Catherine A. Eklund Mares

As a Vice President and Portfolio Manager at Morgan Stanley, my mission is to enrich the lives of others. I draw on my 30 years of experience in the financial services industry to care for my clients in all the phases of their lives. I help clients to achieve their dreams as well as prepare them for the potential “what ifs” and consider the legacy they want to leave behind.

As a Portfolio Manager, I custom tailor portfolios to fit my clients’ needs. This Morgan Stanley designation is bestowed upon a select group of financial advisors who can offer portfolio management services directly to their clients.

I began my career as a teller in the banking industry in Virginia, where I quickly rose to the position of Regional Manager. I oversaw the operations of seventeen banking centers while studying economics and finance at the University of Virginia. I moved to Palm Springs in the 1980s, counseling clients as a registered financial advisor at Banc of America Investments before joining Morgan Stanley in 2009. I am a 2015, 2016 & 2017 recipient of the Five Star Wealth Management Award and I received the Distinguished Woman’s Award in 2003 from Northwood University.

I am a passionate advocate for education, mental health and children's issues. Outside of work, I follow my passions in music, art and history. When I'm not relaxing with Victoria, my King Charles Spaniel, I love to travel with my many friends around the world.

That’s why my work with you centers on creating the freedom, joy and abundance necessary for the wellbeing of you and those you love. I pride myself on knowing you, your dreams and goals, as well as your financial concerns and the issues that keep you up at night. For me, the most important questions are: What do you need your money to do for you? What has meaning for you and how can I help you enrich your life?

I also pride myself on working seamlessly with your accountants, attorneys and other advisors to provide perspective and solve problems that may seem unusual or unique.  Some of the areas where I collaborate with outside advisors include minimizing tax obligations, ensuring portfolio alignment with estate plans, and providing key investment advice during times of transition.

In terms of my own educational achievements, I am delighted to have been the 2003 recipient of Northwood University’s Distinguished Woman Award. This award is given annually to recognize the enormous contribution women make to communities, businesses, nonprofit organizations, and public and private sector services worldwide. The honorees represent the values that Northwood espouses to its students: commitment to free enterprise, partnership of arts and business, and management in a global society.

Helping others is extremely important to me. Growing up in the foster care system, I understand what it means to live as a family in need. Today, I give motivational speeches and actively support causes in the United States and abroad that enhance children and families’ abilities to cope with health, mental health and abuse problems. 

Closer to home, some of the poorest people in the United States live on the edges of the beautiful desert community where I live. Children and families sleep in fields, alongside irrigation ditches or on swatches of cardboard in the dirt. As a member of the community where they live, I feel a profound responsibility to do what I can to help alleviate the squalid conditions of their lives.
I am also a strong supporter of the arts. I believe the arts promote true prosperity, strengthen the economy, spark creativity and innovation and have social impact.  Communities that invest in the arts reap the additional benefits of jobs, economic growth, and a quality of life that positions those communities to compete in our 21st century creative economy.
