Dividend Value Portfolio

The Dividend Value managed portfolio has an objective of long-term growth of capital. The common stock portfolio consists of 25 to 30 separate companies with investments per company of up to 4% of the total value. Companies selected show what we feel is an attractive valuation as measured by price earnings multiple, above average earnings growth, and profitability as measured by return on equity. Growth of dividends is an extremely important factor associated with building wealth and income. The Dividend Value portfolio focuses on quality companies that can potentially increase dividends. This strategy is appropriate for an investor with aggressive risk tolerance and a long-term time horizon.

Growth and Income Portfolio

The Growth and Income managed portfolio combines the dividend value approach with fixed income investments. Up to 50% of the portfolio is invested in the dividend companies described above. The remaining 50% of the portfolio is invested in fixed income securities. The mix of ½ common stocks and ½ fixed income or bonds can help reduce volatility and increase current income. The fixed income portfolio consists of a diversified portfolio of corporate bonds, US Treasury and agency securities, preferred stocks, and other fixed income securities. With diversified holdings, the fixed income portfolio aims to provide steady income. This strategy is appropriate for an investor with moderate risk tolerance and an intermediate time horizon.

Fixed Income Portfolio

The Fixed Income managed portfolio is invested 100% in fixed income securities. The diversified portfolio consists of corporate bonds, US Treasury and agency securities, preferred stocks, and other fixed income securities. With diversified holdings the fixed income portfolio attempts to provide steady income. This strategy is appropriate for an investor with conservative risk tolerance and can be tailored to a variety of time horizons. As a team of professionals, we offer depth of experience and service to our clients.

Investment Philosophy

At Morgan Stanley, our investment philosophy is centered on a value-oriented approach, underpinned by rigorous fundamental analysis. Below are our primary focus points.

The selection process starts with a broad universe of US and international companies. There are over 5,000 companies to search for selection and inclusion in the portfolio.

Low Price in Relations to Earnings Price

Relative to earnings (P/E) is one measure of value. We want to own companies at an attractive price relative to earnings. The price paid for an investment is an important determinant of the total return.

    Positive Earnings

Dynamics We favor companies with improving earnings and upwardly trending earnings estimates. We believe earnings drive stock prices. Growing earnings coupled with attractive valuation provides a powerful lever for long term portfolio potential. Our objective is to own a portfolio whose earnings are expected to grow over time.

    High Profitability

We favor companies that are expected to have high profit margins. Profitable companies generate earnings that can be used to grow the business, pay dividends, or buy back shares in the market. Return on Equity (ROE) measures profits in relation to the equity utilized by the company. High ROE is another key measure for selecting companies.

    Dividend Yield and Dividend Growth

We also favor companies that pay a dividend. Dividends provide a measure of stability to the portfolio and help reduce the volatility of the stock market. We prefer dividend paying companies with a history of dividend growth.

    Catalyst for Recognition

In an effort to maximize long-term gains, we look beyond compiling a list of undervalued stocks. We also identify specific catalysts that we believe will cause a stock's price to rise, closing the gap between today's share price and anticipated value of the company.

    Value of the Company

We routinely analyze whether each company in the portfolio is a compelling value. We evaluate the uniqueness of a franchise or brand and seek to own companies with undervalued assets.
