Our Story

We believe that wealth is measured in far more than dollars and cents. It is also measured by the relationships you’ve built, the goals you’ve accomplished and the values that shape your life and legacy. Money is simply a useful tool, one that enables you to pursue your vision of a life well-lived.  As your advisors, we help you get connected to your money and what it means for you and your family. We focus less on how much you have than on how you can use what you have to help achieve your financial goals at every stage of life, whether it’s buying a home, growing a business, creating a comfortable retirement, or transferring wealth. We encourage you to think of yourself as a company—with income, expenses and even shareholders—and we serve as your personal CFO, helping you understand how much you need to live the life you envision and what you will need to do to get there. The foundations of our success are financial planning, exceptional service and an extensive suite of wealth management solutions that are customized to your unique needs. With our integrated approach, we explore various aspects of your financial life, seeking to maximize your opportunities and minimize your risks. Our goal is to help take a weight off your shoulders. We find joy, purpose and meaning in helping solve problems. You want to work with people you trust, people you can rely on through thick and thin. Having served our clients as a team of equals for nearly 15 years, we offer the stability and loyalty you seek. We take the greatest care in forging relationships that span across multiple generations. When you work with us, you can benefit from a balance of perspectives and become part of our extended financial family. Like you, we are in the trenches of life, so we understand your challenges. Each and every day, we strive to create a positive impact and simplify your financial life so you can focus on leading your most fulfilling life.

The Johnston Group Method

We adopt a multigenerational approach to wealth management that encompasses wealth creation, preservation and distribution or transfer strategies. What has derived from this is a disciplined strategy—rather than managing risk in the market, we seek to manage wealth for the purpose of distribution, whether it’s for buying a house, paying for a child’s college education, or providing income in retirement. We believe in the three buckets methodology, where the first bucket of money is designated for years one to five, the second for years six to 10, and the third for 10+ years. Using the three buckets as a timeline, we strive to structure your assets so that your first bucket is invested in vehicles that are not affected by fluctuations in the market. Your second bucket is kept in a defensive position so that, even in the worst-case scenario, you may have five years of income in an effort to support the lifestyle you choose. What this means for you is that the money you have in the market is money that you will not need for a decade or more. In our experience, this approach helps transform money from a cause for concern into a tool for helping pursue—and achieve—your financial goals.

2Investors should consider many factors before deciding which 529 plan is appropriate. Some of these factors include: the Plan’s investment options and the historical investment performance of these options, the Plan’s flexibility and features, the reputation and expertise of the Plan’s investment manager, Plan contribution limits and the federal and state tax benefits associated with an investment in the Plan. Some states, for example, offer favorable tax treatment and other benefits to their residents only if they invest in the state’s own Qualified Tuition Program. Investors should determine their home state’s tax treatment of 529 plans when considering whether to choose an in-state or out-of-state plan. Investors should consult with their tax or legal advisor before investing in any 529 Plan or contact their state tax division for more information. Morgan Stanley Smith Barney LLC does not provide tax and/or legal advice. Investors should review a Program Disclosure Statement, which contains more information on investment options, risk factors, fees and expenses and possible tax consequences.
