My Story and Services

Laura Russell-Jones is a partner on the Conscious Wealth Management Group, a Financial Advisory practice within Morgan Stanley. She focuses on a limited amount of clients to develop sophisticated strategies for portfolio management, risk mitigation, estate and investment planning strategies. Her advisory-based private wealth management practice has a disciplined and strategic investment approach, with a focus on long-term relationships. What sets her apart is a highly-personalized approach, combined with deep market intelligence and independent thinking when it comes to making the right investment decisions.

The Clients We Serve:

  • Affluent Individuals and Multi-Generational Families
  • Women Investors
  • Business Owners
  • Senior Executives
  • Divorcees and Widows/Widowers
  • Retirees
  • Foundations and Non-profits

I've had the opportunity to work with some truly exceptional people. My clients have started and grown thriving businesses and achieved success at the highest levels possible in various industries. They have raised families, contributed to their communities and led active lives. Often, these pursuits and commitments leave little time to address the complex challenges of managing the wealth they have created along the way. That's where we step in.

Serving as our clients' go-to advisors, we help them create and implement comprehensive wealth management plans based on their specific needs and goals. We are at our best when the issues they are facing are the most complex. Providing access to whatever expertise and resources they require, we work to help our clients protect and grow their assets, create the legacy they want to leave and support the people, causes and institutions that enhance their lives.

About Me:

Laura is a partner on the Conscious Wealth Management Group. Originally founded in 1983, the team has grown into a multi-generational wealth management team that serves high-net worth individuals and their families, corporate founders and early employees, as well as non-profit foundations and endowments. With over $575m assets under management (as of July 2021), the team consists of 5 Financial Advisors and has offices in San Francisco, Portland, and Hawaii, and was recognized as one of the best wealth management practices in the state by Forbes.*

As a woman, mother, and former business owner, I am a strong advocate for women investors, women in leadership and business owners. As a Board Member of the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO-California) and former President of the San Francisco Bay Area Chapter, I have been actively involved in helping women to grow their businesses, be successful women leaders, be financially independent and confident in their financial future. I'm involved in my community, sponsoring local charities and non-profits and have been a speaker and host of several seminars and educational workshops. Given that I have a college daughter, I'm also committed to helping the next generation of investors with financial literacy.

As an Investing With Impact Director, I provide expert advice on socially responsible investing and how to incorporate positive social and environmental impact on their investments while also generating market returns. I am one of only 70 Financial Advisors at Morgan Stanley with this specialized designation. As a Certified Exit Planning Advisor (CEPA), I work with business owners contemplating the transition of their business and provide strategic advice on optimal exit planning and succession strategies, how to enhance the value of their business, and how to put together a long-term retirement financial plan.

OUR PROCESS: COMPREHENSIVE HOLISTIC WEALTH MANAGEMENT THAT IS DISCIPLINED & FOCUSED ON YOU

Our work with you starts with one or more in-depth, exploratory meetings. Unlike a robo-advisor or a "one-size-fits-all" approach, our team takes a Holistic-value added approach to financial planning. We need to understand your unique financial situation and the big picture so we can offer you the best possible tailored advice and customized solutions. It is designed to guide you through the never-ending changes life brings, but ensures you stay on track to accomplish your goals.

    Icon Image
STEP 1: Getting To Know You

Listening to you and understanding your situation is the first step in building trust and establishing the important connection between financial advisor and the client. We believe getting to know you personally is as important as learning about your financial picture. The Discovery Process includes establishing your personal goals & objectives.

    • What is most important to you?
    • What are your goals – personally, professionally and for your family?
    • What areas are of potential concern to you?
    Icon Image
STEP 2: Analyze Current Financial Situation and Conduct Portfolio Review

Next, we gather important data, documents and financial statements pertaining to bank accounts, business assets, personal property, qualified retirement accounts, deferred annuity accounts, investments, real estate, residence, Social Security benefit statements, insurance policies, pension estimates, and liabilities.

    • We analyze your current financial situation and identify optimal, more-efficient strategies to better help reach your goals.
    • We take a deep dive into your current investments. By looking under the hood, this comprehensive, analytical portfolio review will determine your Risk Tolerance Level, Portfolio Risk Analysis, Asset Allocation, Diversification & Performance and answer the questions: Are you taking on too much risk? Are you appropriately allocated? Is your Portfolio properly diversified? How are those investments performing relative to their benchmarks? Are your investments aligned with your core beliefs? What improvements to your investment strategy can we make?
    Icon Image
STEP 3: Develop Customized Wealth Management Plan & Road Map

Based on your defined goals (i.e.: retirement at a certain age, a home purchase/remodel, college tuition funding, a philanthropic gifting strategy, legacy planning, etc) and any potential concerns (medical/health, elder care, earlier retirement), we next develop a comprehensive financial plan, which will serve as a road map to help you achieve your goals.

