Our Financial Planning Process

"A goal without a plan is just a wish" - Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
At The Sierra View Group at Morgan Stanley, financial planning is the cornerstone of how we help you make confident decisions, connecting what matters most to you with a clear, coordinated strategy to pursue it. We take time to understand your priorities, quantify opportunities and trade-offs, and translate complexity into a practical roadmap you can act on. As your life evolves, your plan evolves with you; helping you stay aligned, accountable, and on track toward your goals.

    Icon Image
    Step 1: Discovery

We start by getting to know you—your goals, priorities, family situation, lifestyle, and values. We also review the resources you have today and what you expect to accumulate over time, so we can build a clear picture of your goals and the resources available to help achieve them.

    Icon Image
    Step 2: Build & Analyze

Using the information we gather, we assess your current financial picture and develop a personalized financial plan. We evaluate key assumptions, identify potential gaps, and stress-test the plan for risks—so you can make informed decisions with greater confidence.

    Icon Image
    Step 3: Present & Strategize

We meet to review your plan in detail, discuss trade-offs, and walk through any recommendations. Together, we prioritize next steps and align on a strategy after considering relevant factors such as costs, potential outcomes, risks, and alternative options.

    Icon Image
    Step 4: Implement & Invest

Once we agree on the strategy, we put the plan into action. This may include coordinating account actions and implementing an investment approach aligned to your goals, time horizon, and risk tolerance for assets we manage.

    Icon Image
Step 5: Ongoing Tracking & Reviews

Financial planning isn't one-and-done. We monitor progress over time and schedule regular reviews so your plan can evolve as your life changes—helping you stay on track toward your goals.

Personalized Investment Solutions

After your financial plan is complete, we then derive personalized investment recommendations based on your needs, goals, and risk tolerance utilizing Morgan Stanleys robust suite of investment solutions.

The Balancing Act

How we help you navigate competing priorities at different stages of life:

As success grows, financial decisions become increasingly interconnected – touching your career, family, lifestyle, retirement goals, and long-term legacy. Our approach begins with financial planning – helping you define what wealth is meant to accomplish – then build an integrated strategy to support every stage of life.

Build > Protect > Transition > Transfer

Our team purposefully spans different generations and advisory perspectives so we can guide not only today's decision makers, but the next generation as they step into greater responsibility.

Successful families often find themselves balancing competing priorities:

  • Career and family
  • Children and aging parents
  • Short-term needs and long-term goals
  • Opportunity and responsibility

Financial decisions in this environment are rarely isolated. They affect relationships, long-term goals, and the legacy you hope to leave.

Our planning-led approach helps bring clarity to those trade-offs. Through ongoing communication and disciplined strategy, we help ensure your financial decisions remain aligned with what matters most to you.

    Icon Image
    Pre-Retirees

    The Challenge
Retirement isn't a single event—it's a transition. As you approach this stage, financial and personal decisions become more interconnected. We often see people thinking of retirement as a finish line. We help you interpret it as a mindset and a new lifestyle. At the same time, you may also be supporting children or grandchildren, assisting aging parents, or planning for healthcare realities that deserve proactive attention.

The question shifts from "How do I grow wealth?" to "How do I use wealth wisely?" The focus is building a sustainable, tax-aware framework that supports your lifestyle today and for many years to come.

    How We Help
We help you build a coordinated retirement and lifestyle strategy that may include:

    • Retirement income planning designed to support your desired lifestyle across decades
    • Tax-aware distribution strategies across account types to improve after-tax outcomes
    • Investment allocation adjustments aligned with changing time horizons and priorities
    • Cash-flow planning for travel, second homes, gifting, and other major life goals
    • Benefits, pension, Medicare and Social Security analyses
    • Healthcare and long-term care considerations incorporated into retirement preparedness
    • Lending and liquidity planning to preserve flexibility without disrupting the long-term strategy
    • Ongoing risk management to help protect the life you've built

    Outcome
Confidence. Confidence that you can live well, remain independent, enjoy the present, and still protect the long-term stability that makes that lifestyle possible.

