“If you don’t control your emotions, your emotions will control your acts. And that’s not good” – Mariano Rivera
Why do people make poor investment decisions? Why do they ignore well-known concepts and advice?
Because they are human beings.
People make purchase decisions of all kinds in search of three types of benefits: utilitarian, expressive and emotional. Seeking a good return on an investment is a utilitarian benefit. But there are emotional and expressive ones as well.
The Wall Street Journal cited a survey of amateur investors which showed that 62% expected to outperform the overall market over the next 12 months.* Does that sound feasible? Not only do amateurs lack the information and time of professionals, they also tend to trade heavily, which studies show can suppress returns.
So why do it? One reason: it offers emotional benefits. It’s fun, even when you lose (you could enjoy batting against the great relief pitcher who we quote above, even if he strikes you out). And we like what it says about us.
Similar emotions may lead investors to make other foolish errors, like getting out of the market when it’s down, and getting back in when it goes up. There are countless other examples.
At the Andre Group, we are fascinated by this and other implications of the emerging field of Behavioral Finance. We believe it demonstrates the importance of working with a team of professionals, whose advice and discipline can help mitigate the negative effects of emotions.
Emotions are human. We all have them. But we should be aware of them and not let them drive our investment decisions.

OUR FIVE PRINCIPLES FOR EFFECTIVE INVESTING
Over the years, we have developed some guidelines we use when constructing investment portfolios. We believe these simple ideas help clients reach their goals.
1. Focus on Clearly Articulated Objectives
Every asset in a portfolio should be chosen for a specific reason, as part of an overall wealth management strategy.
2. Maintain a Consistent Long Term Asset Allocation
Asset allocation has a huge impact on portfolio performance. We rebalance portfolios consistently to maintain the proper asset allocation.
3. Balance Types of Equity Assets
There are times when a low-cost stock fund (either managed or ETF) is as good as, or better, than individual equities. We use both, and believe in both.
4. Keep it Simple
This is our approach to all wealth management, not just investing. We believe it enhances performance, and it’s better for our clients.
5. Minimize Negatives
A strong return is great, but not if it’s eaten up by fees and taxes. And why take risk if it’s not necessary to achieve an objective?
