That’s true no matter who you love—whether you’re in an opposite-sex or same-sex relationship. Still, members of the LGBTQ+ community often face unique financial considerations, even with federal protections against workplace discrimination now in place and same-sex marriage recognized as a legal right in the U.S.
For LGBTQ+ couples who decide to tie the knot, it’s important to review your financial plans and understand the financial benefits and impacts of marriage.

About Kristi Gruett

Kristi was born in Seattle, Washington in 1964. She is a fourth-generation Washingtonian, her family having homesteaded on Lake Union in the late 1800s. She attended Western Washington University, where she earned a degree in Business Marketing.

After graduating, Kristi joined her family's business, but she soon realized that it was not her passion. She then took a job as a Pharmaceutical Representative for Syntex Labs. She was transferred to Bellingham, where she lived for over 30 years.

A few years later, Kristi then turned to her passion, cooking, and opened a 100-seat restaurant in Bellingham called the Blue Water Bistro. She ran the restaurant for three years before selling it in 1995.

In 1995, Kristi married Jim and joined him at Merrill Lynch as a financial advisor. She has been a financial advisor for over 25 years and has helped many people achieve their goals of financial security and wealth expansion.

In her spare time, Kristi loves to golf, cook, garden, and entertain friends. She is also a strong advocate for giving back to the community. She has served on the boards of many non-profits, including the Assistance League of Bellingham, YWCA, Whatcom Psychiatric and Counseling Clinic, Boys and Girls Club of Whatcom County, and the Bellingham Golf and Country Club.

Kristi is a successful financial advisor, a dedicated community member, and a loving wife and mother. She is an inspiration to those who know her and she is sure to continue to achieve great things in the years to come

About Jim Gruett

I was born and raised in a small town in northern Minnesota and grew up loving the outdoors spending time fishing (summer and winter), swimming, hunting, snowmobiling, and riding dirt bikes. I started playing trumpet in 7th grade and joined all the bands available including concert band, jazz band, marching band and symphonic winds. I am still involved with music and have been playing guitar for nearly 40 years.

After high school, I moved to Tampa, Florida to attend the University of South Florida and worked my way through college, interning at a large advertising agency and working for Coppertone when not in class. After graduating, I moved to Seattle to be closer to my brother in the Seattle area. My first job was selling office equipment in Lynnwood, WA where I met my future wife, Kristi.

In 1991, Kristi and I moved to Bellingham, WA and I worked at a few different jobs while trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my career. In 1993, I started working at Merrill Lynch as a financial advisor. Kristi joined me at Merrill Lynch in 1995 after running and owning a restaurant in downtown Bellingham.

We were married in 1995 and had a son, Kristian, in 1998. In 2001, we moved our practice from Merrill Lynch to Smith Barney and I stayed at Smith Barney until 2009, when I left the business for a year. Kristi maintained the practice during this time. I worked in commercial finance for a few months and also interviewed to be a state trooper, but decided to go back into financial advising.

In 2010, I started a new practice at Wells Fargo Advisors. I moved that practice back to Morgan Stanley in 2015 and have been working as a team with Kristi ever since.

I am a member of the Bellingham Central Lions Club and the Sunrise Rotary Club. I am also a past board member of the Bellingham Golf and Country Club. In my spare time, I’m a passionate golfer and maintain a handicap between 2-5, depending on the time of year. I truly thank my dad for putting a golf club in my hands when I was 8 years old! I’m also an avid outdoorsman and love spending time with my family and friends.

I thoroughly enjoy being a financial advisor at Morgan Stanley which allows me to take care of clients in the best way possible. There is a great satisfaction in helping families reach their desired financial and life goals and I’m proud to be a part of their journey!

About Austin Neufeld

Born and raised in the Pacific Northwest, it is the place I call home. I love the people, seasons and opportunities that this area offers. I received my bachelor’s degree in finance from Western Washington University. During my studies at WWU I became licensed as a Financial Advisor and participated in Northwestern Mutual’ s internship program. After establishing a robust practice at Northwestern Mutual, I was recruited by Morgan Stanley to join the Mt. Baker Group and further their holistic financial planning practice. Behind the numbers, the intimate conversations leading to deep client relationships are the passion for our business. I am invigorated each day by the impactful role I play in helping my clients attaining their goals.

My mantra is “Carpe Diem” or “Seize the Day”. I have intentionally lived this out for many years; however, my conviction behind this way of life was solidified when a doctor uttered that dreaded six letter word. My personal experience of helping a loved one fight for life through a terminal illness and then carrying forward thereafter has provided me with the experience and empathy to help others navigate similar challenges. I recognize the importance of making prudent financial decisions today while still letting yourself live for the moment. It is my mission to help clients like you make informed, wise financial decisions so you can be confident about your finances and spend more time doing what matters most to you.

I am an active father of two young boys, Palmer (7) and Jones (3), who I love to adventure with. As a family, we enjoying exploring new places, learning new things and getting outdoors. I am an avid golfer, cook and skier with an endless desire to see the world.

Fun fact: I have had two holes-in-one
