In my free time, I enjoy traveling the world, playing tennis, and walking my dog. I am very involved in my community as a former youth and adult tennis team captain and a former board member of the Country Club of the South Charity Guild. I support charities such as Angel's Rescue and OM Trust.

Persistence Pays Off: Investing for the Long Term
  • Long-term investing requires patience and discipline anchored by a cash-flow-based financial plan that defines success and helps "smooth" the ride through inevitable volatility and drawdowns.
  • We frame risk across three horizons: short-term volatility that reflects uncertainty, intermediate-term drawdowns that test discipline, and long-term shortfall risk--- the probability of missing your goals.
  • Because behavioral factors often serve as material drags on results, avoiding short-termism and market-timing --- and instead saying invested with disciplined, periodic rebalancing --- better preserves the power of compounding.
  • For new cash or windfalls, pre-committing to a time-limited dollar-cost-averaging plan keeps portfolios aligned with long-term targets without timing-based guesswork.
  • Volatility and drawdowns act like the "entry passes" for long term investors. Using predefined rules to rebalance into weakness and, where appropriate, adding capital after periods of weakness can improve long-run outcomes.
  • Thoughtful portfolio construction can boost incremental after-tax value by combining diversification with modest, well-reasoned complexity --- tactical tilts, selective active management, and tax-focused implementation (e.g.., direct indexing) --- in coordination with your Financial Advisor.

8Investors should consider many factors before deciding which 529 plan is appropriate. Some of these factors include: the Plan's investment options and the historical investment performance of these options, the Plan's flexibility and features, the reputation and expertise of the Plan's investment manager, Plan contribution limits and the federal and state tax benefits associated with an investment in the Plan. Some states, for example, offer favorable tax treatment and other benefits to their residents only if they invest in the state's own Qualified Tuition Program. Investors should determine their home state's tax treatment of 529 plans when considering whether to choose an in-state or out-of-state plan. Investors should consult with their tax or legal advisor before investing in any 529 Plan or contact their state tax division for more information. Morgan Stanley Smith Barney LLC does not provide tax and/or legal advice. Investors should review a Program Disclosure Statement, which contains more information on investment options, risk factors, fees and expenses and possible tax consequences.
