Retirement Strategy
Retirement planning means more than providing you with investment advice. It means helping you maintain the financial independence you’ve worked your entire life to achieve. It also means striving to ensure you have the means to pursue what’s most important to you. And, it means understanding you as someone whose unique goals, values and circumstances help determine the strategies we recommend on your behalf.

401(k) Rollover
Typically, a retirement plan participant leaving an employer has the following four options (and may engage in a combination of these options depending on their employment status, age and the availability of the particular option):

1. Cash out the account value and take a lump sum distribution from the current plan subject to mandatory 20% withholding, as well as potential taxes and 10% penalty
OR to continue tax deferred growth and:
2. Leave the assets in the former employer’s plan (if permitted)
3. Rollover the retirement savings into the new employer’s qualified plan, if one is available and rollovers are permitted
4. Rollover the retirement savings into an IRA

Other factors in making a rollover decision- include (among other things) the differences in: (1) Investment Options, (2) Fees and Expenses, (3) Services, (4) Penalty-Free Withdrawals, (5) Creditor Protection in Bankruptcy and from Legal Judgments, (6) Required Minimum Distributions or “RMDs”, and (7) the Tax Treatment of Employer Stock.

About Sarah E Stratton

Sarah brings a lot of experience to her role as a wealth management professional. Being a seasoned advisor for over 35 years, Sarah is dedicated to helping people understand their finances and plan while building a deep trust with them. There was one simple goal for Sarah - to help people be in control of their finances so that they would be able to do the things they wanted to do in life. People are intimidated by finance and money. It is rarely talked about when people are growing up and even less when couples are planning to marry/ have a family, facing a loved one's death, etc. Sarah wanted to be that person that they could trust to talk with, advise and take care of the implementation of our decisions together

Prior to Morgan Stanley, Sarah started her career at Merrill Lynch. She worked full time while raising 5 children and made the move from Merrill Lynch to PaineWebber in 1992. Sarah decided to make the move with her team to Morgan Stanley in 2017 to be with a company with more resources available to her clients and who valued a female Mother/Daughter team.

Sarah believes that balance is vital to a happy life. Outside of the office, she looks to spend quality time with her family. When Sarah has some free time, she enjoys hiking, yoga, and working in the yard with her husband Paul.

2Investors should consider many factors before deciding which 529 plan is appropriate. Some of these factors include: the Plan’s investment options and the historical investment performance of these options, the Plan’s flexibility and features, the reputation and expertise of the Plan’s investment manager, Plan contribution limits and the federal and state tax benefits associated with an investment in the Plan. Some states, for example, offer favorable tax treatment and other benefits to their residents only if they invest in the state’s own Qualified Tuition Program. Investors should determine their home state’s tax treatment of 529 plans when considering whether to choose an in-state or out-of-state plan. Investors should consult with their tax or legal advisor before investing in any 529 Plan or contact their state tax division for more information. Morgan Stanley Smith Barney LLC does not provide tax and/or legal advice. Investors should review a Program Disclosure Statement, which contains more information on investment options, risk factors, fees and expenses and possible tax consequences.

11An investment in an exchange-traded fund (ETF) involves risks similar to those of investing in a broadly based portfolio of equity securities traded on exchange in the relevant securities market, such as market fluctuations caused by such factors as economic and political developments, changes in interest rates and perceived trends in stock prices. The investment return and principal value of ETF investments will fluctuate, so that an investor’s ETF shares, if or when sold, may be worth more or less than the original cost.

Investors should carefully consider the investment objectives, risks, charges and expenses of an exchange-traded fund (ETF) before investing. The prospectus contains this and other information about the ETF. To obtain a prospectus, contact your Financial Advisor or visit the ETF company’s website. Please read the prospectus carefully before investing.
