Our Service and Values

Welcome to the Meltzer Dunn Fakhoury Group at Morgan Stanley Private Wealth Management.

Our team offers two integrated practices designed to provide an exceptional experience, and cater to both high-net-worth and emerging-wealth profile clients.

  • Our Private Wealth Management practice specializes in the needs of high-net-worth individuals, families, businesses, and foundations. Areas of focus include tax efficiency, wealth structuring, business transition and legacy planning, trust & estate review/optimization, advanced insurance planning, and portfolio risk management.
  • Our Emerging Wealth Practice leverages the resources and expertise of the full team to deliver the same standard of care and service to clients in the accumulation phase of their lives. Emphasis is on long-term financial planning and asset allocation.

Our practice centers around four core values:

1. Service

  • Deliver deeply thoughtful and distinct advice regarding asset allocation, as well as levels of service and experience that make all clients referenceable.
  • Timely communication is table stakes.
  • Attention to detail is a must in our business.
  • Actively look for opportunities to go above and beyond expectations of clients.

2. Proactive & Collaborative Approach

  • We strive to stay ahead of changes, not react to them, and we always communicate our view of them quickly.
  • It is our responsibility to know what is happening in the economy and markets, and how it impacts our clients.
  • We make decisions with clients collaboratively. Where it's welcome, we educate clients, and want them to be completely comfortable with the "what" and the "why" at all times.

3. Accountability

  • Integrity. It is our duty to put our clients' best interest first, ahead of all other considerations.
  • Due diligence. Research and debate potential allocations. We recommend only those investments that are rigorously vetted and agreed upon by our team's Investment Committee.
  • Transparency. We want clients to know and understand everything they own, why they own it, how they own it (from a tax efficiency perspective), and what fees they are paying.
  • Hard work. In finding ways to help clients, we leave no stone unturned, and offer nothing less than our best. No detail is too small – we track down answers to every question.

4. Family

  • This is more than a job for us, and we live that every day. It is reflected in how we care and work for our clients and each other.
  • Our clients are an extension of our family.
  • We are honored that multi-generational relationships spanning decades are the rule among our clients, not the exception.

Thanks to the trust our clients have placed in us, Louis Meltzer, Jacob Dunn, and Hadi Fakhoury have all been named to Forbes' list of Best-in-State Advisors and/or Top Next-Generation Wealth Advisors for 2024 and we have been named a Forbes Best-In-State Wealth Management Team for 2024..

Specialized Pre-Liquidity Planning

Our team is deeply familiar with a comprehensive approach to tax minimization/efficiency for business owners and venture-backed private company founders, executives, and early employees. Financial optimization in such cases requires a proactive, forward-looking and strategic outlook related to planning, based on one's individual circumstances.
Our checklist for business owners considers the following key items, among others:

  • Updated trust & estate documents and gifting equity. Having an updated business appraisal done, and potentially gifting shares to an irrevocable trust may make sense if the value of one's business is likely to exceed the current estate tax limits, which are currently set to fall by ~50% in 2026. It is also important to regularly review and update core trust and estate documents, particularly as family and business circumstances change.
  • QSBS exclusion rule. If one owns shares of a C-Corp (or options he or she exercised before the company reached the $50 million level in gross assets), there may be opportunities with Qualified Small Business Stock exclusion rule or Section 1202 of the tax code. While industry-specific, there are potential opportunities to have significant capital gains events be tax-free in nature.
  • Re-titling personal assets to revocable trusts. Understanding titling of personal, business, and investments assets is crucially important to ensure it aligns with a client's desired outcomes based on his/her current estate plan. Many times we encounter clients who have executed a revocable trust but never re-titled any assets into the trust – which is critical so as to avoid probate, a public court process, and create an ownership contingency plan in the event of disability or mental incapacity.
  • Insurance planning. Insurance is an important piece of a client's overall estate plan, and should be reviewed and monitored on a regular basis. Oftentimes, we find that clients are paying premiums from a checking account when policies are owned by a trust, or that they are under insured from a buy/sell agreement point of view for their business, or simply don't have enough term insurance to support their lifestyle in the event of a pre-mature death. Life insurance can also be a very income tax-efficient tool to help with estate liquidity and/or as an asset replacement strategy.
  • Annual gifting to children. Annual exclusion gifts (to children, trusts, etc.) in an amount under the taxable limit (currently $17,000 per person), and setting up trusts for recipients to receive such annual gifts is worth considering for those with taxable estates.
  • Avoiding overlapping risk in investment allocations. Owners of businesses in select industries or asset classes often invest in what they think they know best, but this can duplicate risk in their overall asset allocation. We look at the world through a risk lens, and this means we focus on ensuring that the correlations between major asset exposures (including equity in a private business that may dominate one's investment profile plus one's outside, more liquid investments) are minimized.
