Our Process Step by Step

Every successful journey starts with solid planning. The Cardinal Group helps create your roadmap by developing strategic recommendations based on a clear understanding of your goals and your vision for the future. Our seven-step planning process is designed to identify the strengths and weaknesses of your financial position, align decisions to objectives, and help us stay nimble and adapt as circumstances change. We guide every client through the following experience:
    Icon Image
    Introductory Meeting
We begin with a brief conversation to get to know one another. We understand that choosing a financial advisory team is a weighty decision and it’s important that everyone is certain that this is a good fit. We’ll identify your goals, values and concerns and answer any questions that you may have about our team and methodology.
    Icon Image
    Discovery Meeting
Assuming the decision is made to take the next step, we introduce you our financial planning and portfolio management processes. Sometimes this meeting happens immediately after the initial conversation, but often it occurs a few days to a few weeks later. The discovery meeting is the time for us to start having more in-depth conversations about your current financial situation and your goals for the future. During this meeting we will collect any relevant asset and liability statements, insurance policies, and estate and tax documents, we will discuss your goals for retirement and any other upcoming needs, wants and wishes, and explore any concerns you have with regard to your financial goals.
    Icon Image
Analyze Your Finances and Develop Your Plan
Before we meet again we will review and assess the information you’ve provided for us. Because we believe that a solid plan is the key to success, this period is largely devoted to the creation of a comprehensive wealth management plan. During this time we also perform a high level analysis of your current investment portfolio to bring to your attention and address any unexpected risks or problems.
    Icon Image
    Deliver Your Wealth Management Plan
One to two weeks later, we will meet to discuss your personalized wealth management plan. We use industry leading financial planning tools to develop recommendations to help you protect and grow your wealth and achieve your goals. This includes retirement and estate planning strategies and a risk tolerance assessment.. Should you decide to begin a relationship with the Cardinal Group we will begin opening your new accounts and initiating the transfer of assets to Morgan Stanley.
    Icon Image
    Investment Strategy Implementation
If your financial plan is the map to reach your long term goals, a solid investment plan is the vehicle to help get you there. Once your assets have transferred we will present strategies to fine tune your wealth plan and address concerns such as taxes, income needs, and risk to modify your current portfolio. Once we receive your approval, we will start to put the recommended strategies into place. We begin to conduct trades and implement the agreed-upon investment approach.
    Icon Image
    Monitor Progress
In the first few months of our new relationship you can expect frequent contact from our team as we report on the implementation of the investment plan, review your early account statements, walk you through online account access and mobile resources, and address any outstanding concerns. We then establish periodic review meetings when we will check in to discuss the health of your investments and any changes that may affect your wealth plan. You will also be able to track your progress via Morgan Stanley Online. As any of your circumstances change, we will align your strategy with new objectives.

Wealth Management Philosophy

    Icon Image
We believe that investors who take advantage of professional advice have a greater chance of attaining their goals that those who do not.
    Icon Image
We believe that the financial and regulatory landscape has become increasingly complex and that we provide a valuable service to our clients by helping them make sense of it all.
    Icon Image
We believe that a deep discovery process and regular, open communication leads to a true shared understanding of your personal and financial goals and the best possible client experience.
    Icon Image
We believe that investing is an emotional process, and that an informed and objective financial advisor can help manage those emotions, leading to better outcomes.
    Icon Image
We believe that a disciplined approach to portfolio construction and careful risk management are some of the keys to a successful investment plan.
    Icon Image
We believe that the cost of professional advice is much lower than the cost of getting it wrong.
    Icon Image

Meet The Cardinal Group

About Christopher Symank

Christopher Symank
Senior Vice President
Senior Portfolio Manager
Investment Management Consultant
Financial Advisor
CA Insurance License #0G37418
NMLS #1275723

Chris has an entrepreneurial background. Prior to launching his career in financial services, he founded two companies focused on the production and sale of agricultural commodities. His experiences building, growing, and ultimately selling these companies have helped him understand the emotional commitment and sacrifice required of a successful business owner.

That connection fueled his decision to co-found The Cardinal Group at Morgan Stanley with Neil Menzies in 2008. Chris works closely with the team’s business-owner clients, bringing his personal experience to bear as he helps them grow, integrate and, where necessary, separate, their business and personal finances. Chris also acts as the team’s chief portfolio manager and is responsible for investment due diligence.

Born and raised in the St. Louis area, Chris relocated to California in the early 1980’s. He attended high school in the East Bay and then moved to the Peninsula where he earned a bachelor’s degree from Stanford University. A devoted supporter of his alma mater, Chris is a member of the Stanford Alumni Association, the Buck Cardinal Club, and a season ticket holder to Stanford Football—a passion he has instilled in his three sons.

Chris lives in San Ramon with his wife Lisa, and their sons. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoys backpacking and fishing with his boys and volunteers with his church as an elder and youth leader. He also enjoys gourmet cooking, gardening, and travel.