    • We incorporate any unique considerations: concentrated stock positions, business sale consultation, liquidity needs, income needs planning, etc.
    • We also identify tax-efficient solutions that are tailored to your goals, which may Education Savings (529), Retirement (401K, IRA, Roth), Estate Planning (Gifting, Trusts, Beneficiary Review), Long Term Care and other Insurance options.
    • We evaluate various asset protection strategies to help preserve your wealth.
    • Because life is dynamic, our dynamic plans can also look at various "what-if" scenarios that help you in your planning and decision-making.
    Icon Image
STEP 4: Implement Portfolio Investment Strategy

Our integrated planning based approach ensures that your asset allocation reflects your objectives, risk tolerance, liquidity needs and time horizon. We determine your investment strategy and appropriate asset allocation by taking into account outside assets, legacy positions and illiquid investments. We strive to minimize volatility through diversification while making tactical shifts to protect portfolios or capitalize on opportunistic market conditions.

    • Since many clients are sensitive to taxes and capital gains, tax efficiency and after-tax returns are a key focus throughout our process and investment strategies.
    • For clients who want more socially responsible or sustainable investing options that align with their values, we can integrate within the portfolio strategy.
    Icon Image
STEP 5: Ongoing Monitoring & Review

Just because a plan is in place, doesn't mean our work together is done. Life is dynamic. Markets change. Regular quarterly review meetings provide an opportunity to discuss changes in life events, market conditions and other situational changes that may impact your life goals. We also evaluate the portfolio and make necessary tactical adjustments to your strategy and financial plan to ensure you stay on course to achieve your long-term goals. We are always available to you and your trusted advisors.

Women & Wealth

I specialize in serving women. Why? Simple. You deserve better. One of the biggest hurdles in finding sound financial advice is that the majority of advisors in the business don’t look or think like you. Women financial advisers only make up 15 to 20 percent of all advisors, according to a report from Barron's magazine. Women have often complained that many traditional advisors have condescended, talked over or flat out ignored them. What’s more, the culture of the financial services industry hasn’t typically been a welcoming environment where client education is prioritized, making it harder for people to find – and trust – the kind of advice they need. As a result, women all too often believe that finances are too complicated, too boring, or just too much for them. This has to change.
WHAT WE PROVIDE
• Solutions for Independent Women
• Financial Empowerment - Gain control, clarity and confidence in your financial decisions.
• A financial advocate who can help educate and empower you to make sound choices.
About Me
WHO WE SERVE
We specialize in serving all types of women, including divorcees, widows, women with inherited wealth, business owners, women in transition and breadwinners.
WHY OUR TEAM IS UNIQUELY QUALIFIED TO OFFER FINANCIAL PLANNING TO WOMEN
• We are a women-led team of experienced professionals who have extensive experience as financial planners and investment advisors.
• We invest the time to listen and understand the unique challenges that women face.
• As a former business owner, I understand the complex challenges of running a business and preparing for their own financial future.
• We problem-solve and help our clients find the tailored solutions specific to their individual needs.
• We take the time to educate and empower women with knowledge and financial literacy in a down-to-earth accessible way so that that feel more confident and in control of their family’s well-being and financial future.
• We are passionate about socially responsible investing and are uniquely knowledgeable about providing robust investing options that may more aligned with investor’s core values.
• We are deeply committed to empowering women and involved in our community and various organizations that support women business owners and women leadership.
WHAT WOMEN WANT:
As women continue to earn money, become the main breadwinners of their families, and run their own businesses, it’s vital to have a clear understanding of your overall financial position, financial goals and a roadmap to achieve it. But often a woman may be too busy handling their day-to-day responsibilities to take the time to implement an appropriate plan and take the necessary steps to protect their assets and wealth, both personal and business, which may be vulnerable to taxes, lawsuits, accidents and other financial risks that are part of everyday life. We can help provide expert advice and guidance.

When it comes to wealth management, women want engagement as a collaborative partner, rather than being told what to do with their money, so they can feel more in control of their wealth. Many prefer to be served by other women who can relate to them, listen to their concerns, and are passionate about helping create, grow and protect their wealth. We listen and work with you.

We understand that while women have common needs, each one is unique, and a one-size-fits-all approach will not work. No matter what stage of life a woman is in, we are very aware that what one woman wants can be very different from what another wants, and we approach each relationship with that understanding. We provide customized solutions to complex situations.
FINANCIAL ISSUES & LIFE EVENTS
We advise affluent women who are seeking financial guidance and advice – or they may be experiencing one of life’s many transitions. Our clients are individuals who admit they need help and want to work with someone they can trust; who are savvy about money but who “know what they don’t know”; and who could do it themselves, but don’t have the time or the interest.

