Your Journey, Our Guidance

Everyone, at some point in their life, will be faced with a fork in the road or a change of direction—often unexpectedly. When these moments inevitably occur, they can be overwhelming. These are the moments in which we thrive.

Maybe you have experienced a death in the family, a divorce, an insurance settlement, selling a business or property, a career change, retirement, an inheritance, or perhaps you just want to consolidate and simplify your life.

In these moments of change, good and bad, it is important to be aware of your choices and why one direction may be better than another. Anticipating the unexpected, as much as possible, also calms the nerves.

Being in a moment of change isn’t a prerequisite to working with us—we’d love to already know you before these stressful moments happen. Trust, education, and plans do not come together overnight. Yet if we start today, tomorrow will be a little easier. If the change—whatever it is—has already happened, the same is true. We can help you navigate, one step at a time.

Your life is going to take twists and turns. This is unavoidable. When it does, your plans may require some flexibility. The path, however, doesn’t need to be taken alone. Come, sit down, and tell us about you. We’ll walk together from there.

Jake Beard's thoughts after a mere 50 years with this incredible enterprise called Morgan Stanley.

When you’re green you grow. When you’re ripe you rot. Green is better…but you already knew that.
During certain milestones in everyone’s career, it’s healthy to take an inventory of what you’ve learned. That thought awakened me at 3:00am. Taking pen in hand, here’s what came out:
  • If you surround yourself with quality people and let them do what they do best, something good will result.
  • If you surround yourself with beautiful thoughts, beautiful people, beautiful things and beautiful deeds, something of lasting value will result.
  • Bright, competent, capable people…including financial advisors, portfolio managers and seasoned investors…can and will have their particular style/discipline, occasionally, go out of favor. That’s normal and does not mean they’ve suddenly lost it. To the contrary, I think it simply says that short-term trends are less than predictable. In my view, long-term, quality rules the day.
  • Unlike popular belief, asking for help, relying on others, admitting mistakes and recognizing limitations are actually signs of strength.
  • Knowing who knows is far more important than knowing.
  • Love is more powerful than hate; happiness is more productive than moodiness; sharing is more gratifying than getting; imagination is more powerful than facts; a whisper can be louder than a shout; friends are more important than stuff; and laughter is the magical elixir. Together, these choices can change the world.
  • Markets will volatate…so get used to it. OK, that’s a made-up word. (Remember, this was written in the middle of the night.)
  • While indifference separates and hurts everyone, kindness heals; gentleness echoes; forgiveness restores; trustworthiness calms; love wins.
  • MOST SIGNIFICANTLY, know that you are important. You are needed. You are valued. You are loved. And above all else, always be mindful that you are an unrepeatable miracle: a masterpiece of the highest order.
  • Thank you, dear friends and colleagues, for allowing me to be part of your life, your family. And thank you for being you. (By the way, the word “retirement” is definitely NOT in my vocabulary; nor even a bleep on the radar.) JRB

Meet The Beard Harper Group

About Kristin Harper

Kristin Harper joined the Firm in January of 2008 as a Client Service Associate. In an effort to continue servicing our clients more comprehensively, she became a Financial Advisor in 2010. With a background in publishing, advertising and design, Kristin wanted to increase her industry knowledge beyond investment management to include a deeper understanding of estate planning, insurance, taxes, and financial planning. Thus, in 2012, Kristin completed her Certified Financial Planner™ designation.
Kristin and her husband, Luke, met at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, MN. Today they have two children and live in St. Louis Park. Luke is an audio engineer, teacher, and entrepreneur. Kristin stays connected with the community and her outside passions by volunteering with the Greater Wayzata Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual art fair, creating artwork with her children, designing websites for friends, and reading. A few of her favorite books include, The Night Circus (Morgenstern), The Adventures of Kavalier and Clay (Chabon), Cutting for Stone (Verghese), and The Art of Racing in the Rain (Stein).

What do you find most satisfying about your business?

Kristin: Building relationships, educating clients, and helping people find potential solutions to the many puzzles that develop in their lives. Trying to demystify investing and lending for clients and creating a sense of “we can do this together” – is very satisfying.

About John (Jake) Beard

John (nicknamed “Jake”) Beard is a native of Green Bay, Wisconsin where at the age of 12, he became one of the nation's youngest Boy Scouts to attain the rank of Eagle. He has lived in the Twin Cities since finishing his Army Reserve training in 1968. Jake studied business and economics at the University of Wisconsin, Whitewater and began his career in 1969 with Dean Witter & Co. prior to their merging with Morgan Stanley. Further studies were then completed at the Wharton School.

Jake is a co-founder of the Wayzata Prayer Breakfast and the Lake Minnetonka Chilly Open; a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow; a WCCO Good Neighbor; a Wayzata Chamber of Commerce Person of the Year; chaired the advisory boards for the MN Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation and the Bell Museum of Natural History and served on the U of MN’s Friends of the Libraries Advisory Board. His wife, Nan, and he live in an 1890 Deephaven home; have two children, Kristin and  Joe; three grandchildren and a misbehaved English Setter: Macy.

Their daughter, Kristin, has been his business partner since 2008. Their wealth advisory practice consists of caring for and building multigenerational relationships with a select number of families…from business owners to widows/widowers, from retirees to corporate executives—as well as their children and grandchildren.

If you can’t find him in Wayzata, look to the woods. When not tracking down wily gobblers, ruffed grouse, pheasants, ducks or morel mushrooms, he’ll probably be kayaking in pursuit of largemouth bass.

What do you find most satisfying about your business?

John: In this profession, (perhaps in all professions), satisfaction comes when you’re able to touch another’s life in a positive dimension. It comes when they leave your presence happier, healthier, and a bit savvier than when they arrived. It comes when you see in their eye that they feel appreciated and understood. And, it comes when you can lay your head on your pillow each night and answer affirmatively to the question, “Was today a day to which I’d be willing to sign my name?”

5The returns on a portfolio consisting primarily of Environmental, Social and Governance (“ESG”) aware investments may be lower or higher than a portfolio that is more diversified or where decisions are based solely on investment considerations. Because ESG criteria exclude some investments, investors may not be able to take advantage of the same opportunities or market trends as investors that do not use such criteria. Diversification does not guarantee a profit or protect against loss in a declining financial market.
