Our Story and Services

At the Rodman-Moore Group, we combine a tailored client approach with the world-class resources of Morgan Stanley to focus on clients’ lifestyle and legacy. We strive to create a plan that satisfies your future needs without sacrificing the quality of your life today or tomorrow, while eliminating as much financial anxiety as possible.

Retirement may comprise half of an adult life, and clients often don’t have a well-defined view of their golden years. Many aren’t prepared for the freedom and challenges it brings. So, beyond providing financial guidance, we help clients visualize their retirement—and understand the opportunities available— so they can better imagine how they want to spend the rest of their lives. By doing so, we’re trying to change the concept of what traditional retirement planning encompasses.

Our Financial Advisors possesses an in-depth knowledge of financial planning, estate planning and capital markets. Our team includes a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER® who's met rigorous education and training standards and has demonstrated a competency in comprehensive financial planning. Each plan we develop is different because each client is different. Simply put, we feel generic financial planning and asset allocation models aren’t in the best interests of our clients.

Our group works with a broad range of clients, including corporate professionals, civil service workers, small business owners, multi-generational families and others. Many have been clients for decades. Most clients are either approaching retirement or already retired; we encourage prospective clients to consider retirement planning sooner than later. To provide an ideal level of personalized, attentive service, we limit the size of our clientele.

We invite you to learn more about what our group offers and welcome the opportunity to have a conversation with you.

Making a Difference in Your Life
    Icon Image
    1. Get to Know You

When we meet initially, we want to get to know you as an individual. While you may share characteristics of other clients, you're unique in your own way.

    Icon Image
    2. Look at the Big Picture

This means understanding where you've been in the past, and how you've evolved into where you're at now. It includes exploring your current goals, present lifestyle and future aspirations, as well as openly discussing any underlying worries or complications you might have. We'll encourage you to look at the big picture of your life—not just the next 12 months.

    Icon Image
    3. Start Developing Your Plan

We'll also review important financial information, such as your portfolio, current budget, spending patterns, savings rates and debt management. We'll use this information along with the other insights we've learned to start developing your plan.

    Icon Image
    4. Trust Matters to Us

Having your trust matters to us. We want you to feel comfortable with our team—and confident about your plan. So, we encourage you to ask questions and seek clarity. We'll respond in an understandable, detailed manner until you feel satisfied. After all, we're working for you.

FINANCIAL PLANNING

Our services revolve around the mantra of lifestyle and legacy.

For pre-retirees or those in the "accumulation" phase of their lives, we provide financial planning, portfolio management and other types of strategic guidance to assist you with balancing your current lifestyle with future needs. We focus on longer-term investment trends, and offer a macro perspective about how these trends have evolved and why short-term market volatility is normal. Importantly, we look to ensure the financial decisions you make today give you greater flexibility in the future—often a key to lasting success.

For retirees or those close to retirement in the "distribution" phase, we'll design a road map for the next phase of your lives, including legacy planning. We'll transition your current portfolio to allow it to generate predictable income over market cycles and be in the position to take advantage of longer-term market volatility.
No matter if you're in the accumulation or distribution phase, we can coordinate with your other trusted advisors—such as your estate attorney or CPA—to assess if your estate and tax planning align with your goals, and to help prevent any leakage of information between your advisors.

During the planning process, we'll prompt you to envision how to employ the assets you worked your entire life to accumulate. Perhaps you'll use it to travel, buy a vacation home, continue your education, become a philanthropist, provide for future generations, start a small business, develop new hobbies or engage in other endeavors. We feel there are more meaningful ways to spend your golden years than checking your account balances every day, and we want to prepare you as well as we can for an enjoyable, rewarding retirement.

After we design your plan, we'll present our ideas, make the necessary adjustments and then begin the implementation process. A critical component we provide is ongoing plan monitoring. Modifications to your plan may be needed from time to time—based on life changes, market situations, time horizons or new goals—to help keep it on track.
These follow-up adjustments can be crucial to your plan's success—sometimes even more important than the original plan. As part of the design process, we strive to build in as much flexibility as possible so clients have the opportunity to make changes as necessary.

Work Towards Your Future With A Goals Based Plan

Investment Philosophy

Our investment philosophy is client-based, and our approach is goal-based.

We help build plans designed to address the current needs of clients, along with any future or legacy-based objectives they may have. Our primary aspiration is to design an investment approach that's tailored to your needs, goals and risk tolerance.

We encourage clients to focus on the horizon instead of things they can't control—such as the day-to-day movements of the market. Our understanding of market cycles helps us construct plans that can work with short-term volatility within portfolios while providing a consistent income stream.

