FAQs

In this section of my website, I've provided some of the most commonly asked questions by both my clients and potential clients alike. Whether it's discussing our investment philosophies or how frequently we will meet together, it's my goal to provide transparency to ensure we are always on the same page. If you have any additional questions on what it's like to work together, please reach out to myself or my team.
Q: What investment benchmark do you use?
A: We use multiple benchmarks as they are directly related to the investments we chose. For example, if a client only has a US Large Cap fund or SMA (separately managed account where you own individual stocks) then the corresponding benchmark would be the S&P 500. However, when you have a portfolio that is diversified across asset classes (let’s say you own US , International or emerging markets stocks, and bonds, and commodities and /or precious metals, etc.) we use a blended benchmark that closely resembles the %’s of allocation to different assets so we can compare our performance apples to apples. For example, you would not want to compare your international stocks performance to the S&P 500 but rather to MSCI EAFE or similar. The only way to have a fair assessment of any investment portfolio is to track it against a comparable benchmark.
Q: How do you get compensated?
A: I typically work with my clients on a fee for assets under management basis, which varies based on the total amount of managed assets on a declining scale as assets cross certain thresholds. This fee covers all the advisory services I provide, inclusive of financial planning and asset management. A small portion of clients decide to engage me only for financial planning services in which case they pay a fee for the completed plan. The planning fee varies commensurate with the complexity of the clients’ planning needs. From time to time, if I place life insurance or work with specific non-advisory products, I receive compensation as commission from the product placement, i.e. a portion of life insurance premium paid.
Q: Who has access to the account?
A: Ongoing: me, my support staff, my compliance officers and our back office for transaction and reporting purposes. No other financial advisor has access to my accounts except for a contingency plan I have in place in the event something happens to me and I can no longer work. Then all my clients would go to an advisor in my office who is supported by the same service professionals as me. This offers continuity of business if I am no longer alive or I become disabled.
Q: What is your investment philosophy?
A: Grow my clients’ assets while taking less risk than the portfolio benchmarks and managing volatility. I believe in diversification of assets, of income sources and tax management, so you keep more of what you make. Portfolios are not cookie cutter or one size fits all. A portfolio is built to answer your goals such as growth and / or income need and are suited for your investor risk profile.
Q: How often will we meet?
A: Typically, we meet more often (via call, Zoom or in person) at the beginning of our relationship, while we establish mutual trust and a comfort level with working together. This is also driven by the fact that the onboarding process involves account opening, portfolio proposals, asset transfers and investment inceptions, review of all other aspects of one’s financial life with a goal to streamline and simplify your financial dealings.

Ongoing, I meet with my clients every 6 months for planning and portfolio reviews (longer, more formal meetings) with touch points in between as needed. Additionally, my service staff reaches out every 6 months proactively, so that you have a meeting with us every 3 months. My service team will reach out to offer digital tools training and enrollments, speak to you about available banking products and ensure we are meeting your wealth management needs.

We are here to provide not only palpable financial services but more importantly financial counseling so that you can feel confident you have an investment strategy to withstand market downturns and take advantage of opportunities.
Q: What sets you apart from other Financial Advisors?
A: When working together, I aim to provide you with a holistic, all-encompassing experience.

We go beyond traditional investment management and basic financial planning by providing extensive estate planning services that help protect your wealth and secure your legacy for future generations. We also work with you to understand the complexities of your tax landscape, and will partner with your tax advisors to develop tailored strategies suitable for your portfolio.

Furthermore, we collaborate with estate planning attorneys to ensure all aspects of your financial legacy are properly addressed. During this process, our goal is to mitigate potential risks and safeguard your financial future. As part of your risk management assessment, we will review, make recommendations, and can also help implement insurance strategies as part of your comprehensive financial plan.

9Investors should consider many factors before deciding which 529 plan is appropriate. Some of these factors include: the Plan’s investment options and the historical investment performance of these options, the Plan’s flexibility and features, the reputation and expertise of the Plan’s investment manager, Plan contribution limits and the federal and state tax benefits associated with an investment in the Plan. Some states, for example, offer favorable tax treatment and other benefits to their residents only if they invest in the state’s own Qualified Tuition Program. Investors should determine their home state’s tax treatment of 529 plans when considering whether to choose an in-state or out-of-state plan. Investors should consult with their tax or legal advisor before investing in any 529 Plan or contact their state tax division for more information. Morgan Stanley Smith Barney LLC does not provide tax and/or legal advice. Investors should review a Program Disclosure Statement, which contains more information on investment options, risk factors, fees and expenses and possible tax consequences.
