Changing jobs can be a time of anxiety or promise. What you decide to do with your hard earned 401(k) account can potentially determine the outcome of such life events. You can also may have more investing options. It can also mean that the fees that you are currently paying for your 401(k) may be lowered. Since there are very few opportunities to take advantage of these tax deferred growth savings accounts, an experienced financial advisor giving informed investment strategies from a world class organization is just what you may need. They say that every battle is won before it’s ever fought. Take charge of your retirement today and speak to an experienced Senior Vice President Financial Advisor at Morgan Stanley.
Typically, a retirement plan participant leaving an employer has the following four options (and may engage in a combination of these options depending on their employment status, age and the availability of the particular option):
1. Cash out the account value and take a lump sum distribution from the current plan subject to mandatory 20% withholding, as well as potential taxes and 10% penalty OR to continue tax deferred growth and:
2. Leave the assets in the former employer’s plan (if permitted)
3. Rollover the retirement savings into the new employer’s qualified plan, if one is available and rollovers are permitted
4. Rollover the retirement savings into an IRA
Other factors in making a rollover decision- include (among other things) the differences in: (1) Investment Options, (2) Fees and Expenses, (3) Services, (4) Penalty-Free Withdrawals, (5) Creditor Protection in Bankruptcy and from Legal Judgments, (6) Required Minimum Distributions or “RMDs”, and (7) the Tax Treatment of Employer Stock.

When evaluating financial well-being, one must begin by asking some basic questions that go to the heart of many essential life issues. Not understanding what is important in your life is like being on a long life journey without a destination.
Here are a list of questions that can help determine what’s most important in your life right now:
Do you know how much you save or spend each year?
What is my current net worth?
What are the ten most important things I want to accomplish while you’re on this Earth?
Am I borrowing money the most efficiently?
Do I have the proper choices in my retirement or 401(k) plan and is it enough to allow me to retire when I intend to?
Do I have the proper amount in an emergency fund?
If something were to happen to me, will my family be able to put everything together?
Does long term care make sense for me?
Is my estate plan up to date and do I have a will, a durable power of attorney, a healthcare proxy, or a trust?
Is there anything else I can do to reduce my income taxes that I’m not doing now?
What is my current asset allocation with all the things I own?
Have I named the proper beneficiaries of my insurance and retirement accounts?
What has been my rate of return over the years and is it competitive to the respective benchmarks?
If I only had 5 years to live, what would I change in my life?
If money were no object, what would I be doing right now?
If I found out I was going to die tomorrow, what do I regret not doing?

2Investors should consider many factors before deciding which 529 plan is appropriate. Some of these factors include: the Plan’s investment options and the historical investment performance of these options, the Plan’s flexibility and features, the reputation and expertise of the Plan’s investment manager, Plan contribution limits and the federal and state tax benefits associated with an investment in the Plan. Some states, for example, offer favorable tax treatment and other benefits to their residents only if they invest in the state’s own Qualified Tuition Program. Investors should determine their home state’s tax treatment of 529 plans when considering whether to choose an in-state or out-of-state plan. Investors should consult with their tax or legal advisor before investing in any 529 Plan or contact their state tax division for more information. Morgan Stanley Smith Barney LLC does not provide tax and/or legal advice. Investors should review a Program Disclosure Statement, which contains more information on investment options, risk factors, fees and expenses and possible tax consequences.
3Alternative Investments are speculative and include a high degree of risk. An investor could lose all or a substantial amount of his/her investment. Alternative investments are appropriate only for qualified, long-term investors who are willing to forgo liquidity and put capital at risk for an indefinite period of time.
