As a both a Sports and Entertainment Director for Morgan Stanley and a Certified Financial Planner™, Jason has years of experience working with clients at all stages of their S&E careers, from the initial phases of setting up their savings and retirement plans to late stage estate planning and multi-generational legacy transfer strategies. Our team works collaboratively with our client’s business managers, CPAs and attorneys. This day in, day out, cooperation is essential given the very challenging work and travel schedules of S&E clients in the active phase of their career. Whether it’s a professional athlete on the road or an actor/producer on location, the team approach is critical to keeping financial matters on track. Jason’s long term planning skills can help buffer the uncertainty and sometimes the stark reality that the peak earnings years of some of our clients can be compressed into a relatively short period of their lives.

As a Sports and Entertainment Associate, Steve played 19 years in Major League Baseball and understands first hand the many challenges faced by athletes and their financial needs. He is dedicated to working with S&E clients to help maximize the financial opportunities during their career and think strategically about life after a sports career. Steve understands the complexities and pressures facing high-achieving professionals in the sports and entertainment industries, and helps them make smart choices about how they save, spend, invest, borrow, protect and give. Steve believes that education and guidance is critical to avoiding mistakes and clearing the hurdles necessary for professional athletes to clearly define and meet their long term goals.

Brant was a full scholarship student-athlete at the University of California at Los Angeles and a second round draft selection in the 2007 Major League Baseball draft. He pitched in the New York Mets organization for 5 years before an arm injury forced him to retire from baseball in 2012. Brant has first hand experience managing financial windfalls and understands the psychological and emotional challenges that come with sudden money. He understands how important it is have a comprehensive and personalized financial plan, because you never know if the next pitch could be your last. Since 2015, Brant has been serving high-profile clients and as a Certified Financial Planner™, he brings extensive industry, product and market knowledge to the wealth management process.

About Jason Mubarak

Jason has been with Morgan Stanley for over 20 years and implements wealth-management strategies for clients of The Rancho Santa Fe Group by concentrating on portfolio management and financial planning. As a CertifiedFinancial Planner™ for the team, Jason works closely with clients to help them develop and draft a written comprehensive financial plan to meet their objectives.

As one of the lead portfolio managers for The Rancho Santa Fe Group, Jason is responsible for the behind-the-scenes analytical work for the team’s portfolio management process. He works collaboratively with Jon and Brant on the various income and growth oriented solutions for the Team’s clients.

Jason was raised and currently lives in Rancho Santa Fe, attended local Torrey Pines High School and graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara with high honors where he earned a Bachelor of Arts as a double major in Economics and Environmental Studies. He also earned his Master’s Degree from Duke University. Jason’s multidisciplinary background and experience enables him to maintain a uniquely qualified perspective when analyzing client portfolios and advising high net worth clients. Jason and his wife, Heather, have been married for 20 years and are raising three daughters. Jason enjoys paddle boarding, tennis and running, is an award-winning wine maker, and volunteers for Children’s Hospital of San Diego.

About Brant Rustich

Brant began his financial advisory career at Merrill Lynch before joining the Rancho Santa Fe Group at Morgan Stanley in 2017. Brant attended the University of California at Los Angeles on full scholarship where he received a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and International Relations.

Following successful careers as a professional athlete and business owner, Brant has since been advising high-net worth individuals, families and foundations with wealth creation and preservation strategies. As a Financial Planning Specialist for the Rancho Santa Fe Group, he works closely with clients’ tax advisors and estate attorneys in developing comprehensive, multi-generational financial plans for clients.

In combination with his dynamic life experience, Brant brings extensive industry, product and market knowledge to the wealth management process. Brant focuses on working with business owners, athletes and many high profile clients with asset management, retirement planning, risk management, business succession or exit strategies, cash and debt management, concentrated stock management, and business/corporate retirement plans.

Brant is third generation San Diegan, an ordained minister, and passionate philanthropist for animal conservation in the community. Brant was drafted in the second round of the 2007 Major League Baseball Draft and pitched five years for the New York Mets before an arm injury forced him to retire from baseball. He also founded, managed, and sold a world renowned animal company that specialized in the international commerce of exotic animals and supplies. He enjoys golf, traveling, photography and anything that brings him closer to wildlife. He resides in San Diego, CA with his wife Erica, who is the Giraffe Keeper at the world famous San Diego Zoo.

Steve’s first career was spent in Major League Baseball where he played 19 seasons for 8 different teams.  He has been in the financial services industry since 2010 and joined Morgan Stanley in 2014.  Steve is in charge of business development for The Rancho Santa Fe Group at Morgan Stanley with a focus on clients in the sports and entertainment industry. 

As a Sports and Entertainment Associate, Steve is dedicated to working with athletes and entertainers seeking to maximize their financial opportunities during their career and think strategically about life after these careers.  He understands the complexities and pressures facing high-achieving professionals in the sports and entertainment industries, and helps them make smart choices about how they save, spend, invest, borrow, protect and give. About Jon Schmauss

With more than four decades at Morgan Stanley, Jon implements strategies concentrating on investment management. Jon is firmly committed to long-term relationships striving to deliver exceptional client service. He listens carefully to his client’s goals and, based on this input, works attentively to help them in achieving their financial objectives.

As one of the lead portfolio managers for The Rancho Santa Fe Group, Jon works closely with Jason and Erin co-managing client portfolios across the spectrum of client needs and objectives - from regular consistent income to long-term growth.

Jon is a graduate of Colgate University and toured in the US Navy where he worked as a diving officer and aide to NASA’s space program. He joined Shearson Hammill, one of the many predecessors of the modern Morgan Stanley, in 1967 where he has remained in the firm’s Rancho Santa Fe office ever since. Jon resides in Del Mar, California with his wife, Judi. They have six grown children and three grandchildren. Jon is an avid golfer, loves to travel and spends time in support of the local Boys and Girls Clubs.

About Cristina Haggerty

Since 2000, Cristina has made it her priority to provide exceptional, personalized service for clients in the financial services industry. She joined the firm in 2003 and was recruited to the Rancho Santa Fe Group in 2018, transferring from Morgan Stanley in Indianapolis, Indiana.

As Practice Manager for the team, Cristina leads the organizational, operational and administrative efforts for the RSF Group. She works closely with the team’s advisors with ongoing Financial Planning efforts, building or updating comprehensive plans to help RSFG clients meet both their retirement and life goals. Additionally, Cristina works with the team in their ongoing Portfolio Management process and helping facilitate the weekly proprietary portfolios reviews, along with tracking technical and macro trends.

Having spent most of her life in the Midwest, Cristina’s move to San Diego affords her the time and luxury to be nearer to her two sons and their growing families. Cristina enjoys many of the outdoor activities made possible by the lovely San Diego area, including stand up paddle boarding and hiking, or sipping a glass of wine at a local winery.

About Joel Thorp

Joel rejoined The Rancho Santa Fe Group after spending several years further developing his service and support skills within the San Diego Complex Management Team at Morgan Stanley. He brings back with him nearly two decades of operations and business management experience. Joel’s focus on service includes: account administration, transfers, and digital adoption in order to meet the needs of our clients in the face of ever-changing technology. Joel also supports the team’s analysis of client asset allocation and portfolio tracking. Joel, his wife, Mary, and their son, Carter, enjoy outdoor activities around San Diego, hiking trails, the beaches and farmers markets.

Russ began his career in financial services in 2001, and joined Morgan Stanley in 2018 as a Private Banker. Prior to joining the firm, he was a Wealth Management Banker at Merrill Lynch.
