About Mark Linden

Starting in 1996, Mark Linden has 25 years of experience in the financial services industry and is the Senior Portfolio Manager of the team. Over the years, Mark has held a number of roles. Out of college, Mark began his career at George S. Olive as a public accountant. During his time there, he passed the CPA exam and developed a great technical framework for a career in financial services. Mark then moved on to become a credit analyst at Bank One, now known as Chase. Following this, he spent several years in business development at Newcourt Financial, where he was able to develop his sales and marketing skills. Mark then ultimately made the decision to become a Financial Advisor, joining AG Edwards in 2000. While working there, he studied to become a Certified Financial Planner, passing the CFP exam in 2007. In 2010, he joined Morgan Stanley.

Mark’s favorite part of the business is helping clients put together a financial game plan that makes something that can seem overwhelming and complex into something that is easy to understand. His role within the team allows him to wear different “hats.” His responsibilities can include market/investment analyst, financial planner and teacher. On any given day, he could be wearing one or all of those hats. Mark enjoys certain technical aspects of the business, but he also very much enjoys the interaction with people.

Quite simply, Mark’s approach is to make sure clients are making informed and intelligent decisions with their resources depending on what their goals might be. No two clients have the exact same goals even if they have similar assets and demographics. Mark strives to develop a customized, easy to understand plan for each client. Wealth management can be a very complicated subject. He is confident that he is able to show clients a better way to accomplish what they are trying to get done – even those with strong financial backgrounds.

Outside of work, Mark is a very involved member of his community. For many years, he has been a volunteer football and basketball coach at the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. He has served as the treasurer and as a board member for the Meridian Hills Country Club. Mark also currently serves on the Indianapolis Catholic Youth Organization board. In addition, him and his wife Meg are both Butler University graduates and are supporters of multiple organizations of the University.

Mark is happily married to his wife Meg of 21 years. They have three children; Katie (15), Jack (13), and Molly (9). They spend a lot of time with their children and their various activities. Katie rides hunter/jumper horses and plays volleyball. Jack is an avid football, basketball, and baseball player and Molly is lover of all things outdoors and animals. He is most passionate about spending time with his family and helping his kids be their best selves. Mark is also an avid golfer.

About Jon Hicks

Joining Morgan Stanley in November of 2020, Jonathan Hicks is a Financial Advisor with The 1816 Group. Prior to joining Morgan Stanley, Jon served as an analyst for Periculum Capital Company for nearly three years, supporting the firm across all service areas. His experience there provide great exposure, training, and practical experience in analyzing financial statements, financial modeling, data analytics, and forecasting economic, industry, and company-specific trends.

Prior to joining Periculum, Jon was a student at the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University, graduating with distinction from the Kelley Business Honors Program and the Hutton Honors College. While in school, he spent a considerable amount of time preparing for a career in financial service through both advanced coursework and service on the Executive Committee of the Investment Banking Workshop.

Jon’s passion for being a financial advisor lies in helping his client’s define and achieve their financial goals, ultimately giving them confidence and financial health. People generally have feelings of stress and anxiety about their financial situation, and it can often be a strain on marriages and other important relationships. Jon takes great pride in helping his clients develop a financial plan that they feel confident in and can rely on, allowing them to focus on other areas of their life.

When it comes to interacting with clients, Jon spends a considerable amount of time educating them so that they deeply understand the strategies he implements for them and how it fits into their financial picture. He also focuses on taking the emotions out of investing, allowing for clearer decision making. Jon also advises on everyday finances, aiding clients on decisions such as whether to purchase or lease a vehicle, or if it makes financial sense to refinance their mortgage. With this guidance from Jon, clients are able to reduce their everyday financial stress.

Outside of work, Jon makes a strong effort to make an impact in his community as well as less fortunate ones. Over the years, he has gone on a mission trip to Haiti, served as a camp counselor for kids who have lost their parents to cancer, mentored and coached IU students in accounting courses, among other efforts.

Jon is happily married to his high school sweetheart, Jessie. They reside in Westfield, Indiana and have two rescue dogs Lucy and Willow. They live close to and are surrounded by family, something that is extremely important to both of them. During their free time, they both enjoy traveling, volunteering and spending time outdoors. Their favorite place to travel to is any of the U.S. National Parks. They both enjoy spending time outdoors, especially walking their dogs or golfing.

Some of these factors include: the Plan’s investment options and the historical investment performance of these options, the Plan’s flexibility and features, the reputation and expertise of the Plan’s investment manager, Plan contribution limits and the federal and state tax benefits associated with an investment in the Plan. Some states, for example, offer favorable tax treatment and other benefits to their residents only if they invest in the state’s own Qualified Tuition Program.
