Our Investment Philosophy

    Icon Image
    Objective
The objective of our investment strategy is to dynamically adapt the portfolio to the opportunities presented in the market. The intention is to provide the investor the potential to capitalize on shorter term trends, realize increased gains, limit volatility, and provide risk management. Furthermore, by reducing exposure to various assets in prolonged declines, we intend to reduce portfolio risk, reduce exposure to capital loss, and thereby establish a structure intended to provide long-term sustainable growth.
    Icon Image
What Are We Trying to Achieve?
Our goal is to generate returns that are better than benchmark returns (Excess Returns). We seek excess returns above the benchmark in three areas: Equity Selection (better stocks than the benchmark), Bond Selection (better bonds than the benchmark), and a better stock/bond mix than the benchmark.
    Icon Image
    How Do We Do That?
We use an investing technique called Relative Strength to help us identify near-term investment opportunities. We seek to buy strength with the assumption that recent strength, on a relative basis, will continue in the near-to-intermediate term. This technique is applied to the three areas we mentioned above: equity selection, bond selection, and stock/bond mix specification. To illustrate this, consider an equity sleeve. For the sake of an example, we will use US equity sectors.

In steps 1 & 2, we identify nine investable sectors creating a diversified sleeve (Technology, Materials, Financials, Utilities, Industrials, Healthcare, Energy, Consumer Staples, and Consumer Discretionary).

In step 3, we apply a strength screen to the nine sectors by calculating the strength of each sector security and then ranking them from strongest to weakest. We naturally select the strongest sectors from the list, as our rules-based system specifies.

In step 4, we apply a Risk Management Screen to the selected sectors. In this step, we eliminate from investment consideration any security that we reasonably believe would produce negative returns in the near term. Securities that pass this Screen would be marked for investment.

In step 5, we invest with conviction with the belief that our process is likely (but not guaranteed) to generate positive excess returns.
    Icon Image
Putting It All Together for Our Clients
In the example above, we walked through a single equity sleeve. This process can be generalized to the other parts of the equity market, bond market, alternatives, etc.. No investment strategy can be expected to succeed all the time in all time frames, but by incorporating multiple sleeves, we allow for the following properties:
    ○ We allow some sleeves to temporarily underperform while others hopefully produce excess returns.
Multiple sleeves gives us multiple points of control to incrementally adjust position weightings from a bottom-up perspective.

About Paul Luebbe

Mr. Luebbe believes it is incumbent on advisors to provide vision through challenging times. He also believes that the years since 2000 have been a challenge for investors and those trying to build funds for retirement. Being a student of behavioral finance (why investors and advisors make financial decisions), he is committed to looking beyond the world of wishful thinking and is fully committed to embracing a view of reality, as difficult as that may be at times. Only then, he believes, can investment and financial plans be made that can help achieve their goals. 2Investors should consider many factors before deciding which 529 plan is appropriate. Some of these factors include: the Plan’s investment options and the historical investment performance of these options, the Plan’s flexibility and features, the reputation and expertise of the Plan’s investment manager, Plan contribution limits and the federal and state tax benefits associated with an investment in the Plan. Some states, for example, offer favorable tax treatment and other benefits to their residents only if they invest in the state’s own Qualified Tuition Program. Investors should determine their home state’s tax treatment of 529 plans when considering whether to choose an in-state or out-of-state plan. Investors should consult with their tax or legal advisor before investing in any 529 Plan or contact their state tax division for more information. Morgan Stanley Smith Barney LLC does not provide tax and/or legal advice. Investors should review a Program Disclosure Statement, which contains more information on investment options, risk factors, fees and expenses and possible tax consequences.