I am motivated by a personal passion and satisfaction and hence, specialize in helping women to work through their unique financial issues and life events including:

• Getting over the fear of not having enough.
• Developing a sustainable saving and investing process.
• Understanding the balance between risk and reward in investing.
• Saving for competing goals.
• Getting spending under control.
• Weighing benefits of a career or job change.
• Business Planning
• Deciding when to retire or start a “new chapter”
• Marriage or remarriage
• Becoming financially independent after divorce or death of a spouse.
• Expecting or Adopting A Child
• College Planning
• Special Needs Planning
• Managing sudden wealth or inheritance
• Buying or selling a home or refinancing a mortgage.
• Health Concerns
• Taking on the care and financial support of elderly parents or family member
• Evaluating the need for long-term care insurance.
• Planning for unexpected life events: divorce, disability, illness.
• Charitable Planning & Philanthropy
WOMEN HAVE UNIQUE CHALLENGES
Did you know that 8 out of 10 women will at some point in their lives be responsible for managing finances for themselves and/or their families? Over the next decade, women will control two-thirds of the wealth in the U.S. Additional considerations:
• Women live longer than men (the average age of widowhood is 56) which means that there are more years of retirement that require funding.
• Unfortunately, due to income inequality, women usually have less money to invest when funding their retirement.
• Time spent outside of the workplace to raise families and/or provide caregiving for elder loved ones also leads to further loss of income over the course of a career.

By understanding these challenges, women must understand and be knowledgeable so that they can take the necessary steps to prepare themselves for retirement and long-term financial security. We recognize that many women are confident investors and are by no means less competent in managing their finances. What we see more often than not, however, is a hesitation to demonstrate this knowledge, or if there is a lack of understanding, it’s coupled with self-judgment and a fear of speaking up. Unfortunately, women often do not know where to turn for trusted advice, nor do they know the right questions to ask. In a male dominated industry, we are a women-led team that is ready to educate and empower women to take control of their future.
FINANCIAL EDUCATION
Not only do women have unique considerations and challenges when it comes to financial planning, but they are thirsty for knowledge and want expert and compassionate guidance. I get it. In fact, I’ve been on your page for a while.

• Women’s Educational Seminar Series: - That’s why several years ago I created the Women’s Educational Seminar Series, which are special, intimate events aimed to empower women with the financial confidence and resources you need to take control of your money and wealth. My goal is to support a future full of strong, independent women based on education, positivity, and empowerment.
• Financial Literacy Workshops for Teen Girls & College Students - I’ve also conducted Financial Literacy Workshops for Teen Girls at the National Charity League and other organizations as well as college students at UC Berkeley. Stay tuned for upcoming events.

PLANNING YOUR EXIT STRATEGY – Pre-Sale

Whether selling a business or transferring ownership to family members, various strategies can help you achieve your objectives. Monetizing a privately-held company requires seamless coordination of your personal wealth management and business exit strategies. Planning ahead as much as 2-5 years is critical to properly position your business for a sale. As your Financial Advisor, we can assist you at each stage of the exit process, highlighting key decisions, deadlines and milestones.

How we can provide tremendous value before the transaction:

    • Assemble an Advisory team – identify and retain a highly qualified, multidisciplinary team of professionals (legal, tax, estate planning, MA, growth strategists) to help prepare your business for sale, guide you through the exit process and provide strategic advice.
    • Evaluate Readiness – Create a goals-based financial plan that integrates your personal and business goals and determines the income you will need to support your lifestyle. Also provide various cash flows scenarios.
    • Pre-Monetization Preparation & Transaction Execution - Analyze each exit opportunity to determine which is financially most optimal for you and develop a plan for managing post-transaction liquidity. (Will help in deal negotiation.)

PLANNING YOUR EXIT STRATEGY – Post-Sale

After the transaction is completed, now you need professional financial guidance on how to manage the proceeds of the sale. With a likely hefty capital gain, taxes will be top of mind. We can help by constructing financial strategies intended to help business owners create personal wealth by reducing or deferring taxes, moderating risks, and helping to be more intentional with their new wealth.

How we can provide tremendous value after the transaction:

    • Coordination with Advisory Team – Work with your key advisors to determine your tax liability and construct a sophisticated tax-efficient investment strategy to help offset capital gains.
    • Financial Plan - Build a financial plan supporting your lifestyle and financial goals with various scenarios and cash flows.
    • Tailored Investment Strategy - Construct a sophisticated portfolio that meets complex needs of offsetting capital gains, generating income to replace business income, transferring wealth and legacy planning, managing risk and maximizing philanthropic impact.
    • Access to world-class Alternative Investment Strategies (private equity, real assets, private credit, hedge funds and digital assets) that offer potential to reduce volatility, provide tax efficiency, generate income, and enhance returns.
    • Values-Alignment - Construct a portfolio that is aligned to your values and has a positive social and/or environmental impact – this could include gender diversity, racial equality, climate change, renewable energy, circular economy, etc.

    BUSINESS ACCOUNTS - CASH MANAGEMENT

The lifeblood of any business is cash, whether accessing capital or managing receivables and payables. We can help integrate solutions for managing investments and day-to-day cash management needs of the business.

    RETIREMENT BENEFIT PLANS

Offering a retirement savings plan (such as a 401K, Defined Benefit Pension Plan, Profit Sharing, Simplified Employee Pension Plans (SEP)) for you and your employees has many benefits. It can help the business owner plan for retirement, offer tax benefits, and help recruit and retain key employees. As a Qualified Plan Financial Consultant (QPFC), I help business owners customize a retirement plan that fits the needs of their business and employees. We also review your current plan, especially if the plan originally set up may no longer best serve your needs as your business grows, cash flow tightens, employees come and go, markets change, laws and taxes change.
