About Us

We believe the majority of people innately want to help others because of the way it makes them feel (good) and they will give more of their time, money, and resources when they are happy and at peace with their own life. The more happy people there are in the world, the better off the world is. But unfortunately, too many people focus on chasing money and returns and will never be satisfied even when they catch it, because we believe money doesn’t equal happiness. And when people are unhappy, they are less likely to help others.

Money shouldn’t be a dream or a goal, but when it’s managed correctly it can be the perfect tool to potentially make dreams and goals come true. Money is a utility or tool that can be skillfully managed in order to navigate through a life we want to live. Money is not some shore we’re headed toward, it’s not the sea we sail upon or even the vessel that transports us and our loved ones. It’s simply a utility we use to help us live our most meaningful life and it must be managed correctly and skillfully if we hope to stay on course living the life we want to live.

The more control we have over our decisions, the more independence we have (or at least feel we have) where we can do what we want, when we want, where we want, and with whom we choose, the more we’re living a life WE want to live, the happier we ultimately are. One of the greatest powers of money is that it can provide a feeling of independence. The more we can help people make good, sound decisions with their wealth, the more empowered they can be and the more independent they feel, which can bring happiness and joy to their life, which we believe will be paid forward and compounded many times over making the world a better place.

The Seven Hills Group Investment Philosophy

Benjamin Graham stated, “Individuals who cannot master their emotions are ill-suited to profit from the investment process”. The Seven Hills Group Investment Philosophy seeks to create confidence and simplicity as we help our clients to build and preserve their wealth, so that they may achieve their goals. As advocates for our clients, we work with them to design a plan and create behavioral discipline, striving to achieve a specific outcome. We feel successful in this endeavor when our clients know where they stand, the direction they’re heading, and that no individual underlying investment that we recommend will dictate whether or not they are successful in achieving their goals.

Dolly Parton said, “If you want the rainbow you’ve gotta put up with rain”. Volatility and market fluctuations cannot be avoided, only mitigated, and should be viewed as an opportunity, not a risk. Without volatility the returns most investors need to achieve goals would not be possible. We believe true risk with investing is permanent loss of capital, which most commonly occurs if we react emotionally to volatility. Downside volatility is one of the largest costs to investing; accepting this to be true, combined with a proper plan and discipline, we seek to reduce the cost of downside volatility to the lowest level possible that can still allow for the returns needed to help achieve a specific outcome.

Bob Marley said, “The day you stop racing is the day you won the race”. We do not focus on beating a particular benchmark. We benchmark against the specific return needed in an effort to achieve a specific outcome, while controlling what we can control: taxes, fees, and cash flow.

JR Randall says, “Personal finance is often times more personal than financial; what might be the right investment for one person may not be appropriate for another”. We believe that business ownership, whether privately held or in the public equity markets, is one of the best ways to build wealth over time. However, which investment vehicle is used to access business ownership and how much of it is owned will be different for each person.

In the end, how investors behave is just as important as how their investments behave. Our Investment Philosophy is built to help manage clients’ hard-earned assets from permanent loss of capital that stems from emotional decision-making.

About J.R. Randall

J.R. Randall has been in the financial services industry since graduating from Xavier University in 2004, where he played on and served as captain of the men’s tennis team. With nearly two decades of experience helping clients navigate through different market environments, J.R. earned his CFP® designation in 2011, and progressed a step further in 2022 by obtaining the Family Wealth Director designation. Utilizing this knowledge, J.R. is able to advise how and when various tax, estate, philanthropic, and other wealth strategies should be implemented. While J.R. serves as the primary financial advisor for families, he very much believes “a man is not a plan” and that having the strength of a team, rather than one person, is much more valuable and sustainable.

When not focusing client solutions and team collaboration, J.R. spends as much time as he can with his wife Michelle and their two wonderful children, Olivia and Sam. They support various charitable organizations with a focus on at-risk and disadvantaged youth. In his free time, J.R. likes to read, practice yoga, and play pickleball.
