Family Wealth Director

Family Wealth Directors (FWD) is a title earned, not given, to Morgan Stanley advisors who have demonstrated experience and knowledge working with Ultra-High-Net-Worth families and Business Owners or the firm . John Porter is no exception to this. About 5% of Financial Advisors have obtained the Family Wealth Director designation as of December 2023. With 27 years of experience, John leads the Wassaw Wealth Management Group at Morgan Stanley (a team he founded in 2008) in helping families and business owners protect, grow, and manage their wealth.

Family Wealth Directors have access to specialized teams, products, and training within Morgan Stanley. It is very common for a Family Wealth Director to partner with a client’s estate planning and accounting team along with the Morgan Stanley Family Office Resource team. Together, they ensure the entirety of a client’s life goals are executed to the fullest extent.

Please see the attached overview of our Family Wealth Director Capabilities in conjunction with our Family Office Resources:
Have You Given Any Thoughts To Estate Planning?
Many of our clients have considered what they would like to happen to their assets when they pass away, but it's a subject that some of us naturally hesitate to explore. However, careful consideration of this matter can help simplify the eventual transition of your wealth. Is a simple will sufficient, or might a more comprehensive estate plan be the best course for your unique situation?

Consider the following key questions:

Do you have significant assets outside of your IRA and primary residence?
Would you like a set of instructions to be followed if you become incapacitated?
Are you interested on effectively managing your assets during your lifetime while ensuring benefits for your loved ones, especially children with special needs?
Have you given thought to the most tax-efficient strategies for transferring your wealth?

While Morgan Stanley does not provide direct estate planning or tax advice, we believe that seeking professional counsel in these areas can significantly bolster your overall financial plan. Regular reviews and updates of your plan are essential.

We encourage you to call us today to discuss your unique situation. Let's explore together how we can help create a personalized plan that aligns with your goals and eases the eventual transition of your assets.

About Sam Kerner

When I was twelve years old, I walked my piggy bank into a wealth management office in Honolulu, Hawaii where I was born and raised. I made my first investment that day and never looked back. Since then, I’ve had a career in financial services spanning two and a half decades. After entering the industry as a Financial Advisor, I spent the next 20 years as an institutional investor making asset management decisions and helping manage multi-billion-dollar portfolios.

I was recruited by Morgan Stanley to combine my extensive financial background with my personal desire to work with individual investors. As a Financial Advisor, I help each client identify their unique financial goals and find solutions aimed at achieving them.

I hold the Chartered Financial Analyst® (CFA®), Alternatives Investments Director designation, and a B.A. from Tufts University where I earned All-American Honorable Mention honors on the Sailing Team. I went on to win the U.S. Nationals, the Silver Medal at the Pan Am Games and wage two Olympic Sailing campaigns as the top-ranked sailor on the U.S. Sailing Team. It was during this time, tackling shifting winds and currents, that I first learned to manage risks and opportunities in making headway towards my goals. Backed by Morgan Stanley, the largest wealth manager in the country, I bring that same level of expertise, passion, and commitment to helping each of my clients pursue their dreams and achieve their own financial goals.
