Source: Barron's.com (May 2024) 2024 Barron's Top 250 Private Wealth Management Teams awarded in 2024. The teams are ranked on a variety of factors, including their size and shape, their regulatory records and credentials of their members, and the resources they have at their disposal to serve their client bases. The rankings are meant as a starting point for clients looking for an advisor—a first-pass vetting that can help investors narrow a search. Every advisor will have his or her own approach to investing, financial planning, and other services. Clients are encouraged to approach a search for an advisor the way they would a search for a doctor—interviewing multiple professionals and getting opinions from multiple third parties. Overview of Wealth Planning Structures
As the value of your company increases, it can become increasingly difficult to effectively redistribute the wealth among family members. One solution to this dilemma involves establishing estate planning structures that permit beneficiaries to profit from the appreciation in company value, while hopefully minimizing the impact of federal estate and gift taxes.

The Public Sales of Privately Held Businesses
When it comes to the public sales of privately held business, there are basic liquidity scenarios: a cash sale, a tax-free stock acquisition (usually by a public company) or an IPO. Each situation involves different considerations and careful deliberation.

    Family-Owned Business Succession Strategies
Raising children who are not only willing but also capable of taking over the family enterprise is an exceptional achievement. However, it can create complex challenges related to your own retirement planning, family dynamics and the operation of your business. In order to manage transfer taxes, it is best to implement planning in advance of significant appreciation in the business.

    Understanding Equity Compensation
Depending on your exit strategy, you may reach a point where the better part of your net worth is held in the form of publicly traded stock and options. You may have to manage different types of incentive compensation, and decide if, how, and when you want to divest some of these assets to diversify your overall holding and pursue your future business, philanthropic and wealth transfer goals.
