Meet Smalley Muldowney Group

About Roy Smalley

As the senior partner in the Smalley Muldowney Group Roy is responsible for synthesizing Morgan Stanley and other research sources into customized portfolio strategies for our clients, making sure each client portfolio matches the objectives of the client’s financial plan.  Roy focuses on asset allocation strategies, equity research and fixed income portfolio construction helping to provide clients with diversified, risk-managed portfolios designed to keep them progressing toward their objectives through all market environments.

A financial advisor for the past two decades Roy has been granted Morgan Stanley Wealth Advisor and Portfolio Manager designations.   He and his team have built a large wealth management businesses in the region bringing the benefits of experience and scale to an exclusive customer base.

Following a 13-year Major League Baseball career, Roy keeps his hand in the game doing occasional baseball analysis on television for Fox Sports.  An avid golfer, he has continued his love of hitting balls with sticks trading Louisville Sluggers for TaylorMades.  Roy is an avid reader and a collector of jazz music.  Married for 38 years, Roy and his wife, Christine, have 3 grown children and two granddaughters.  He serves as President of the Board of a non-profit organization, Pitch In For Baseball which supplies new and gently used baseball and softball equipment to underserved children and communities and is a major supporter of Boys and Girls Clubs of the Twin Cities.

About Ryan Muldowney

Ryan’s main responsibilities in The Smalley Muldowney Group revolve around financial planning.  He focused on helping wealthy individuals and families define and manage their financial goals.  Whether Ryan is working with business owners, professionals or other high net worth individuals, all his clients have one thing in common: the desire to pursue their goals and dreams and have a professionally developed road map to help them make smart financial decisions.  Ryan also heads up the analysis of the team’s hedge fund and other alternative investment strategies.

Ryan earned his Bachelor of Science in Economics and Mathematics from the University of Minnesota in 2003.  He has 13 years of industry experience and became a Certified Financial Planner™™ in 2005.

Prior to joining Morgan Stanley in 2007, Ryan worked at Citigroup as a financial planning analyst.  He was responsible for creating written financial plans for clients with net-worths greater than $10 million.

Ryan and his family live in Edina, MN. He is an avid fly fisherman and loves spending time with his young children.

About Laurie Klaphake

Laurie is a Portfolio Associate for the Smalley-Muldowney Group at Morgan Stanley and handles all aspects of delivering concierge level care to her clients.  Laurie helps support the financial roadmap defined by the team through a customized service plan for each client.  

Laurie joined the Minneapolis Smith Barney office in 2005 in the Operations area.  She quickly transitioned to being a Client Service Associate for a large team.  In 2012, she transitioned to Morgan Stanley working with the management team, assisting with overseeing all of the offices in Minnesota.  Laurie was eager to put her concierge level care skills back to work on the client side of the business and joined the Smalley-Muldowney group in 2014.  Laurie has a BA in Applied Economics from the University of Minnesota.

Laurie lives in Andover with her family.  Laurie enjoys running, singing any chance she can get, and spending time with her little ones.
