Investment Philosophy

Our investment philosophy is focused on the long term. To help our clients effectively navigate their financial future, we design portfolios that are resilient and sustainable. Essentially, we are executing strategies that deliver positive impact, alongside financial return, while positioning your investments for a more resilient and sustainable future.

To manage money and risk to the best of our ability, we look at all of the data available to us, which includes environmental and social criteria alongside financial criteria. In addition to doing good, environmental and social data is material for understanding the risks of a company, which allows us to make better investment decisions, reduce risk, and strive to reach client goals.

Above all we are client-centric, and no two clients are the same. Guided by data, we engage clients at various levels within the sustainable investing space. We help create custom investment plans that integrate impact throughout your entire portfolio, catered to your specific impact priorities. Our strategies are designed to perform over long time periods, through volatility and change.

For clients interested in more targeted exposure to specific impact themes, we can supplement your core investment portfolio by investing a portion of your assets in any of our four thematic strategies: environmental impact, gender equity, racial equity, and animal welfare.
    Icon Image
    Indigo Gender Lens Strategy
The Indigo Gender Lens Strategy (GLS) seeks to invest in companies that advance women in leadership roles and maintain higher levels of gender diversity.

As an impact investment opportunity, gender diversity is about identifying ways in which achieving balance in representation, empowerment, and economic opportunity is material to financial outcomes. A growing body of evidence points to better financial performance associated with higher levels of gender diversity. (Morgan Stanley, “The Gender Advantage” March 2019)

    Indigo Environmental Impact Strategy
The Indigo Environmental Impact Strategy (EIS) is a broad Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) strategy with thematic elements in sustainable solutions, such as renewable energy and clean technology.

ESG factors consider how a company does business, meaning the sustainability and societal impact of its business operations. Beyond how a company does business, we also look at what type of business the company is in. This means more actively seeking exposure to companies whose business models are aligned with solving environmental issues or proactively adjusting to climate change.

    Indigo Animal Welfare Strategy
On top of ESG integration, this portfolio does not invest in companies that exploit animals through: animal testing (pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical); factory farms; live animal entertainment; exhibiting or breeding animals. The portfolio also avoids companies on the USDA’s and PETA’s testing list.

Animal agriculture is estimated to account for 51% of greenhouse gas emissions, and expected to increase to 80% by 2050. About a quarter of all stocks are in animal exploitation industries. (World Watch Magazine, Volume 22, No. 6) (Nature. Vol. 515)

    Black Leadership Empowerment (BLE) Strategy
In collaboration with The Melior Group at Morgan Stanley, BLE is a racial equity portfolio investing in Black leadership and representation in S&P 500 companies.

Specifically, this portfolio strives to invest in companies with at least two Black directors on the board and/or Black representation in the C-suite. We also look at corporate policies enacted to address racial justice.

As an investment opportunity, racial equity is about identifying ways in which achieving balance in representation, empowerment and economic opportunity is material to financial outcomes.

2The returns on a portfolio consisting primarily of Environmental, Social and Governance (“ESG”) aware investments may be lower or higher than a portfolio that is more diversified or where decisions are based solely on investment considerations. Because ESG criteria exclude some investments, investors may not be able to take advantage of the same opportunities or market trends as investors that do not use such criteria.
