Comprehensive Financial Planning

The foundation and first step of our wealth management process is developing a unique financial plan to help determine your goals and the best pathway towards achieving them. Our thorough client questionnaire seeks to capture all relevant qualitative and quantitative data to produce a meaningful plan including expenses, income streams, employee benefits, investment/bank accounts, real estate, liabilities, insurance and estate planning considerations.

In many cases, our original thought-provoking discussions help illuminate what is top of mind for clients. For those approaching or in retirement, we focus on what number clients will want to withdraw from their investment portfolio to maintain their lifestyle comfortably. If retirement seems too far into the future, ambitions such as buying a new home or planning for future education are common in how to figuring out a best practice for budgeting and saving.

Upon presentation of the results, we utilize Monte Carlo analysis to run different simulations of your portfolio based on projected risk and return. These simulations are our guide to ensuring you are on the right path forward towards achieving your goals and not taking on any unnecessary risk. As new variables inevitably emerge in your life, we can run "what-if" scenarios that show how major financial decisions impact the success of your plan. Our software also provides guidance on maximizing Social Security benefits and understanding how a recession or bear market may impact your ability to meet goals.

Tax-Efficient Savings & Distribution Strategies

The often overlooked second step of our wealth management process is utilizing all styles of accounts at your disposal to maximize tax efficiency. Also traditionally known as bucketing or portfolio grouping, asset location evaluates the time horizon both on the funds and account type to keep potential tax expenses top of mind.

Retirees in particular face challenges when generating income or selling down assets to maintain their lifestyle. Utilizing our intelligent withdrawal software that factors in required minimum distributions (RMDs) and tax lots, we can recommend the most appropriate account to take unexpected expenses. Capital protection and generating income is crucial to an effective retirement strategy and knowing where and when to make distributions can add tremendous value to your plan.

Blessed with the gift of time, young professionals are also seeking ways to preserve and grow capital. In this case, vehicles that offer tax benefits such as 529 education savings plans, Roth IRAs and Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) are all potential options depending on client circumstances. By taking small savings actions early, the power of compounding can produce dramatic differences in long-term wealth accumulation.

About Brian Kerns

Brian Kerns is a Private Banker serving Morgan Stanley Wealth Management offices in Florida.

Private Bankers partner with Financial Advisors to develop a specialized approach for managing clients’ cash flow, liquidity and financing needs, leveraging our comprehensive suite of cash management and lending solutions.

Brian began his career in financial services in 2004, and joined Morgan Stanley in 2018. Prior to joining the firm, he was a Senior Premier Banker at SunTrust. He also served as a Wealth Management Banker at the Merrill Lynch.

Brian is a graduate of the University of North Florida, where he received a Bachelor of Business Administration in Business Management. Brian resides in Lake Mary, Florida with his wife and children. Outside of the office, he enjoys playing golf and coaching his son T-ball team.
