The Fulcrum Story

Bob Gibbons and Tom Poteat first met in 1996 when each were working in downtown Manhattan as Financial Advisors. Bob was at Dean Witter (now Morgan Stanley) in the World Trade Center while Tom was at Oppenheimer in the World Financial Center. Nearly two decades later, they found themselves seated next to each other at Morgan Stanley’s Rockefeller Center Office in 2015. After a year of working next to each other, they realized that forming a partnership with their diverse skill sets would create a more meaningful and effective way to serve their clients. In 2016, they created the Fulcrum Group.

The Fulcrum Group works in partnership with their clients to build and sustain wealth over generations. Together with the families they serve, they create, execute, and monitor highly creative and dynamic financial plans that are customized to meet the goals and unique circumstances of every family.

Clients work with the Fulcrum Group for the peace of mind they instill as a result of their ability to listen and collaborate. They serve every aspect of their clients’ financial decisions, which includes college planning, retirement planning, estate planning, financing, corporate compensation plans, and tax planning.

The Fulcrum Group accomplishes results through extensive client contact to develop a deep understanding of all aspects of their clients’ lives with a focus on the People, Ideas, Organizations, Activities and Things that are most important to them. This understanding is the key element to their clients’ success.

Working With You

At The Fulcrum New York Group at Morgan Stanley, we value loyalty to each other and to the individuals and families we serve every day. Helping our clients transition into the next stage of their lives after a major financial event is what we pride ourselves on. Through a variety of collaborative efforts, we are highly engaged in striving to create a better and brighter future for our clients.

    Step 1: Discovery Call
This in-depth conversation provides us with the opportunity to get to know you and your family, so that we may potentially develop strategies and customize the relationship to help best meet your needs.
    Icon Image
    Step 2: Receive Financial Statements
After our Discovery Call, we will ask you to send us your Financial Statements. This will help us to determine your risk tolerance, analyze your current investment portfolio, develop an asset allocation strategy, and construct a tailored portfolio for you.
    Icon Image
Step 3: Present Rough Draft of Financial Plan
Every client is provided with a LifeView Financial Plan and Goal Analysis. Doing this allows the team to understand their clients' goals. If a client does not feel comfortable with this process, we would not be able to have a comprehensive understanding of their full financial picture and therefore cannot help them.
    Icon Image
Step 4: Present Final Draft of Financial Plan
After making any necessary changes to the initial version of your Financial Plan, we will present you with a final draft of your Financial Plan. If everything is acceptable to you, we will continue on to the next step of our process.
    Icon Image
Step 5: Implementation of Financial Plan
Once client goals are determined, we will be able to create and maintain a proper asset allocation for each client. After comprehensive due diligence and analysis of expected results across multiple market scenarios are performed, strategies are chosen from our expansive investment platform.
    Icon Image
Step 6: Ongoing Assessment & Monitoring
We will conduct ongoing reviews and comprehensive reporting to ensure that your strategy adapts to changing financial and family needs. We find that actively communicating at least 5-6 times per year with our clients is one of the keys to a good relationship.

Meet The Fulcrum New York Group

About Robert Gibbons

Bob began his career as a Financial Advisor at Morgan Stanley over 30 years ago after graduating from the University of Richmond in Virginia. Along with fellow Morgan Stanley Financial Advisor, Tom Poteat, Bob co-founded the Fulcrum New York Group at Morgan Stanley to harness the full resources of the firm. As a Senior Portfolio Management Director and Family Wealth Advisor, Bob works with High-Net-Worth Families to develop, implement and monitor tailored investment strategies designed to achieve a client’s goals.

Bob is married to his high school sweetheart and lives with his two children in his hometown in Connecticut. He has served as a coach in both little league baseball and youth soccer for his two children. He supports many local charities and is an active member of his local Exchange Club where he serves on the Grants and Donations Committee. Additionally, Bob is a strong supporter of the University of Richmond and serves on the Alumni Recruitment Committee, the College Fair Committee and previously served on the 25th Reunion Committee. Bob previously served as a Board Member and Ski Instructor for the Bart Adaptive Sport Center, an organization that teaches adults and children with disabilities to ski at both Bromley Mountain and Stratton Mountain in Vermont.

About Thomas G Poteat

Tom started his financial career in 1996 at Dean Witter Trust, and soon became a financial Advisor at Oppenheimer.  At Oppenheimer, he was introduced to Managed Money or working with private asset managers.  He was recruited to Laidlaw Global Securities to create and build an asset management division. In April of 1999, Smith Barney (now Morgan Stanley) recruited Tom to improve and build upon their financial planning process. This has become the backbone to Tom’s planning process.

His thorough understanding of corporate stock options along with retirement income planning enables him to build balanced portfolios by using a blend of many asset classes including stocks and bonds. Tom believes it is thrill to help corporate executives put together a tax efficient strategy to reduce exposure to concentrated stock positions.

He is involved with the following organizations: NestUSA.org, Central Park, and GLAAD.  Tom formerly served on the advisory board of NestUSA.org which provides free software to improve English literacy for grades K-3.

Tom earned his Bachelor’s of Science from College of Charleston with a minor in French.  In 1995, after college, he moved to NYC without a job, a place to live or ever visiting the city.  Essentially, he loaded up the U-Haul and moved to NYC to see the world.  While most people would view this as a big risk, Tom would argue that the real risk was not taking the risk.  New York City has been his personal MBA program in food, culture and work experience.

Tom resides in Midtown Manhattan. He likes to spend his time reading science fiction, seeing plays, movies and enjoys Citi-biking around town.  In the summer, he plays softball with the Big Apple Softball League.

“My relationships with clients over the years have been phenomenal… watching families grow up and helping them achieve their financial goals.  I enjoy helping and teaching clients about finance.  I have always encouraged my clients to ask questions no matter what, it is the best way to learn.  Our balance based approach has helped clients navigate and weather these financial storms.”  - Tom P.

9Investors should consider many factors before deciding which 529 plan is appropriate. Some of these factors include: the Plan’s investment options and the historical investment performance of these options, the Plan’s flexibility and features, the reputation and expertise of the Plan’s investment manager, Plan contribution limits and the federal and state tax benefits associated with an investment in the Plan. Some states, for example, offer favorable tax treatment and other benefits to their residents only if they invest in the state’s own Qualified Tuition Program. Investors should determine their home state’s tax treatment of 529 plans when considering whether to choose an in-state or out-of-state plan. Investors should consult with their tax or legal advisor before investing in any 529 Plan or contact their state tax division for more information. Morgan Stanley Smith Barney LLC does not provide tax and/or legal advice.
