    Retirement Spending Reality
The traditional way to estimate a person’s retirement needs is to assume they will spend some portion of their final salary every year, adjusted for inflation. This simplification tends to overestimate how much a retiree will need and inaccurately represents spending patterns. Empirically, spending is typically front-loaded in the more
active retirement years. This pattern actually increases plan risk, especially the risk of not being able to meet essential expenses.

Our Global Investment Office constructed six retiree profiles corresponding with differing circumstances and priorities among retirees. For example, some prioritize travel while others choose to spend on home projects. The results corroborate the importance of accurately identifying spending patterns and show how three key strategies can mitigate risk:
    (1) time-segmented bucketing; (2) working early in retirement; and (3) cutting spending when investment returns are poor.

Dollar-Cost Averaging Versus Lump-Sum Investing: Behavioral Considerations and Potential Outcomes
Investors understandably would like a favorable start when deploying capital into their portfolios. But even for those with a long-term investment horizon, the desire to avoid stumbling out of the gate can prove distracting. Add to that a visceral aversion to losses, and investors can often become paralyzed by decisions of how and when to invest.

We believe that, for investors to reach their long-term goals, they must commit to a carefully constructed plan. Our Global Investment Office published this primer with the intent to empower informed decisions when launching an investment program or redeploying capital. Specifically, it provides guidance on two potential courses of action: dollar-cost averaging and lump-sum investing.

Diversification Strategies for Public Company Executives
Wealth creation for public company C-suite executives is bound inextricably to their company’s stock price—and for good reason: making share price returns a critical driver of executive compensation is a way for corporate boards and shareholders to align management’s focus with company performance. The downside, though, is that this linkage can lead to executives’ investment portfolios becoming concentrated in a single stock. As a consequence, executives’ income (through their employment) and net worth (via their equity holdings) can face material idiosyncratic risk.

Our Global Investment Office explores a few strategies to help achieve diversification.
