Private Markets

The investment landscape is evolving—along with where many of the world’s most compelling companies reside. Compared with two decades ago, there are 64x more private companies relative to public markets, yet market attention often remains concentrated on a small set of highly visible public names. Notably, 81% of companies with more than $100 million in revenue are private rather than public. As a result, many endowments, family offices, and institutions have increasingly built strategic allocations to alternative assets. Our team’s mandate is to “think like an institution” by allocating capital with a similar, long-term framework.

Morgan Stanley’s Alternative Investments platform is designed to provide qualified investors with access to select private markets opportunities, including investments that may otherwise be primarily available to institutional investors. The firm has a long history in alternatives, dating to the launch of its alternative investment capabilities in 1977 with Morgan Stanley Real Estate and Morgan Stanley Managed Futures. Today, Morgan Stanley offers a broad suite of alternative investment solutions across both proprietary and third-party managers.

Morgan Stanley applies a rigorous due diligence and oversight process that incorporates qualitative and quantitative evaluation and is reviewed by senior investment, risk, legal, and compliance professionals. With comprehensive capabilities, diverse talent, and global resources, the platform seeks to help qualified investors pursue objectives such as enhanced returns, diversification, tax-aware positioning, and income generation. Alternative investments can be particularly powerful given their flexibility—often enabling structures and exposures that can be tailored to sophisticated investors’ goals.

7Investors should consider many factors before deciding which 529 plan is appropriate. Some of these factors include: the Plan's investment options and the historical investment performance of these options, the Plan's flexibility and features, the reputation and expertise of the Plan's investment manager, Plan contribution limits and the federal and state tax benefits associated with an investment in the Plan. Some states, for example, offer favorable tax treatment and other benefits to their residents only if they invest in the state's own Qualified Tuition Program. Investors should determine their home state's tax treatment of 529 plans when considering whether to choose an in-state or out-of-state plan. Investors should consult with their tax or legal advisor before investing in any 529 Plan or contact their state tax division for more information.
