    Net Unrealized Appreciation (NUA)
If you have retired or left a company, and you own company stock, you should ask yourself “What is my NUA or Net Unrealized Appreciation?”

What is that? And... Why does it matter?

Net Unrealized Appreciation (NUA) is the difference between the cost basis of company stock and its current fair market value. Why does this matter? Because many investors hold company stock from their former employer after retiring from or leaving a job. They are left with the question…

What should I do with that stock in my old plan?

Traditionally, you would roll the plan assets over to an IRA, including the company stock. That very well might be the best option. However…

Depending on the amount of NUA (net unrealized appreciation), investors may realize an enormous tax benefit if they “distribute” the company stock out of the plan. It could be the difference in paying taxes at the capital gains rate versus the ordinary income rate, which can oftentimes be more than double the amount of tax liability.

We’ve helped several families in approaching and understanding this underutilized tool in their retirement and tax planning.

    Philanthropy
Morgan Stanley offers a variety of charitable solutions for clients. These include:

-Donor-Advised Funds (DAFs): With a DAF clients make irrevocable, nonrefundable contributions of cash or securities. The assets in the DAF can grow free of federal income tax, and the donor can suggest when and which qualified charities should receive grants.

-Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs): Clients who are 70 ½ or older can make annual QCDs up to $105,000 directly from their IRA to a qualifying public charity. The client will not owe any federal income tax on QCDs.

-U.S. Legacy Income Trusts: The trusts provide Donors contributing cash and/or acceptable securities with the opportunity to avoid recognition of capital gains on contributions of appreciated assets. They also provide monthly distributions of tax-advantaged income for life up to ten individual income beneficiaries designated by the donor. Upon passing of the last income beneficiary, the remainder will be distributed to the donor’s qualified public charities.

-Charitable Remainder Trust: this is an irrevocable trust that is often used for income tax planning and is designed to benefit both individuals and charity. The term of the non–charitable interest may be for up to 20 years or the lives of the individuals – typically the donor and spouse. Contributions to the CRT can qualify for a charitable gift or estate tax deduction and the donor typically receives a charitable income tax deduction for lifetime trusts. Meet Tennessee Valley Wealth Management

About Corey Wilson

I have several passions in my life, none more important than my family. I have a beautiful wife and best friend, Becka, and two wonderful daughters, Reese and Reagan.  When we are not traveling for our girls’ athletics teams (FC Alliance Soccer, Basketball, Volleyball, Track… to name a few), much of our time is spent in service to our Church and the community of Knoxville. When we do get a moment of rest, I enjoy traveling, golf, tennis, basketball, CrossFit, scuba diving, skiing, or simply spending time with our Goldendoodle, Huck.

I feel so blessed every day to wake up and serve our clients as a part of the Tennessee Valley Group at Morgan Stanley. Having worked in this industry since 2002, I offer clients a seasoned professional who is competent to assist you in making life changing financial decisions.

Before graduating from East Tennessee State University with a Bachelor of Business Administration focusing on Finance, I spent much of my energy in serving as a part of Young Life, a ministry focused on impacting High School students. Through this experience I found a deeper understanding and appreciation of individuals’ beliefs, values, and motivations. Ultimately, I came to understand just how important relationships are in our lives. That understanding continues to motivate me today.

By combining my knowledge of finance, statistics, investment planning, and a desire to help people live more meaningful lives, I have been able to accomplish many of my professional and personal goals.  My professional credentials include Executive Director-Wealth Management, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ practitioner, and Certified Investment Management Analyst®, a designation obtained through a partnership between Morgan Stanley and the Wharton Business School at The University of Pennsylvania and The University of Chicago Booth School of Business.
