Our Story

The world in which we live and operate is changing at an unprecedented pace. Your financial advisory and consulting firm must be able to adapt quickly to the evolving needs of your family or organization, providing fresh ideas and highly personalized solutions that meet your strategic objectives. Graystone Consulting Chicago’s core principles are simple: putting clients first, leading with exceptional ideas, doing the right thing, and giving back. Prioritizing these principles in everything we do has enabled us to help families and institutions navigate countless iterations of complex financial situations. Our personalized dedication to clients, the breadth of our diverse, multidisciplined team, and our ability to serve as a hub for our clients' financial lives sets us apart.

With over 125 years of combined industry experience, and a partnership that has spanned 30 years, the Graystone team led by Jim Whitney, Michael Sakach, Mary DiChristofano, and Brian Birnbaum, brings an unparalleled level of diversity and sophistication rivaled by few in the Private Wealth Management space.

As one of the most highly accredited teams in the Midwest, these four advisors are supported by ten professionals, with areas of focus ranging from financial analysis to wealth planning. With varying degrees of distinction, including Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ designations, the team is divided into sub-teams, with at least two advisors, a financial officer, and an analyst per client relationship.

Prior to Graystone, Jim, Michael, and Mary founded Frye Louis Capital Management, Inc., the first multi-family office business in the Midwest. As a testament to their success, Credit Suisse entered the family wealth management market and acquired the group in 2001 where they remained until joining Morgan Stanley as a Graystone Consulting team in 2016.

Under the Graystone umbrella, the group maintains discretionary flexibility over investment products not typically available to traditional wealth advisory firms. Driven by strong relationships with leading asset managers and a thorough approach to research, the team has sourced and developed opportunities to create bespoke solutions for clients across the entire investable landscape.

5Borrowing against securities may not be appropriate for everyone. You should be aware that there are risks associated with a securities based loan, including possible maintenance calls on short notice, and that market conditions can magnify any potential for loss. For details please see the important disclosures below.

Securities based loans are provided by Morgan Stanley Smith Barney LLC, Morgan Stanley Private Bank, National Association or Morgan Stanley Bank, N.A, as applicable.

Important Risk Information for Securities Based Lending: You need to understand that: (1) Sufficient collateral must be maintained to support your loan(s) and to take future advances; (2) You may have to deposit additional cash or eligible securities on short notice; (3) Some or all of your securities may be sold without prior notice in order to maintain account equity at required maintenance levels. You will not be entitled to choose the securities that will be sold. These actions may interrupt your long-term investment strategy and may result in adverse tax consequences or in additional fees being assessed; (4) Morgan Stanley Bank, N.A., Morgan Stanley Private Bank, National Association or Morgan Stanley Smith Barney LLC (collectively referred to as “Morgan Stanley”) reserves the right not to fund any advance request due to insufficient collateral or for any other reason except for any portion of a securities based loan that is identified as a committed facility; (5) Morgan Stanley reserves the right to increase your collateral maintenance requirements at any time without notice; and (6) Morgan Stanley reserves the right to call securities based loans at any time and for any reason.

With the exception of a margin loan, the proceeds from securities based loan products may not be used to purchase, trade, or carry margin stock (or securities, with respect to Express CreditLine); repay margin debt that was used to purchase, trade or carry margin stock (or securities, with respect to Express CreditLine); and cannot be deposited into a Morgan Stanley Smith Barney LLC or other brokerage account.

To be eligible for a securities based loan, a client must have a brokerage account at Morgan Stanley Smith Barney LLC that contains eligible securities, which shall serve as collateral for the securities based loan.

7Investing in the market entails the risk of market volatility. The value of all types of investments may increase or decrease over varying time periods. The returns on a portfolio consisting primarily of sustainable or impact investments may be lower or higher than a portfolio that is more diversified or where decisions are based solely on investment considerations. Because sustainability and impact criteria exclude some investments, investors may not be able to take advantage of the same opportunities or market trends as investors that do not use such criteria.
