Retirement FAQs

1. How much money will I need to retire?

Your target should reflect your expected spending, retirement income, healthcare costs, taxes, inflation and how long your savings may need to last. Rather than relying on a universal rule, compare your projected expenses with Social Security, pensions and income your investments may reasonably provide. Need guidance? Connect with us now.

2. How will I know when I can afford to retire?

You may be financially ready when your reliable income and savings can support your lifestyle under a range of market, inflation and longevity scenarios. Before choosing a date, test how retiring earlier or later would affect your savings, Social Security, employer benefits and healthcare coverage. How to test this? Let us build you a customized retirement plan.

3. When should I begin taking Social Security?

You can generally begin retirement benefits at age 62, but starting before your full retirement age permanently reduces your monthly benefit, while delaying can increase it until age 70.2 The right choice depends on your health, life expectancy, other income, marital situation and need for immediate cash flow. Ask us for a Social Security analysis.

4. How will I pay for healthcare in retirement?

Medicare eligibility generally begins around age 65, with an initial enrollment period that starts three months before the month you turn 65 and ends three months afterward. Your plan should also budget for premiums, deductibles, prescription drugs and services that Medicare may not cover. We have health insurance licenses, and can explain options.

5. How much can I safely withdraw each year?

There is no single withdrawal percentage that works for everyone because the appropriate amount depends on your spending, investment mix, taxes, age and market conditions. A flexible strategy that is reviewed regularly can help you reduce withdrawals after difficult markets and adjust as your needs change. Connect to learn more about our dynamic retirement income strategies.

6. Will my retirement income be taxed?

Withdrawals from traditional retirement accounts and many pension payments are generally taxable, while qualified Roth distributions and certain after-tax amounts may be tax-free. A tax-aware withdrawal plan can help coordinate income from taxable, tax-deferred and Roth accounts. We can help.

7. Should I save in a traditional or Roth retirement account?

Traditional contributions may provide a tax benefit today, but taxable withdrawals are generally included in income later, while Roth contributions are made with after-tax dollars and qualified withdrawals are tax-free. Reach out for a custom combination strategy to create more flexibility when managing taxes in retirement.

8. What are required minimum distributions?

Required minimum distributions are annual withdrawals that generally begin at age 73 for traditional IRAs and many employer-sponsored retirement accounts. Roth IRAs and designated Roth workplace accounts generally do not require distributions while the original owner is alive, although beneficiaries have separate rules. We have over 35 years as retirement specialists.

9. Should I plan for long-term care expenses?

Yes, because Medicare and most health insurance generally do not cover non-medical long-term care, such as ongoing assistance with bathing, dressing or other daily activities. Consider where you would want to receive care and whether savings, insurance, family support or other resources would fund it. Call us for a conversation.

10. How can I protect my spouse and family if something happens to me?

Review your retirement-account beneficiaries after major life events because retirement benefits are generally paid to the beneficiary named under the plan's procedures. Coordinate those designations with your will, powers of attorney, healthcare directives, insurance and broader estate plan. Each family situation is unique so connect now to begin the conversation.

Wealth Management FAQ

1. What does wealth management actually include?

Wealth management is about bringing your investments, taxes, estate plan, insurance needs, charitable goals and major financial decisions into one coordinated strategy. The real value is not having a collection of disconnected accounts and documents, but having each part of your financial life working toward the same priorities.

2. How do I know whether my investment strategy is right for me?

A good investment strategy should reflect what your money needs to accomplish, when you may need it and how much uncertainty you can comfortably accept along the way. If your portfolio cannot be clearly connected to your goals, it may be an assortment of investments rather than a true strategy.

3. How much investment risk should I be taking?

The right amount of risk is not simply the amount you are emotionally willing to tolerate when markets are calm; it is the amount your financial plan can reasonably absorb when markets are not. We look at your goals, timeline, liquidity needs and financial flexibility to determine which risks may be worth taking and which ones may be unnecessary.

4. What should I do when the market becomes volatile?

Market volatility is usually a reason to review your plan, not abandon it. Before making a change, it helps to ask whether something meaningful has changed in your life or whether the headlines have simply made the plan feel temporarily uncomfortable.

5. Am I too heavily invested in one company, industry or type of asset?

Concentrated investments can build significant wealth, but they can also allow one company or sector to have too much influence over your financial future. Diversifying does not require giving up everything that has worked; it means deciding how much dependence on any one investment is appropriate going forward.

6. How can I make my investment portfolio more tax-conscious?

A tax-conscious strategy considers not only what you own, but also which accounts hold each investment, when gains or losses are recognized and how investment decisions interact with your broader tax picture. The goal is not to avoid every tax, since doing so can lead to poor investment decisions, but to make sure taxes are considered before rather than after action is taken.

7. How much of my wealth should remain in cash?

Cash should provide flexibility for upcoming expenses, unexpected events and opportunities without forcing you to sell investments at an inconvenient time. Holding too little can create stress, while holding too much for too long may quietly reduce your purchasing power and limit the growth potential of your overall strategy.

8. How does my estate plan fit into wealth management?

An estate plan explains where assets should go, while wealth management helps make sure your accounts, ownership arrangements and beneficiary designations are aligned with those wishes. Even a well-written legal document can produce unintended results when account registrations or beneficiary instructions tell a different story.

9. How can I be more intentional about charitable giving?

Thoughtful charitable planning begins with what you want your giving to accomplish and then considers which assets and giving methods may best support that purpose. The most meaningful strategy is rarely just about writing a check; it can also involve timing, family participation and creating a lasting connection between your wealth and your values.

10. How do I know whether I am receiving meaningful value from my financial advisor?

The relationship should give you more than investment performance reports; it should provide clarity, coordination and confidence when important financial decisions arise. You should understand what services you receive, what you pay, how recommendations support your goals and whether your advisor is helping you see issues and opportunities you might otherwise miss.

Live & Virtual workshops

We believe ongoing financial education leads to a better understanding of how to manage your assets and preserve your wealth. To that end, throughout the year we host a number of programs that focus on all aspects of your financial life, including a monthly webinar dedicated to female investors.

In addition to in-person programs, we offer webinars and conference calls for our clients and their guests. We create these opportunities so we - and our featured speakers - can share insights and new perspectives on topics that may impact your financial plan and investment portfolio.

4) Q4 2025 Securities Based Lending McLagan Survey – 6 Firm Report. Based on both Non-Purpose Lending and total SBL balances. Borrowing against securities may not be appropriate for everyone. Clients must be aware that there are risks associated with a securities based loan, including possible maintenance calls on short notice, and that market conditions can magnify any potential for loss.

Not all products, tools, platforms, and services referenced are available to all clients. Please speak with your Financial Advisor for eligibility criteria.

Investing in securities involves risk, including possible loss of principal. Diversification does not guarantee a profit or protect against loss in a declining financial market.

Morgan Stanley Smith Barney LLC does not accept appointments nor will it act as a trustee but it will provide access to trust services through an appropriate third-party corporate trustee.

Alternative investments are often speculative and include a high degree of risk. Investors can lose all or a substantial amount of their investment. They may be highly illiquid, can engage in leverage, short-selling and other speculative practices that may increase volatility and the risk of loss, and may be subject to large investment minimums and initial lock-ups. They may involve complex tax structures, tax inefficient investing and delays in distributing important tax information. They may have higher fees and expenses that traditional investments, and such fees and expenses can lower the returns achieved by investors.
