About our name
  • The Richmond area is rich in history and has served an important role in commerce and westward expansion of our country via canals and railroads. Westham is located on the fall line of James River. To the west, river travel provides safe passage but at Westham and for several miles down-stream to the east, it is marked with dangers of rapids and difficult navigation. Westham began as an unincorporated town just west of Richmond and was designated by the Continental Congress to be an iron production foundry in the Revolutionary War. During the war, Richmond came under attack and British general Benedict Arnold burned down the city, including the Westham foundry. After the war, Richmond recovered and blossomed into a growing city.
  • For us, the name Westham symbolizes the coming together of people and resources to invest in and develop a plan to build a better future. We see the importance of this today as we provide our clients experience and advice, guiding them through the markets and life’s twists and turns as they seek to reach their goal of a secure future.

Our Clients

Our clients are individuals, families, and business owners across the United States who value the importance of professional advice. Decades of experience have taught us that family and relationships matter the most - and our comprehensive financial planning approach and custom investment strategies reflect that.  We take the time to find out what’s important to you – the “why” behind what drives you. And then we look at what do you want to do that will require money – either now or down the road?
Let’s face it – the joy and memories of moments that mean the most to us have little to do with money.
Moments such as:
-Births and Adoptions
-Weddings and marriages
-Education and graduations
-Starting your new business
-Quality time with family and friends
-Favorite hobbies
-Travel and trips of a lifetime
But let’s be honest – how many of the things that mean the most to you are easier when you have the money to put into them?
-A grand wedding for your child and their spouse, or helping them purchase their first home…
-Fewer (or even no) school loans, so your children or grandchildren can get a great education and start their grown-up lives debt free…
-Seed money for turning your passion into a business, which could then eventually give you more time with your family and something to pass down to future generations...
-Better family vacations … a better retirement … travel … money to put into the pastimes you love…
Working with you
When you’re ready to learn ways to potentially preserve and grow your financial assets with an experienced team who understand exactly what your financial success means to you and your loved ones, consider The Westham Group at Morgan Stanley.

Meet The Westham Group

About Jason Habel

As a Financial Advisor, Portfolio Manager, Certified Financial Planner and founding member of The Westham Group at Morgan Stanley, Jason Habel has been with Morgan Stanley for 22 years. Helping clients gain a solid financial foundation for themselves and their families is something Jason truly enjoys.

Jason’s passion for the financial services industry is founded upon the uniqueness of each client relationship and helping clients become engaged in the financial planning process. Jason understands that managing one’s finances can be immensely challenging as individuals and families face time constraints such as long work hours, taking care of children and helping aging parents. A byproduct of our busy lives is that investors often do not monitor and update their plan as their lives change or have defined guidelines for what to do during the market’s ups and downs and need professional risk management and investment experience. By utilizing advanced planning strategies and industry leading technology, Jason works closely with his clients to overcome challenges and create opportunities which help clients meet their goals and shape their future. Whether you know where you stand or just want a fresh perspective on your investments and your situation, Jason will thoroughly evaluate where you are — and if where you are today will get you where you want to be tomorrow.

Jason graduated from Virginia Tech’s Pamplin College of Business in 2000 and joined Morgan Stanley in 2001. It was there that he met Christina and they married in 2008. They live in Powhatan, a rural community outside of Richmond and have three children who provide a daily dose of joy and laughter, Katelyn (13), William (11) and Ainsley (9). Together, they enjoy recreational basketball, hikes in the outdoors, Virginia Tech football games, and taking daytrips across Virginia to state parks, historical sites, and small towns that are off the map. Visiting National Parks across the U.S. is a favorite vacation activity and Jason has visited 20 such parks with his favorite being Yosemite in California which was beloved my naturalist John Muir for whom Jason's middle name derived. When not outdoors, Jason enjoys reading biographies, U.S. and world history. Jason and Christina are grateful for their faith, close friendships and community which are a large part of their daily lives.

Volunteering and giving back to the Richmond community is something that is very important to Jason. From 2012 – 2018 he served as the Scholarship Committee Co-Chairman for The Richmond Chapter of Virginia Tech Alumni, from 2019 - 2020 he served as President for the 15,000 member chapter and is very active with their community service events including now serving on the Richmond Virginia Tech Chapter Alumni Board as Past President and Recording Secretary. Jason also served many years as the Richmond Morgan Stanley liaison for their commitment to support FeedMore Inc. in Richmond, helping to coordinate service opportunities and secure grants for FeedMore from The Morgan Stanley Foundation, which is part of the firm’s engagement to support Feeding America. Jason and Christina are enthusiastic supporters of Samaritan's Purse which provides worldwide disaster relief as well as food and medical supplies for refugees and impoverished countries.

1Investors should consider many factors before deciding which 529 plan is appropriate. Some of these factors include: the Plan's investment options and the historical investment performance of these options, the Plan's flexibility and features, the reputation and expertise of the Plan's investment manager, Plan contribution limits and the federal and state tax benefits associated with an investment in the Plan. Some states, for example, offer favorable tax treatment and other benefits to their residents only if they invest in the state's own Qualified Tuition Program. Investors should determine their home state's tax treatment of 529 plans when considering whether to choose an in-state or out-of-state plan. Investors should consult with their tax or legal advisor before investing in any 529 Plan or contact their state tax division for more information. Morgan Stanley Smith Barney LLC does not provide tax and/or legal advice.
