About Stephen Smith

Stephen Smith is a founder of the Smith Davis Group at Morgan Stanley Wealth Management. Stephen leads a highly customized approach, working closely with individuals, couples, and families to discern their unique financial goals and challenges so that he can better support them in advancing their distinctive priorities. Collaborative and intuitive, he recognizes that clients’ financial lives have multiple dimensions: emotional, historical, practical, and aspirational. He embeds this understanding within his analysis and outreach, staying apprised of each client’s evolving needs through regular communication, ongoing dialogue, and reliable responsiveness.

Within the team, Stephen is responsible for portfolio design and implementation, tailoring his work to the investment preferences, risk tolerance, cash-flow needs, and timeframes of each client. A firm believer in transparency and openness, he assists clients in weighing their options so that they can become more informed stewards of their wealth. He enjoys applying the knowledge and insights he has gained from direct involvement in the capital markets to help clients pursue their goals more efficiently.

Stephen has worked in the financial service industry as an Investment Advisor since 1999. Previously, he held positions in operations and strategic planning for medical engineering and technology firms. He began his career in psychology, serving as the lead clinician for county-based services in Sonoma.

Stephen earned his undergraduate degree in Psychology from Sonoma State University and his M.B.A. from San Francisco State University. He holds the Certified Investment Management Analyst® (CIMA®) designation awarded by the Investments & Wealth Institute™ in conjunction with UC Berkeley School of Business and the Certified Portfolio Manager (CPM®) designation from the Academy of Certified Portfolio Managers in conjunction with Columbia University.

A resident of Santa Rosa for more than 30 years, Stephen is past president of the board of Family Service Agency Sonoma County and previously served as an advisor to the Investment Committee of Audubon Canyon Ranch. He and his wife Denise have one son, a filmmaker who is a professor at UC San Diego. In his free time, Stephen enjoys traveling, hiking, listening to music, and spending time with family and friends.

About Matthew Davis

Matthew Davis is a founder of the Smith Davis Group at Morgan Stanley Wealth Management. Matthew develops close relationships with the individuals, families, and businesses he serves, guiding them toward a more secure and thoughtful financial future. A passionate proponent of long-term planning, he supports clients in delineating their unique priorities and advancing cohesive initiatives in pursuit of those objectives. Adept in quantitative analysis, he also recognizes that “wealth” encompasses much more than a person’s balance sheet. He engages in ongoing conversations with clients to stay apprised of their evolving needs and is gratified to serve as a trusted sounding board and confidante for financial decisions, large or small.

Within the team, Matthew spearheads the design and development of tailored wealth management plans for each client, returning to this foundation in light of dynamic economic conditions and changing client circumstances. He integrates and unifies multiple aspects of a client’s financial life, including investments, cash flow needs, risk profile, assets and liabilities, and legacy and estate intentions. Attuned to the needs of multiple generations of client families, Matthew strives to help people become more capable and informed stewards of their wealth. He believes strongly in the value of behavioral finance, integrating research from this discipline to help clients pursue more thoughtful and deliberate decisions.

Matthew has been in the financial services industry since 2005. His longevity and continuity enable him to connect clients to wide range of resources and associated best practices. He earned his B.S. in Economics from California State University, San Luis Obispo.

Active in the wider community, Matthew serves on the board of the Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital Foundation and is an honorary board member of SAY, Social Advocates for Youth. He is also a committed volunteer with Schools Plus, a partnership of parents, educators, and community businesses that work together to support enrichment activities for Santa Rosa students.

Matthew and his wife Chrystal reside in Bennett Valley with their young son, Boone and daughter, Marguerite. In his free time, Matthew enjoys traveling, playing golf, running, hiking, and enjoying food and wine with family and friends.
