After many years of working alongside each other, Michael Campopiano and Arthur Burkhard came together to bring over 50 years of combined experience to their clients and create The Guardian Group at Morgan Stanley.

Due to the fact that each person and family has their own unique needs, concerns and goals, The Guardian Group emphasizes the importance of creating a financial plan for all of their clients. We believe financial plans are constructed as a roadmap to success for individuals and families. We believe in being involved in our clients’ lives and our group members are required to be continuously involved at every life stage.

          The piece of mind that comes with a personalized financial plan makes our clients better investors. Far too many investors focus on the performance of their investment portfolio. This is not to imply that performance is not important but the daily, weekly and monthly swings of the stock market should never be the focus of long-term investing. A well-conceived financial plan is comprehensive and helps us understand that the investment portfolio is only one element in our financial lives. Since the financial plan takes into consideration sources of income, real estate, insurance, pensions, social security, gifts, and various expenses it helps clients understand that the investment portfolio is only part of their overall financial health. There is no doubt that the investment portfolio one of the most important elements of the financial plan, but during the initial discovery stage clients will understand there are many other financial elements in their lives that need attention. Once a client appreciates these other elements they become more adept at being patient and calm during inevitable market pull backs. As such, our clients with a well-conceived financial plan understand that market declines are part of the process and not events to dread and react to. Our goal is to put our client’s on a prudent path towards success and peace of mind, and the implementation of our plan analysis is key to its outcome.
        • Exploring Solutions After Changes in Your Financial Picture
          Recently a couple came to us for advice. They were at a crossroads in their lives as they wrestled with their impending retirement, the wind down of their closely held business and managing, liquid and illiquid, assets they had just inherited. The couple was struggling with the best way to make all of these pieces work together. Could they now afford to retire? Did they want to retire and if so, when? What was the best use of the newly inherited assets? They inherited a home. Should they sell the inherited California real estate and invest the funds? Should they renovate the property and rent it out? With the cash they inherited should they pay down their own mortgage or would they be better off using that cash for investments?

          We began the process with a face-to-face meeting which is always our preference during the discovery and planning process. The meeting was used to gather specific information on the couple. Our discovery process is open and friendly. The conversation allowed us to better understand the needs, concerns, hopes and dreams of the couple. The information gathered leads to a comprehensive, personalized financial plan. The financial plan provided the couple with four distinct scenarios. Each scenario was based on separate decisions and lead to four distinct outcomes with varying degrees of success. The financial plan allowed the couple to calmly look at each scenario and come to an informed decision. The financial plan provided the couple with a great sense of comfort and peace of mind, knowing they had options. The plan analysis provided us with a template on how best to allocate their investable assets, explore lowering their mortgage expense, setting up a line of credit for future real estate investing, and to properly review their life insurance needs. The result of the customized plan was based on their personal needs and concerns and not a simplistic, formulaic plan simply based on their age.
        • Estate and Legacy Planning
          How much will we be able to leave to our family? What amount should we use to fund our family foundation? How can we reduce our potential overall estate tax liability? How can we positively impact our grandson who has special needs, even beyond our lives? These are questions that most of us will face at some point. These are also questions that can be answered as part of one’s financial plan. Recently an ultra-high net worth couple posed these very questions to us. Our clients were in their early 70’s and our original plan many years earlier showed with a high degree of certainty they would be able to enjoy their retirement, without any concerns. However, our clients were now interested in establishing a legacy and providing care to family members. The couple wanted to leave as much to their children as possible and would like to help their grandchildren with their college educations, among other things.

          Like in every family, there are always dynamics that present an issue that can be solved with proper planning and guidance. As we have been working with our clients for many years, we knew of some of these family dynamics, such as their son’s second marriage, a grandson’s special needs, and making sure that the wealth their heir’s receive does not change this family’s mission of sound stewardship. Through our planning capabilities and firm resources, we were able to develop a sophisticated estate and legacy plan for our client’s, utilizing various revocable and irrevocable trusts, adding Morgan Stanley as a professional trustee, and using some life insurance for estate taxes and their special needs grandson. Our clients can be proud of the planning they have done and will continue to review. The importance of the couple to maintain the family mission has been built in as a theme to the overall estate and legacy they wish to leave beyond their lifetime.

        About Me

        Michael Campopiano is a Senior Vice President with 15 years of experience working with families on their financial, retirement, and estate plans.  As a solutions-based Wealth Advisor, Michael handles the construction and execution of the client’s plan.  Michael is also a Senior Portfolio Management Director, which allows him the capability of managing client investment portfolios on a direct and discretionary basis. Michael was also named to Forbes Magazine's List of America's Best-in-State Wealth Advisors in 2018.  

        Michael started in Wealth Management as a college intern, while attending his alma mater, University of La Verne.  At the University of La Verne he majored in Finance and also played for the school’s soccer team.  

        Michael continues to live in La Verne with his wife, Alicia, and their three children.  Outside of the office, Michael is involved with his children at their various sporting events, involved with the University of La Verne’s capital campaign, and the capital campaign for his alma mater, Damien High School.  With any extra time, Michael still enjoys playing soccer and working to improve his golf game.

        About Me

        Art Burkhard is a First Vice President with 35 years of experience assisting families in the retention, growth and generational transfer of their hard earned assets.  Art began his investment career in 1981 with Dean Witter primarily as a portfolio advisor to individuals.  Over time Dean Witter evolved into Morgan Stanley and Art embraced more comprehensive solutions to family financial planning. 

        Art’s education background includes a Bachelor’s Degree in Geography and a Master Degree in Geomorphology from California State University, Northridge.  While on his way to a career in the energy sector he was sidetracked into financial advising and has been here ever since. 

        Art lives in Altadena with his wife Suzy and two wonderful children.  Art currently serves as president of the Board of Directors at Pasadena Christian School.  When not volunteering for the Make-A-Wish Foundation he enjoys camping, fly fishing, stained glass construction and the struggles of golf.

        As a Senior Client Service Associate, Kaira is the Administrative coordinator for The Guardian Group. She handles all administrative items: opening new accounts, document preparation and support clients in all areas except trade related functions, etc.

        Kaira has worked for Morgan Stanley for the last 18 years.

        Kaira is married with three kids. In her spare time she enjoys spending time with her family and volunteering for Mt. Baldy Pop Warner Conference, which she has participated with for the last 11 years.
