Welcome

Financial success often brings greater complexity. Retirement, investments, cash flow, taxes, lending, insurance, estate considerations, and family priorities can become increasingly interconnected. The challenge is not simply addressing each area individually but understanding how decisions in one area may affect the others.

At the Guerry/Kinney Group, financial planning provides the structure for those decisions. We begin by understanding what a client’s resources need to support, which decisions may lie ahead, and the trade-offs among them. Investment strategy, lending, insurance, account structure, and other financial decisions are then considered in the context of the broader plan rather than in isolation.

Our team is organized around complementary areas of focus working as one coordinated client experience. Financial planning helps define what the client’s resources need to accomplish, investment management aligns client assets with those objectives, and our Concierge Team supports the ongoing service, documentation, account maintenance, scheduling, and follow-up that help keep the work moving. When appropriate, we also coordinate with CPAs, attorneys, Private Bankers, and other professionals whose work intersects with the plan.

What matters is not simply access to individual services, but how those services are connected over time. Our objective is to help clients bring greater organization to their financial lives, establish clearer priorities, coordinate implementation, and make better decisions as circumstances change.

A financial plan should begin with the life it is meant to support. Before considering investments or other strategies, we first seek to understand what a client's resources need to accomplish, which decisions may be approaching, and where flexibility matters.

    Planning Gives Investing Direction

We believe investments should serve the financial plan rather than define it. Planning establishes the outcomes a client is working toward, the resources available to support them, and the tradeoffs involved. That context provides direction for investment decisions and helps determine how much risk is reasonably necessary.

Taking more investment risk is not an objective in itself. Liquidity, time horizon, potential drawdowns, plan sufficiency, and the ability to remain invested all matter. The goal is to take the amount of risk reasonably necessary to support the plan—not simply as much risk as a client might tolerate.

    Icon Image
    Coordination Matters

Important financial decisions rarely exist in isolation. Investments, taxes, lending, insurance, estate planning, cash flow, and account ownership can affect one another.

For that reason, we place a high value on coordination—within our team and, when appropriate, with a client's CPA, attorney, Private Banker, and other professionals. A sound decision is more useful when its timing, responsibilities, and broader implications are understood.

    Icon Image
    Preparation Over Prediction

Markets, tax laws, careers, family circumstances, and priorities change. We do not believe a durable financial strategy should depend on consistently predicting what happens next.

Instead, we emphasize preparation: preserving flexibility, identifying important decisions before timing becomes restrictive, and understanding tradeoffs before they become urgent. The objective is not to eliminate uncertainty, but to create a better framework for making decisions within it.

    Icon Image
    From Planning to Execution

Our process follows a recurring progression:

    Discovery → Plan → Strategy → Execution → Review → Adapt

We begin by understanding the client's circumstances and priorities, translate them into a plan, determine how the appropriate financial strategies should work together, and establish responsibility for carrying those decisions forward.

The process does not end with implementation. Review helps identify changes in the client's circumstances, assumptions, priorities, or required outcomes. When those changes matter, we adapt the plan, strategy, or implementation accordingly – so the client's financial decisions continue to reflect the life they are intended to support.

    Order of Returns Matter
Most people understand the importance of long-term returns, but fewer understand the role that timing plays, especially once you begin withdrawing from your portfolio. This short video explains why the sequence of returns matter more than most realize – and how the right planning can help weather the early years of retirement with greater confidence.

Above the Market 42: Good Times, First Times and Last Times
One way to look at life is as a series of memories we string together like pearls on a chain. Unlike a necklace however, the pearls don’t look the same; some memories are bigger than others and some are more pleasant than others. Nevertheless, as we travel along our paths we are continually adding them to our collection.

Above the Market 45: Cold Water, Clear Perspective
Cold water has a way of focusing the mind. You feel, you notice it, and it brings you into the moment. Financial decisions can work the same way. Discomfort, complexity, or uncertainty often signal exactly where our attention is needed. The financial plans we create for our clients aren’t designed to avoid the allegorical cold water – they’re designed to help you move through it with confidence.

Above the Market 46: When Loss Doesn’t Win
Behavioral finance talks about something called “loss aversion” – our tendency to feel pain from losses far more than pleasure from gains. And it’s true; without some emotional ballast, we might overreact, ruminate, or spiral over things that happen, but don’t have to hurt us. What planning gives us – financially, emotionally – is the ability to respond instead of react.

Making Executive Compensation Part of the Plan

For many executives, compensation is more than salary. Equity awards, stock options, restricted stock units, employee stock purchase plans, deferred compensation, and workplace benefits can all affect taxes, cash flow, investment risk, and retirement decisions.

