Background about the HER Day & HER Way Initiative

The Cunningham Group co-created the HER Day summit, which was held in NYC for the first time in November 2017 and featured HER TALKS from notable thought leaders and influencers on the topics of health and wellness, entrepreneurism, philanthropy, professional development and personal finance. To build on the momentum of this event, in 2018 we launched HER Way, a new, cross-platform community of women dedicated to helping one another achieve our personal and financial goals. HER Way engages community members through a regular series of dynamic speakers talking about the financial and personal issues important to all of us. HER Way’s goal is simple but powerful: feel informed, inspired, and embrace your financial decision making while building a strong network. Free and empower yourself to pursue your interests and passions and live your best life, the way you want – your way.

About Me

Sharon Cunningham is a Senior Vice President, Senior Portfolio Management Director, Financial Advisor, and founding partner of The Cunningham Group at Morgan Stanley’s Wealth Management Division in New York City. A seasoned wealth management professional for more than 25 years, Sharon has dedicated her entire career to providing highly customized life stage financial planning and investment growth strategies to individuals, families, and small business owners. Her comprehensive approach to financial management includes a thorough planning process and a commitment to providing outstanding service and advice with passion and integrity. She makes understanding her clients’ goals and values a top priority, and works tirelessly to help them achieve their personal and financial objectives.

Sharon has been concentrating on women’s financial issues since she began working as a financial advisor in 1990, a time when there were very few female advisors in the industry. Quickly recognizing that women were often overlooked as potential clients and excluded from financial discussions, she set out to change the industry norm. She began by dedicating much of her efforts to educating and empowering women through financial seminars and workshops designed specifically for them. She also took an active role in supporting many women’s organizations around the block and around the globe. These organizations include Mothers2Mothers; Women for Women International; and the Girl Scout Council of Greater New York. Not only does her leadership, dedication, and passion to advocating their causes help these groups grow financially, but her vital role as a catalyst connects these organizations with clients and other influencers to achieve their collective goals.

Over the years, Sharon’s interest in “wealth with purpose” has extended beyond women’s causes to support an array of other philanthropic programs. She currently serves as an advisor to many non-profits and family foundations. She is a member of the Board of Directors for New York Collaborates for Autism. Sharon is also a regular guest at the annual Social Impact Exchange, a forum that brings together a community of funders, social investors, philanthropists, and advisors to share knowledge and ideas, and increase funding to scale high-impact nonprofit programs and initiatives.

Sharon has been recognized throughout her career for her pioneering commitment to improving women’s financial acumen and for her dedication to important social and philanthropic efforts. She is an annual attendee of the Barron’s Winner’s Circle Top Women Advisor Summit, a member of Morgan Stanley Women’s Business Exchange, and has been honored by the Greater New York Chamber of Commerce for her outstanding contributions to the financial industry. Sharon has also been featured in OnWallStreet Magazine’s ‘LifeStories’ column, and was recently named a 2014 recipient of the John J. Mack Leadership Award at Morgan Stanley. This honor, named on behalf of Morgan Stanley’s former CEO and Chairman of the Board, is bestowed upon those individuals who exemplify the firm’s core values – putting clients first, leading with exceptional ideas, doing the right thing and giving back – and who make a positive impact on their colleagues and the communities in which they live and work.

Sharon’s career began in 1990 as a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER with IDS Financial Services, the financial planning division of American Express.  A graduate of Adelphi University with a degree in Business Management and Finance, she obtained her certificate in financial planning from New York University.  Sharon currently resides in Rye Brook, NY, with her husband, Brian, and their two children, Olivia and Griffin.

1Investors should consider many factors before deciding which 529 plan is appropriate. Some of these factors include: the Plan’s investment options and the historical investment performance of these options, the Plan’s flexibility and features, the reputation and expertise of the Plan’s investment manager, Plan contribution limits and the federal and state tax benefits associated with an investment in the Plan. Some states, for example, offer favorable tax treatment and other benefits to their residents only if they invest in the state’s own Qualified Tuition Program. Investors should determine their home state’s tax treatment of 529 plans when considering whether to choose an in-state or out-of-state plan. Investors should consult with their tax or legal advisor before investing in any 529 Plan or contact their state tax division for more information. Morgan Stanley Smith Barney LLC does not provide tax and/or legal advice. Investors should review a Program Disclosure Statement, which contains more information on investment options, risk factors, fees and expenses and possible tax consequences.
