For Those In the Spotlight
There's no way around it: high-profile careers are pressure cookers. For professionals in the entertainment and sports industries — as well as C-suite executives at large corporations — not only do you have to perform at the peak of your abilities on the world stage, you also have to navigate a complex financial landscape behind the scenes.
Having played D1 Football at the University of Southern California, I know what that pressure feels like. And I learned firsthand about the relentless drive, leadership, and teamwork needed to achieve excellence when the lights shine bright.
Today, I bring that same gridiron spirit to my work at Morgan Stanley. With over 18 years of experience guiding clients across the entertainment and sports industries and executive landscape, I'll help you master the financial intricacies that accompany your journey.
SPOTLIGHT REALITIES
• YOU EXPERIENCE SUDDEN WEALTH EVENTS — Whether it's a breakthrough project, production credit, or contract bonus, these game-changers demand careful handling. I provide seasoned guidance on wealth preservation, investment diversification, and tax strategies to help you turn your talent into profit.
• YOU HAVE A NARROW WINDOW FOR EARNINGS — I help design tax-efficient strategies to help you keep more of what you earn, now and down the road.
• YOU FACE A LONGER THAN NORMAL RETIREMENT — From managing your investments to optimizing your income streams, I craft comprehensive financial roadmaps to help you make your retirement a long-lasting victory.
YOU SHINE, I STRATEGIZE
• HARD WORK — I bring the same level of dedication to your financial game plan as you bring to your career. Together, we'll put in the work to secure your financial future.
• DISCIPLINE — Financial discipline is the foundation of success. We'll establish smart financial habits to help you achieve your long-term goals.
• LEADERSHIP — Your financial journey requires strong leadership. I'll guide you through the complexities, have the tough conversations, and help you make informed decisions. Always.
Case Studies
A Layered Approach To Tax-Efficiency
Often, the best financial plans are built on layered strategies. This was certainly true for one of our clients, who was juggling a few different financial challenges at once. First, she planned to sell a long-held rental property and faced substantial capital gain taxes. Simultaneously, she was overconcentrated in a single tech stock with an extremely low cost basis. She was also very committed to charitable giving, adding another layer of complexity to the situation.
Collaborating closely with her CPA, I helped create a comprehensive tax-minimization plan that accounted for all her goals and challenges. The centerpiece was the establishment of a donor-advised fund (DAF) funded in kind with her tech stock. This strategic move not only help to shield her from realizing capital gains from the stock sale, but also enabled her to offset the capital gains generated from the rental property sale.
A Smarter Approach To Passive Investing
Wealth comes from what you keep, not what you make. Yet, one client interpreted this as a need to strictly invest in low-risk, buy-and-hold ETF strategies. However, the real key is in fact tax-efficient investing. Utilizing Morgan Stanley's third-party money managers who focus solely on systematic tax loss harvesting, I helped this client go beyond the typical passive investment approach. We created a customized portfolio aimed at maximizing after-tax results, and leveraged strategies ranging from customized tax mandates, capital gains restrictions, and ESG considerations, to specific company and industry exclusions. With our extensive financial wisdom and technology-driven solutions, we simplify the complex, making tax-efficient investing straightforward.
A Corporate Retirement Plan Makeover
A few years ago, an accountant referred us to a second-generation family business of 45 employees that needed a retirement plan makeover. As a Chartered Retirement Planning Specialist®, I looked over the plan, which benefited both the two owners and the employees, and I recognized immediately that the owners were shouldering outsized risk, because they were managing the funds versus using a participant directed setup. So we helped the clients move to this new set-up, which gave each employee more control over their retirement savings. This change not only reduced the risk for the owners, but it also allowed everyone to help manage their money more effectively — a win-win situation for everyone involved.
Empowerment After Divorce
Recently, a divorce attorney reached out to us on behalf of her client, who was feeling overwhelmed by the financial complexity of her divorce. Mostly, this was because she had little knowledge of the family's finances during the marriage, so now she was in urgent need of financial guidance. Over the years, I've helped many clients in similar situations, people who feel unprepared to manage finances after a divorce or the passing of a spouse.
First, we worked with the attorney and client to determine how a settlement would affect the client's lifestyle. Then, through detailed financial modeling, we assessed lump sums, spousal support payments, and the implications of asset division, including IRAs and 401(k)s to help create a financial plan for her going forward. But because true empowerment comes from knowledge, we provided her with step-by-step guidance, ensuring she knew the why behind her strategy. That way, she could help achieve financial confidence and make informed decisions.
