Welcome to The New River Group

The New River flows through the U.S. states of North Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia before joining with the Gauley River to form the Kanawha River in West Virginia. Part of the Ohio River watershed, it is about 360 miles long.

The origins of the name are uncertain. Possibilities include being a new river that was not on an early map of Virginia, an Indian name meaning “new waters,” or the surname of an early settler. Despite its name, the New River is one of the five oldest rivers in the world geologically.

The New River Group brings new methods and strategies into a well-established business and tradition of excellence.

The New River flows in a generally south-to-north course, at times cutting across the southwest-to-northeast-trending ridges and geological texture of the Appalachian Mountains, and flows directly across the Appalachian Plateau, contrasting with the west-to-east flow of most other major rivers to the east and northeast in Virginia and North Carolina, and on the west side of the Appalachians on the Plateau.

Much like its namesake, the New River Group of Morgan Stanley flows against the grain, providing customized and exceptional service to clients.

“Our basic job is to assist people with their financial goals - every client is different and every form of that is different. Some of that means researching different companies or products that they want to invest in and for other people that might mean to help with all of their finances, including their personal finances.” - Joel

“I believe what makes you successful or valuable to the client is when you have a relationship with the client where they count on you for everything - they want your advice on anything financial and you get to the point where it’s a friendship.” - David

“We aren’t managing these portfolios for tomorrow. We are managing them for the goals that the client set.” - David

“I know I benefit if I do well for [our clients], but my goal is for them to do well.” - David

“I like dealing with the opportunities that the markets represent and helping people grow their assets. It feels good when you walk into a meeting and potentially show them that you’ve made them money in the past year.” - Joel

“You can only influence those things in which you have control over, when it comes to the investment work, you don’t have control over what the markets do. As much as we try to plan, we don’t have control over the market, but we do have control over interactions with the clients.” - Jason

“Obviously, someone’s financial well-being in a important part of their life. It is rewarding to be able to help people achieve goals and do so in a way that they gain a level of comfort while doing it.” - Jason

“I like dealing with the opportunities that the markets represent and helping people grow their assets. It feels good when you walk into a meeting and potentially show them that you’ve made them money in the past year.” - Lee

“Helping people identify their goals and later being able to potentially show that we have achieved them is something that is very rewarding.” - Lee
