Kerner Smith, CPWA®

My Mission Statement
A FOUNDER FOR FOUNDERS
In the startup world, time is scarce and execution is critical --traditional thinking, process and advice can be costly.
As a former Founder, Kerner understands the importance of an entrepreneurial mindset, maniacal optimization and an obsessive client-first mentality. And as a Certified Private Wealth Advisor® professional and Partner of the Forbes-ranked Altera Wealth Management Group --a boutique practice within Morgan Stanley's prestigious Private Wealth Management division --Kerner's clients benefit from nearly 200 years of experience and the intellectual capital required for creative solutions to complex problems.
Prior to his startup days Kerner spent ten years at KeyBanc advising many of the Firm's largest institutional clients on their investments, culminating in a promotion to Managing Director at age 33. After an accomplished Wall Street career, Kerner co-founded DISCERN (B2B SaaS/FinTech) in 2010 where he served as Chief Revenue Officer and helped close a Series A funding. With nearly two decades of financial and startup experience, Kerner joined Morgan Stanley in 2017 to bring his distinctive background and skill set to Founders, Private Companies and Professional Investors.
Kerner graduated from Cornell University with a B.S. in Applied Economics, Management and Marketing and completed the CPWA® certification program through the Yale School of Management. As a competitive swimmer, Kerner was an NCAA Division I EISL finalist at Cornell and 5-time High School All-American at Phillips Exeter Academy.
On a personal level, Kerner's passions include fitness training, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, skiing, hiking, golf and hosting Founder-focused events. After twenty years in New York City, Kerner moved to Los Angeles in 2020 to formally establish Altera's California presence, where many of the Team's clients reside.
