Art may play a significant role in the context of a collector's overall wealth. It is estimated that 5-10% of an ultra-high net worth individual's balance sheet is art and collectibles which approximates $3 trillion of art privately held.

It is prudent for a collector to carefully consider the role of art on a balance sheet and critical for art owners to have a strategic plan for their art which addresses considerations during life and after death.

Executive Compensation

Equity compensation can be one of the most valuable benefits offered by your company, but it’s important to understand how they work—and how they’re taxed. For example, one type of equity award may trigger certain federal taxes depending on the circumstances—federal ordinary income tax, the alternative minimum tax, and federal short- or long-term capital gains tax. Here’s what you need to know:
    Icon Image
    Executive Compensation Overview
Executives today are increasingly compensated with stock or stock options. A benefit of receiving stock or options is that they allow the employee to share in the growth of the company without making a current investment (by purchasing stock or exercising options). However, exercising stock options presents a number of difficult and sometimes divergent choices.

    Incentive Stock Option (ISO) Basics
A stock option is not the same as a share of common stock. A stock option is a right to buy a set number of shares of the company’s common stock at a set price (the “exercise price”).

    Non-qualified Stock Option (NSO) Basics
For tax purposes, employee stock options are classified as either Incentive Stock Options (ISOs) or Non-qualified Stock Options (NSOs). The primary difference between the two lies in their tax treatment.

    Managing a Concentrated Stock Position
Ultra-high net worth individuals often end up holding large amounts of their wealth in the common shares of a single company. Whether acquired through equity-based compensation, inheritances or other avenues, these concentrated stock positions will often have generated a great deal of wealth for these investors. However, concentrated positions can also pose significant risks.

9Investors should consider many factors before deciding which 529 plan is appropriate. Some of these factors include: the Plan’s investment options and the historical investment performance of these options, the Plan’s flexibility and features, the reputation and expertise of the Plan’s investment manager, Plan contribution limits and the federal and state tax benefits associated with an investment in the Plan. Some states, for example, offer favorable tax treatment and other benefits to their residents only if they invest in the state’s own Qualified Tuition Program. Investors should determine their home state’s tax treatment of 529 plans when considering whether to choose an in-state or out-of-state plan. Investors should consult with their tax or legal advisor before investing in any 529 Plan or contact their state tax division for more information. Morgan Stanley Smith Barney LLC does not provide tax and/or legal advice.
