Meet The Mixon Smith Thomason Group

About Timothy Mixon

With more than 25 years of experience and as a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ practitioner, I help provide clients with a comprehensive approach to managing and preserving wealth. I work closely with business owners, corporate executives, and families to address complex financial needs and build strategies for multigenerational success.

What sets me apart is not only my professional training but also my curiosity and creativity. From an early age, I’ve looked for innovative solutions—like the time in college when I helped expand my family’s nursery business by launching a seasonal branch. The experience taught me the power of analysis, planning, and execution, and I invested my first profits into 100 shares of Wal-Mart stock—an early step toward a lifelong career in wealth management.

Over the years, I’ve built a successful practice by serving high-net-worth and ultra-high-net-worth clients across diverse industries and backgrounds. My personalized process is built on three pillars—Plan, Advise and Serve—ensuring that every strategy is tailored, every investment is purposeful, and every decision supports your vision of success. This commitment has earned the loyalty of clients who’ve stayed with me through every stage of their financial journeys.

I graduated from Florida State University with a B.S. in Marketing and earned an MBA from Troy University. After beginning my career at a small brokerage firm in Buckhead, I joined Morgan Stanley Dean Witter in 1999. In 2008, I co-founded The Mixon Smith Thomason Group to build a team of dedicated professionals who share my passion for helping clients achieve their definition of success.

I live in Woodstock, Georgia, with my wife, Dr. Shayne Mixon, PharmD. We’ve raised two wonderful children and share our home with a lively Siberian Husky named Dakota. Outside of work, I’ve coached youth football, served as a Booster Club President, and enjoy being a devoted cheer and track dad.

I believe choosing a financial advisor should be about more than designations—it’s about trust, character, and the drive to help families thrive across generations.

About R Scott Smith

With more than 30 years of experience in financial services, I focus on building and managing investment portfolios for high-net-worth individuals, affluent families, charities, and foundations. As a Portfolio Management Director, I am responsible for researching, constructing, and overseeing our team’s investment strategies—aligning growth and income opportunities with the right balance of risk to reflect both current markets and long-term goals.

I strive to treat every client like family. For me, portfolio management is more than a profession—it’s a calling to help clients achieve the financial goals that matter most. Some of my most rewarding moments are sharing good news when clients reach milestones we’ve worked toward together.

After earning a BBA in Marketing with a concentration in Finance from the University of Georgia’s Terry College of Business, I began my career at a New York-based mutual fund before becoming a Financial Advisor in 1991. I joined Morgan Stanley in 1998, serving in leadership roles before returning to my true passion: guiding clients directly. In 2009, I co-founded The Mixon Smith Thomason Group, where I continue to help families preserve and grow their wealth across generations.

I live in Cumming, Georgia, with my wife, Priscilla, and our three children—twin boys and a daughter. We enjoy hiking, traveling, and time together with our two German Shepherds. Outside of the office, I am an FAA-licensed pilot, coach middle school football, and volunteer at Browns Bridge Church. I also enjoy clay target shooting and exploring global markets and economics.

I believe that choosing the right advisor comes down to more than just performance—it’s about trust, stewardship, and a long-term commitment to helping families thrive.

About Shannon Thomason

For more than 30 years, I’ve built my career around helping clients understand their portfolios and how today’s headlines connect to their long-term financial goals. My focus has always been on delivering an exceptional client experience through clear communication, thoughtful planning, and personal connection.

I began my career in financial services while studying Finance at Georgia State University, first as a bank teller and later as a secretary in Morgan Stanley’s Municipal Bond Underwriting Department. Over the years, I worked my way into wealth management, eventually co-founding The Mixon Smith Thomason Group in 2008. These experiences shaped my belief that great advice starts with listening deeply and creating an environment where clients feel supported, understood, and confident about their future.

One of the most rewarding parts of my role is building relationships that span generations. I’ve had the privilege of advising clients in their 90s, their children, and now even their grandchildren—helping families navigate everything from retirement planning and tax-efficient portfolios to buying first homes and starting 529 plans.

Outside of work, I live on a horse farm in Cumming, Georgia, with my husband and our blended family of four grown children. A lifelong equestrian, I actively compete in endurance riding with my daughter and have served as President of the Southeast Endurance Riders Association. My passion for horses also extends to philanthropy, as I support two local rescue organizations and have personally rescued and rehomed several horses.

I love what I do, the people I am blessed to meet, and the legacies we help families build across generations.

About Lee Cannon

As a Financial Advisor with The Mixon Smith Thomason Group, my mission is to help individuals and families set and achieve their unique financial goals with clarity and confidence. I believe financial success looks different for everyone, which is why I take a holistic approach to understand the full picture of your life, not just what numbers say about you. My approach is grounded in empathy—I put myself in my clients’ shoes and tailor solutions to their goals.

Within our practice, I oversee the NextGen Wealth Initiative, a program designed to help clients in the middle stages of their careers maximize growth and prepare for their prime earning years. I also guide clients through insurance and annuity strategies, adding critical layers of protection that help preserve not just wealth, but families and futures.

I graduated Magna Cum Laude from Kennesaw State University with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree with a concentration in Economics and Finance. Since joining Morgan Stanley in 2019, I have been honored to receive the firm’s Pace Setter Award for 2022, 2023, and 2024. One of the most rewarding aspects of my role is seeing clients reach—and often exceed—the goals our team helped them set years ago.

Outside of work, I value time with my wife, Lauren, and our two children. Our daughter Emma is still at home, while our son Jackson is a junior at Austin Peay State University and Captain of the football team (Let’s Go Peay!). As a family, we’re active members of Woodstock Baptist Church and enjoy spending time outdoors, playing sports, and walking our beagle, Sony. In my spare time, I can usually be found on the golf course, the tennis court, or cheering from the sidelines at my kids’ games.

I believe the right advisor should offer more than financial expertise. It’s about trust, understanding, and a genuine commitment to helping families thrive across generations.

About Chelsey Melton

As the first point of contact for many clients, I take pride in delivering exceptional service that inspires confidence and makes each interaction seamless. My role spans the operational side of wealth management—managing money movement, addressing service inquiries, and helping clients take advantage of our firm’s digital tools. Behind the scenes, I ensure that processes run smoothly so clients can focus on their financial goals with peace of mind.

Before joining Morgan Stanley in 2015, I built a career that sharpened my ability to protect clients and solve complex challenges. I worked as a Fraud Specialist at E*Trade, where I learned the importance of vigilance and security—skills I continue to use today. I also spent a decade in the insurance industry specializing in personal coverage. Along the way, I earned my Series 7, 66, Life and Health Insurance, and Variable Products licenses.

I graduated from the University of Nevada with a Bachelor of Science in Business Management. Today, I live in Canton, Georgia, with my husband, Tony, and our two dogs. I enjoy restoring old furniture and have a growing collection of power tools. Community service is also an important part of my life—I volunteer with a disaster relief team that provides cleanup support after natural disasters in Georgia and surrounding states.

For me, clients are an extension of our family, and I strive to make sure every person I work with feels heard, cared for, and supported.
