A Passion for my Clients

Inspired by the eye-opening statistics from an ESPN '30 for 30' documentary, which reveals that a staggering 78 percent of former professional athletes experience financial turmoil within two years of retirement, I've dedicated myself to helping these young athletes with their financial futures. Many of these players enter the professional world straight out of college, lacking business experience and financial acumen. They often fall victim to extravagant spending habits fueled by the culture of excess in sports - flashy cars, extravagant homes, and indulgent jewelry. However, my mission goes beyond curbing extravagant spending; it delves into the complexities of financial mismanagement. Professional players face unique challenges, such as frequent relocations due to trades, high tax rates, agent and lawyer fees, and the need to budget for off-seasons, which can be particularly challenging in a league that pays on a weekly basis. Moreover, they are susceptible to poor investment choices, opportunistic friends and family, and, in some cases, substantial child support payments. It's crucial to understand that bankruptcy for these athletes often means losing the money earned during their relatively short careers, which typically span just three to four seasons. My role as a financial advisor is to provide guidance and financial education, helping these young athletes navigate the complexities of wealth management and ensure they have a secure financial future, even after their playing days are over.

Understanding Your Equity Compensation

Your equity compensation can play an important role as you build your personalized financial roadmap and work toward your objectives. Strategically using your stock options, restricted stock units (RSUs), Employee Stock Purchase Programs (ESPP) and more may make it possible for you to meet certain milestones sooner, or provide more flexibility for your long-term plans. Reach out to learn more about your options and maximize these benefits.

Equity Compensation and Reaching Your Goals
Here are four steps to consider when using your equity compensation to help you achieve your financial goals.

Step 1 – Take Stock, Financially
Get a clear picture of your overall financial situation. In addition to your income, assets and debts, don’t forget to review your equity compensation.

Step 2: Refresh or Build Your Budget
With the information you gathered in Step 1, consider updating or creating a budget that addresses your immediate needs while also keeping an eye toward the future.

Step 3: Document or Revisit Your Goals
Once you understand your immediate circumstances and needs, look toward the financial horizon and write down your goals.

    Step 4: Create a Goal-centered Financial Plan
As you solidify your goals, consider how much available cash, or liquidity, you’ll need to turn them into realities.

    Stock Options
To take advantage of your stock options, you have to purchase the stock at a fixed grant price (aka exercise price or strike price) during a specific period of time.
    Icon Image
    Employee Stock Purchase Plan (ESPP)
An Employee Stock Purchase Plan (ESPP) is a benefit some public companies offer. Through payroll deductions, employees can purchase company stock at a discount to the current market price.
    Icon Image
    Restricted Share Units (RSUs)
Restricted stock units (RSUs) are a promise to deliver shares of company stock to the holder on a specified event or date (known as vesting). Some companies award a set number of RSUs, while others award RSUs based on a set dollar value. You do not need to purchase the shares as they are granted to you once they fully vest.
