Financial Counsel for Successful Attorneys

Attorneys are unique when it comes to their finances. Yes, they typically participate in 401(k) plans, but they may also be required to participate in plans that combine the features of defined contribution and defined benefit plans – 401(k) and cash balance retirement plans, for example. While saving in these vehicles reduce current tax liability, they substantially limit investment options, decrease cash flow, and limit funds available to invest independently. Moreover, they may ironically impact your long term wealth and retirement income.

At the Moore Group, we understand the retirement benefits at most law firms and the unique financial challenges faced by attorneys. We have helped partners at some of the most prestigious firms in the country to address the following issues:
    Icon Image
Lack of a Comprehensive Retirement Plan
    • Do you have a clear strategy to reach your retirement goals?
    • Are you efficiently allocating contributions to the right kind of accounts?
    • Are your insurance coverage decisions coordinated with your overall assets?
    • Are you on track to have the retirement income you desire?

There may be several changes you could be making now to potentially significantly improve your future results.
    Icon Image
    Lack of Diversification and Choice
    • Do managers of US equity portfolios with ostensibly different strategies own many of the same stocks?
    • Does your firm retirement plan include funds with low correlation to the public stock market?

Many institutional and high net worth investors incorporate an allocation to alternative investments, when appropriate.
    Icon Image
    Lack of Coordination
    • Are the investments in your firm retirement plan coordinated with your other investment accounts?

Chances are, you’ve developed an asset allocation for your 401(k) plan and any other investment accounts you maintain outside of your firm.
Your overall allocation is a reflection of your timeframe and risk tolerance, and is often seen as one of the most important determinant of portfolio performance.

Our 4 Step Process

The hallmark of our wealth management process is a longstanding commitment to building customized strategies from the ground up, utilizing our experience, wisdom and the intellectual capital of Morgan Stanley. Our goals-based approach leads to strategies that are not only designed to help reach specific financial targets, but are reflective of who you are and how you plan to enjoy the wealth you’ve worked hard to achieve.

Financial Planning

Tab Image
We provide comprehensive wealth management services for our high net worth clients.

Our Financial Planning process is the core of what we do and it provides a platform to help uncover clients’ needs and obstacles to achieving their goals.

We approach clients’ needs in a consultative manner, providing non-biased advice and possible solutions.
What are your goals for retirement?
Your income has most likely increased significantly over the past 10 years. However, there are key decisions you need to be making now that may have a meaningful impact on your long term wealth.

Our approach to wealth and financial planning focuses on helping you make the right decisions to reach your goals and maximize wealth and income in retirement by looking at the following:

• Developing an optimal mix of contributions to 401(k) plans, IRA's, and after tax investment accounts.
• Do you have access to investment strategies with limited correlation with public equities, such as alternative investments, if appropriate for your situation?
• Is there overlap in holdings between accounts?
• Are the type of investments optimized by account type?
• Can your overall asset allocation help achieve your financial goals?
• Are you taking on more risk than you expected?
• Do you have enough Insurance coverage based on current financial needs?
• How much do you need to live comfortably in retirement?
• Reviewing other sources of income in retirement in addition to your portfolio (for example, Social Security, pensions, annuity income, part-time employment).

Asset allocation and diversification do not guarantee a profit or protect against loss in a declining financial market.

8Investors should consider many factors before deciding which 529 plan is appropriate. Some of these factors include: the Plan’s investment options and the historical investment performance of these options, the Plan’s flexibility and features, the reputation and expertise of the Plan’s investment manager, Plan contribution limits and the federal and state tax benefits associated with an investment in the Plan. Some states, for example, offer favorable tax treatment and other benefits to their residents only if they invest in the state’s own Qualified Tuition Program. Investors should determine their home state’s tax treatment of 529 plans when considering whether to choose an in-state or out-of-state plan. Investors should consult with their tax or legal advisor before investing in any 529 Plan or contact their state tax division for more information. Morgan Stanley Smith Barney LLC does not provide tax and/or legal advice. Investors should review a Program Disclosure Statement, which contains more information on investment options, risk factors, fees and expenses and possible tax consequences.
