Helping My Clients Master the Art of Life

When people ask me “What do you do at Morgan Stanley?” I respond, “Help my clients master the art of life.” Put differently, my focus is on their personal fulfillment… that is, the deeply felt sense that their life is full, whole, and complete, and the knowledge that if you died tomorrow, your life would have made a real difference. I counsel my clients on the definition of tough love—the key isn’t what they want to give their children, but that they want them to learn—and we help put into place the kind of real-time budget and estate plan that encourages their children to become productive and fulfilled adults. To help put my enthusiasm for Wealth Management in context—and to help explain my passion for providing my clients not just with comprehensive financial advice, but with a big picture sense of what is truly important in their life and how to achieve it. My own family background shaped my philosophy. My parents met during World War II in a Japanese relocation camp in Jerome, Arkansas. After two years, they were able to leave the camp, and work and continue their courtship in Chicago. After World War II ended they were able to return to California, where they were married in the Hollywood Presbyterian Church. After my grandfather died, my dad returned to Hanford, California, south of Fresno, where I was born. Fortunately, someone from the Hanford Presbyterian Church took title to my family’s property when they were relocated, and then transferred title back to them after the war. Growing up, I heard about this many times from the older generation—just like I regularly heard about what it took to get through the Great Depression—and in this way I came back to understand the importance of being ethical and doing good things for others. Unfortunately, because of my father and uncle’s lack of estate planning, I watched my dad struggle with straightening out my uncle’s various business and legal obligations.

Vision, Commitment, and Goals are what we call, “above the line” activities. They’re the big-picture elements of your life. It is important that you define them first, then use them to help you determine the most appropriate strategies, tactics and tools. The following chart shows you how these elements fit together.

As you can see, the lower you go on the chart, the narrower the focus. Vision, commitment and goals require a wide-angle lens - big-picture thinking, the dream in your mind. Strategies, tactics and tools are the pragmatic thinking and implements we use to bring the dream into reality. See the line between the two groups. It symbolically separates them. Above-the-line elements give meaning to those below the line.

Too often, financial advisors, estate attorneys, tax consultants, insurance and real estate agents operate “below the line” – implementing strategies, tactics and tools they understand, but without clear vision, commitment and goals to guide them.

Master the Art of Life or “big picture” approach to living a perfect
life requires you to see and understand two pictures: personal and financial.

It is essential that you define your vision, commitment and goals. And, then, use them to guide your day-to-day activities.

You require and deserve a team of highly competent professionals, all of whom represent outstanding experience and knowledge in their respective fields.

The best advisors work together as a dedicated, interdependent team, focused on one common goal - you!

Now that you’ve taken the first step into your future by reading this article, we invite you to take the second step. Consider how those five basics can guide your life’s activities. And, then, when you want to take the next step, I look forward to helping you.