We help clients evaluate those issues in the context of the broader financial plan so that decisions about executive compensation fit with the rest of their financial lives.
Equity Compensation
Equity compensation can represent a significant part of an executive’s financial resources. Vesting schedules, taxes, liquidity needs, and exposure to company stock can interact with other financial decisions, making it important to consider the compensation package as a whole.
Click Here to Learn More About Equity Compensation
Stock Options
Stock options involve decisions about when and whether to exercise, how to fund the exercise, the resulting tax consequences, and how much company stock to continue holding. Those choices should be considered alongside liquidity needs, portfolio risk, and longer-term financial objectives.
Click Here to Learn More About Stock Options
Restricted Stock Units (RSU)
Restricted Stock Units create recurring decisions as awards vest and shares become available. Tax withholding, cash-flow needs, and the choice to hold or sell shares can all affect the executive’s overall exposure to company stock.
Click Here to Learn More About Restricted Stock Units (RSU)
Concentrated Stock
Company stock can become a substantial portion of an executive’s net worth over time. Diversification, liquidity, taxes, and portfolio risk should be considered together when determining how that position fits within the rest of the financial picture.
Deferred Compensation
Deferred compensation can influence retirement timing, future cash flow, taxes, and the sequencing of other financial decisions. Distribution elections and payout schedules deserve particular attention as an executive approaches a career transition or retirement.

Meet The Guerry / Kinney Group

About R Alan Guerry

Growing up in the Atlanta suburb of Lilburn, I spent more time than most in doctor’s offices, which initially sparked an interest in medicine. However, after my first anatomy class and an encounter with a formaldehyde cat at the University of Georgia, I quickly realized I wasn’t cut out for medical school. Thankfully, a different passion had already taken root when my grandfather introduced me to investing at 15, gifting me a book that opened my eyes to the world of finance. Soon, I was poring over the business section, following local giants like Coca-Cola and Southern Company, and fascinated by the idea that anyone could own a piece of the world’s largest companies.

Though I graduated from UGA with a degree in Biochemistry, my heart was set on a career in finance. After six months of persistence, I began my journey at Merrill Lynch, eventually navigating the turbulence of the 2008 financial crisis at Smith Barney, which later became Morgan Stanley Wealth Management.

Today, I serve as a Portfolio Management Director with the Guerry/Kinney Group at Morgan Stanley, where we focus on comprehensive wealth management for affluent families, individuals, and business owners. My primary responsibilities include managing risk, asset allocation, and portfolio diversification strategies. More risk doesn’t always mean more reward; we customize portfolios to match our clients’ goals, ensuring they only take the amount of risk necessary to achieve their objectives. Managing risk and actively considering capital gains is a core part of our approach, with my partner Trey—a Certified Financial Planner (CFP)—handling financial plans that guide our portfolio management strategies.

On a personal note, I live in Alpharetta with my wife Traci and our dog Harley Quinn (though it’s just “Harley” unless she’s in trouble). Our son Tristan is studying business and finance at Young Harris College, and I’ve been involved in children’s ministry at North Point Community Church since 2000, where I continue to serve as a small group leader. Outside of work, I’m passionate about health, fitness, reading, and music, and I love spending time in the mountains or at the beach whenever I can step away.

About Trey Kinney

I have always had a passion for problem solving and close personal connections.  Growing up in the small town of Valley, Alabama I learned to appreciate the tremendous value of relationships.  In school I found I had an affinity for math and science and ultimately graduated from Georgia Tech with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. I began my career as a field engineer for GE Power Systems where I used a hands-on approach to manage projects and client relationships. I enjoyed working with clients in the Southeast and building trusting relationships by providing practical solutions to the unique issues at each plant.  After four years of continuous travel however, I was ready for a change but not quite sure what it was going to be.

As I began to explore options, a friend’s father spoke to me about his long-term career as a Financial Advisor. After meeting with him, I realized that what he did combined the things I enjoy most:  building trusting personal relationships and using analytical skills to solve problems. I joined Merrill Lynch’s training program in 1999 and immediately began studying to become a Certified Financial Planner (CFP®). As a CFP®, I take a holistic view of clients’ financial picture to understand their life goals and priorities. To better assist clients with the complexities of retirement planning, I subsequently obtained the Chartered Retirement Planning Counselor (CRPC®) designation.  I find nothing more rewarding than helping clients achieve a work-optional lifestyle and leave a lasting legacy.

My wife Jenny and I live in Roswell, GA, along with our son Sam.  I am an active member of Northbrook United Methodist Church and enjoy golf, fishing, and tennis. In the fall I can be found tailgating at all the Georgia Tech home games.