    Icon Image
    Retirees

    The Challenge
Legacy planning is about more than documents and tax rules—it's about family, values, and continuity. You may be thinking about what you want your wealth to accomplish beyond your lifetime, how to define fairness among heirs, and how to reduce the impact of transfer taxes. You may also be navigating sensitive realities: blended families, unequal needs among children, varying levels of financial maturity, or concerns that wealth could unintentionally diminish ambition rather than empower it.
    How We Help
We work closely with you—and coordinate with your estate attorney and tax professionals—to support planning that may include:

    • Estate planning coordination, including alignment of account ownership, beneficiary designations, and overall intent
    • Legacy and transfer strategies designed to balance efficiency, flexibility, and control
    • Family conversations and governance support, where appropriate, to promote clarity and continuity
    • Charitable and philanthropic planning aligned with your values and long-term impact goals
    • Wealth education for heirs to help prepare the next generation for responsibility and stewardship
    • Liquidity and risk planning to ensure obligations and opportunities can be met as circumstances evolve
    • Ongoing review and refinement, because laws, family dynamics, and priorities change over time

    Outcome
Confidence and continuity: Confidence that your intentions will be carried out, and continuity in how your family understands, manages, and benefits from wealth across generations.

    Icon Image
    Successful Professionals & Business Owners

    The Challenge
As your success grows, so does the complexity attached to it. You may be balancing rising income, competing priorities, and major decisions—home purchases, family planning, education funding, and long-term financial independence. At the same time, compensation can become more sophisticated, including stock options, restricted stock, bonuses, deferred compensation, or business equity—adding tax exposure and concentration risk to the mix.

    How We Help
We work with you to design an integrated strategy that may include:

    • A planning-driven asset allocation designed for long-term growth while managing volatility and risk
    • Education planning strategies, including 529 plans where appropriate, aligned with your broader priorities
    • Retirement planning that supports both short-term needs and long-term goals
    • Liquidity and cash management planning for near-term priorities and unexpected opportunities
    • Equity compensation planning to help manage taxes, diversification needs, and concentrated positions
    • Insurance and risk management to help protect your income, family, and long-term plan

    Outcome
Momentum—without loss of control. With the right structure in place, your wealth becomes a tool for flexibility, security, and opportunity, while staying aligned with what you want your future to look like.

    Icon Image
    Healthcare Professionals

    The Challenge
As a healthcare professional, your career is often defined by high-stakes decisions along with mental and physical demands. While your income grows through specialization or leadership, so does the weight of your responsibilities. Between managing your demanding (yet rewarding) career, and your own family's needs, finding the time—and the mental energy—to optimize a financial plan can feel like another shift you didn't sign up for.

The goal isn't just to grow an account balance; it's to buy back your freedom. For healthcare professionals, wealth management must also account for the high risk of career fatigue and the physical longevity of the work.

    How We Help
We serve as your Financial Chief of Staff, taking the full weight of wealth management off your plate so you can focus on your patients and your life.

    • Modeling Exit Ramp scenarios that allow for early retirement or career pivots without compromising your long-term security.
    • We can take over the management of your investment accounts, ensuring they work together toward your overall financial goals.
    • Strategies for travel nurse stipends, overtime surges, and shift differentials to minimize your tax burden and maximize your savings
    • Evaluating disability insurance and asset protection to secure your lifestyle.
    • Integrated plans for debt payoff, loan forgiveness or advanced degree funding that doesn't derail your retirement timeline.
    • A trusted partnership where we handle the research, ongoing management, and keep you on track—giving you back your days off.

    Outcome
Clinical excellence—without financial fatigue. By delegating the complexity of your wealth to a professional who understands the healthcare trajectory, you gain the ultimate luxury: peace of mind. Your finances become an automated engine for security and early independence, allowing you to stay in the profession because you want to, not because you have to.

About Chris Blanchfield

For Chris Blanchfield, great financial planning starts with understanding people first. For more than three decades at Morgan Stanley, Chris has partnered with individuals and families to help them feel confident about their decisions, their future, and the legacy they want to create. He believes clarity builds trust, and trust creates better outcomes. His approach is thoughtful, practical, and rooted in long-term relationships.

Originally trained as an engineer after graduating from California State University, Fresno, Chris has always been curious about how things work. That curiosity—and a desire to help others make sense of complex systems—led him to financial services in 1995. Today, many of the clients he first met early in his career still work with him, and in some cases he now serves four generations of the same family. He earned a Master’s Degree in Financial Services from American University and remains passionate about guiding clients through life’s changes with confidence and perspective.

Outside the office, Chris values time with his wife, their two grown children, and two dogs. A lifelong problem-solver and avid woodworker, he enjoys building and improving things with his hands. He’s also a certified scuba diver and free diver, and in his down time you’ll often find him paddle surfing or practicing hot vinyasa yoga—activities that reflect the same balance and focus he brings to his work with clients.