Most investment models are designed for various levels of risk tolerance. Our approach for retirement is designed around a tailored cash-flow model that's custom made for each client's income needs. We typically begin this process by looking at all potential income sources in retirement—such as payments from Social Security, annuities, pensions, rentals, etc. We'll then consider your retirement lifestyle and project your annual expenses, as well as craft an asset allocation model and screen your investments. The difference between the two shows us how much money your investment portfolio will need to generate each year to account for this deficit.

Based on this information, we'll design the allocation to help meet your current income needs, and provide opportunities for future growth. Taking this approach serves a variety of objectives. It bridges the gap between your annual income and expenses. It can provide clarity about how much cash flow you'll generate annually going forward—without having to worry about short-term market fluctuations. And it potentially presents the option to sell some of your stock holdings at advantageous times—instead of being forced to liquidate them during unfavorable markets in order to pay your expenses.

Asset Allocation does not assure a profit or protect against loss in declining financial markets.

Meet Rodman-Moore Group

About J. Howard Rodman, Jr.

Howard Rodman is a First Vice President, Wealth Management, Financial Advisor, Senior Portfolio Manager at Morgan Stanley.

Since 1982, Howard has provided comprehensive financial planning for high-net-worth individuals, qualified retirement accounts and foundations. This includes asset allocation, portfolio management, estate planning strategies , business continuation planning and divorce financial planning. At Morgan Stanley, he primarily focuses on retirement income planning.

Howard began his lengthy career at Dean Witter (now Morgan Stanley) and has worked for several leading financial firms. He returned to Morgan Stanley in 2008 because the firm gives Financial Advisors the flexibility to work with clients in a manner that’s appropriate for each individual.

Howard became a Financial Advisor because he enjoys assisting others—especially managing unique or challenging situations for clients. He relies on his extensive experience which gives him an understanding of how to navigate issues that could undermine a client’s financial success. Howard’s greatest satisfaction comes from structuring plans that reduce a client’s financial anxiety and helps allow them to focus on their lives instead of their finances.

He graduated from Hampden-Sydney College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics in 1982. Howard’s professional accreditations include being a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™, Certified Divorce Financial Analyst®, and Accredited Estate Planner, National Association of Estate Planners and Councils.

Highly active in the community, Howard has supported numerous local organizations, including currently being a Board of Director for the Norfolk SPCA Adoption Center. His passion for charitable work was evident when he designed and led PaineWebber’s Philanthropic Services Group from 1996-1999.

Born in Portsmouth, Virginia, Howard lives with his wife in Virginia Beach. His hobbies have included photography, woodturning, cooking, golf, scuba diving and flying.

About JT Moore

JT Moore is a Financial Advisor at Morgan Stanley. With his Financial Planning Specialist designation, he focuses on taking a holistic view of a client’s financial picture, and assists them with managing their wealth, establishing goals and managing risks.

JT became a Financial Advisor because he enjoys making a positive impact on the lives of others—including helping clients solve financial challenges that often create worry, and finding answers to questions they may not even realize they have.

An accomplished professional with a diverse background, JT spent eight years working with the U.S. Navy. As a Contracting Officer, he initially supported shipbuilding/ship repair commands, and later Naval Special Warfare Commands. Prior to federal service work, he worked in the Clerk’s Office Staff of the Virginia House of Delegates.

These experiences enabled JT to develop one of his core strengths. Namely, being a process-oriented individual who’s adept at navigating heavily regulated, complex spaces with repeatable success—which aligns well with his current role as a Financial Advisor.

JT graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2013 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and U.S. foreign policy. He furthered his education by receiving an MBA Essentials professional certificate from the University of Illinois Gies College Of Business in 2020.

A Virginia Beach native, JT now lives in Norfolk with his wife, Sydney, and their black Labrador retriever, Hank. He continues his commitment to serving our country as a U.S. Navy Reserve Supply Corps Officer and by giving his time to the Hampton Roads Chapter of the Navy Supply Corps Foundation.

JT is a music lover who plays a wide range of musical instruments, including guitar, piano and brass. He loves to travel, and enjoys a spectrum of recreational activities, such as running, cycling, golf, surfing, scuba diving, soccer, disc golf, hiking and camping.

8Investors should consider many factors before deciding which 529 plan is appropriate. Some of these factors include: the Plan’s investment options and the historical investment performance of these options, the Plan’s flexibility and features, the reputation and expertise of the Plan’s investment manager, Plan contribution limits and the federal and state tax benefits associated with an investment in the Plan. Some states, for example, offer favorable tax treatment and other benefits to their residents only if they invest in the state’s own Qualified Tuition Program. Investors should determine their home state’s tax treatment of 529 plans when considering whether to choose an in-state or out-of-state plan. Investors should consult with their tax or legal advisor before investing in any 529 Plan or contact their state tax division for more information. Morgan Stanley Smith Barney LLC does not provide tax and/or legal advice. Investors should review a Program Disclosure Statement, which contains more information on investment options, risk factors, fees and expenses and possible tax consequences.
