our recommendations for your custom plan and custom portfolio are derived through this process. While a financial plan is a wonderful tool, you still need to find the right team to execute your plan. We believe we are the team for you.

This sample financial plan showcases how Jill and Jack Hill can retire, take care of their daughters, and plan for their vacation home; all while potentially reducing the level of risk in their portfolio.
Pages 8-10 'Personal Information and Summary of Financial Goals'
These pages show the goals Jill and Jack would like to accomplish above basic retirement spending. The Hill's would like to purchase a vacation home and help their daughters cover wedding costs, just to name a few.
Page 16 'Model Portfolio Table'
In this example, these models are used to measure risk. Model 1 is a more conservative portfolio and Model 5 represents a riskier portfolio. The green square represents Jill and Jack's current portfolio. It shows how much risk they are taking versus our risk models.
Pages 17-26 'What If Worksheet'
These pages show two scenarios, "Current"(left column) and "De-Risk"(right column). Page 18 shows that Jill and Jack have a higher probability of funding their retirement goals, if they take less risk in their portfolio. By assuming less risk in their portfolio, Jill and Jack have a higher likelihood of achieving their longer-term goals and they may find it a little easier to sleep at night.

Meet The Harbor East Group

About Thomas C Kimmerle

Tom brings 30 years of experience to every client he serves. He began his career as an accountant but soon realized that he derived more satisfaction from helping people achieve life goals through comprehensive wealth management.

As a Certified Financial Planner, Tom creates customized plans that encompass not only his clients’ investments, but virtually every aspect of their financial lives. He understands how to implement the plans over longer periods of time so that clients stand a better chance of reaching the goals to which they aspire.

A graduate of Colorado State University with a BS in Business Administration, Tom joined Morgan Stanley in 2001.He is a Morgan Stanley-credentialed Portfolio Management Director who often manages client assets on a discretionary basis, and assumes responsibility for day-to-day investment decisions his clients would rather not make on their own. He also takes full advantage of Morgan Stanley’s robust Advisory Platform, known as Consulting Group. He analyzes and identifies third party investment managers with the ability to invest a portion of his clients’ portfolios. He finds that this approach helps clients eliminate emotion from the investment process and remain steadfast to their plan when markets fluctuate. Tom believes this process will lead to better outcomes for his clients.

Tom splits his time between Baltimore’s historic Mt. Vernon district and Rehoboth Beach, DE. Tom enjoys gardening and travel.
